  • "Changing Minds, One Project at a Time". Minnesota Atheists May 2022 Public Meeting with presenter Phil Session, recorded Sunday, May 22, 2022.
Changing hearts and minds about what atheists are can take many forms: podcasts, Socratic conversations, conventions, and more. Hitting closer to home is how we interact in our own communities, how we care for one another, and, ultimately, how we put our hands to work. For this talk, we'll explore Austin Atheists Helping the Homeless, the impact it has made on the local Austin community, and ideas for getting involved in your neck of the woods.
Phil Session was born and raised in Texas in a two-church home, one Baptist and the other a Free Church of God in Christ. He remained a believer up until the middle of college, as the exposure to other cultures, religious practices and researching his own indoctrinated beliefs eventually led him out. After getting involved with the secular community in 2013, his efforts centered around volunteerism and community service projects. That passion led him to organize and attend hundreds of volunteer activities in groups centered around non-belief in Austin and San Antonio. Phil is the volunteer coordinator for the Freethinkers Association of Central Texas and serves as Vice-president. He is also the head organizer/coordinator for Austin Atheists Helping the Homeless and serves on the board of directors for the international organizations of Recovering from Religion and Foundation Beyond Belief. Phil previously served as Vice-president and volunteer coordinator for the Atheist Community of Austin, was a co-host for The Atheist Experience, and served as a lay leader at the Atheist/Humanist Meeting on Lackland Air Force Base. He was recently published in the American Atheists magazine for the 2022 Q1 issue.
