"Dying Out Loud" by Dave Warnock
The "Dying Out Loud" Tour. Minnesota Atheists November 2022 Public Meeting with presenter Dave Warnock, recorded Sunday, November 20, 2022.
Dave Warnock is bringing his "Dying Out Loud" tour to the Twin Cities! Join us in person to hear him speak, and even get a signed copy of his memoir, "Childish Things."
Dave Warnock was caught up in the Jesus movement of the 70s and lived the bulk of his life as a Charismatic Evangelical, serving as a pastor on three different church staffs.
Following several years of internal struggle, Dave came to the conclusion in 2011 that he no longer believed in a personal God. In 2019 he was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease), a progressive neurodegenerative disease with an average 3-5 year life expectancy.
Dave is spending the days he has left speaking out about the dangers and harm of fundamental religions, with a focus on Evangelical Christianity. He also seeks to provide a safe haven to those questioning their faith, recovering from religious trauma or navigating life's tribulations as he shares his own perspective as a former ex-evangelical, but now an atheist, facing a terminal diagnosis.

    1.) Not a religionist here, but I thought the Armana tablets described the invading Habiru (Hebrews). 2.) The Euphrates River actually begins in the Highlands of Anatolia. Could the writer of the passage about Solomon's kingdom be more accurate if the writer had north in mind rather than east (toward Iraq)?

    36:00 theyre facts but theyre not relevant? I think the big problem with the pro choice debate is that neither side actually cares about the children in any way. It's pretty much entirely about female autonomy at the expense of everyone else, which is very telling. It's life, it's human; re-framing that is pointless, and continuing to try is dehumanizing to yourself and everyone else involved. There's no soul, the bible is no good for sorting this out. No one is actually focusing on the real issue, they just want to push their own personal philosophies at all costs.

    I am a convert to Catholicism from an agnostic background. I appreciated this discussion for its calm rationality and avoidance of derogatory remarks. I wish more Christians were like that. I can't say I don't struggle with some Catholic doctrines. But we need to acknowledge that there is a dimension of being beyond both reason and emotion, and even scientific "proofs" are taken on faith. Thank you for pointing out that Christians need to get rid of having a superior attitude. I am working on that !

    I wish someone would ask more hard hitting questions, especially given it was a friendly audience. For example, if we grant his theses that the scribes and priests represented a minority of the population, and most of their contemporaries were polytheists, and they only wrote for themselves because most people lacked the training, why did they weave together conflicting ideas? We take it for granted that Dr. Avalos is reading the text fairly, but it makes them out to be foolish geniuses. Like they are staunch monotheists but don't even recognize they (allegedly) worship multiple gods and their wife/wives. I find him much easier to follow when he is discussing material remains than when he tries to read the text.

    The Mother archetype, which symbolizes the unconscious psyche, gives birth to the Self, which is symbolized by Jesus, Apollonius, Buddha, Horus, Krishna, and many others. If one does not understand depth psychology and the archetypes of the unconscious, it is impossible to understand the origins of these myths and writings, which after all, originated from the archetypes in the collective unconscious. The Hero has a thousand faces.

  • @Magik1369
    @Magik1369 Před 4 měsíci

    The Romans wrote the gospels, which contain no original or new teachings that weren't already out there for hundreds of years. The gospels are a syncretism of Roman paganism, Greek philosophy, and Jewish thought. These were Bronze Age people that wrote the gospels. These people were entirely ignorant of science and particularly of psychology. The Flavian Caesars were directly involved in creating Christianity to control the masses, especially the Jews, whose country and Temple the Romans sacked and annihilated. This is why the gospels are pro Roman and anti Jewish. Jesus tells people to "[pay their taxes to Caesar" and in another place people are instructed to "submit to the authorities". The gospels are clearly anti Semitic. The teaching of "original sin" is perhaps the most damaging and cruel teaching of all time. Augustine of Hippo created the doctrine of original sin, which says that humans are worthless sinners from birth and need a savior to avoid the fires of hell. The whole premise is false, evil, and damaging to the human psyche. The Christians cling to the Bible even though the Bible is clearly toxic and not the words of a loving G-d.

    Morals come from God. He is the full standard to morals. We get our conscience from God, it determines right from wrong. This is how someone who has never heard the gospel will come to know the truth. They will be judged based on nature, based on the essence and persona of God and conscience. Meat is good for us, in smaller doses. Protein keeps the bones and muscles strong.

      You're here because your parents made you. You came from your parents. You go where you please, presumably. *Human beings (conscious observers) assign purpose and value to all things* Without a mind capable of making value judgements, an entity cannot logically decide that X is better than or "means more" than Y. *A male bear eating one of his cubs because they are easily accessible and he's hungry, does not for a moment think to himself "this is wrong, my child means more to me than my hunger"* Therefore, "why are we here" or "what is our purpose" or "what is the meaning of life" are all easy questions to answer. Its up to you.

    And further to my previous comment, I think it boils down to the fact that we are 'mere' humans, without any hope of fixing our inability to wholly avoid conflict within or outside of ourselves, or the tendency to think we know best. We are not 'God', but Jesus came and gave us a clue to what the creator intended. Even if you don't believe in the existence of any 'god', it is always dangerous to think too highly of one's own opinions.

  • @angelamills980
    @angelamills980 Před rokem

    I am not an academic by any stretch of the imagination, but my passion is to discover why we ended up on this amazing planet, yet cannot seem to appreciate the gift of life, natural resources and human abilities available to us. It seems to me that either we humble ourselves and acknowledge that something or someone far greater than human beings put us here and demonstrated how we might work and collaborate in order to reach our potential, OR ELSE we decide that 'man' knows best and refuse to listen to the makers instructions. Despite there being millions of ordinary souls who do basically live appreciatively and unselfishly, all through history the drive for power and success without consideration of others has blighted this world with conflict and injustice. Our only hope is in Jesus Christ who spoke the wisdom of his Father. Even if he was not God, I would rather follow Him than any human 'teacher', philosopher or intellectual. Mere intellect has not solved the 'problem' so far!!

    Genesis 1 claims that plants that require the Sun's warmth, and photosynthetic causing full spectrum sunlight, were somehow created on day 3 before the Sun was created on day 4 Somehow, each of the first 4 days had " evenings and mornings " which require sunrises and sunsets, yet the Sun wasn't created until day 4. This is what happens when other people tell you what the bible author's writings say, versus reading the bible by yourself.

    To faithfully believe that OBJECTIVE morality, meaning, purpose, justice, value and/or goodness can even remotely exist without God (the personification of value and goodness etc), is a fanciful superstition. It’s akin to thinking we can create a new primary colour or Re-write the laws of mathematics or logic. Hence any faithful atheist who foolishly (e.g pridefully) thinks that he/she can create objectively true meaning is vainly deluding THEMSELVES. May God grant them the wisdom to submit to His ways.
