    Well, this is pointless. You don't seem to understand that the warp factor is not a speedometer. The Galaxy class was 9 times faster than the Intrepid. This isn't a whimsy, its canonical fact. If the Galaxy class had been sent to the Delta Quadrant it could have made it back in 7 years, but it would have taken the Intrepid 70. Warp is more like RPMs than a specific speed. The Borg cube, canonically, is faster than the Galaxy class, but it doesn't do it by going faster than light, it does it by moving through subspace using a conduit network.

    Conspicuously absent is an awareness of older science fiction. In E.E. "Doc" Smith's _Lensman_ series, published from 1948-1966, the spaceship Dauntless was said to have an easy cruising speed in galactic space of 80 parsecs per hour (~2,290,000 times the speed of light) and once in intergalactic space cruised at a sustained speed of 100,000 parsecs per hour (~2,860,000,000 times the speed of light). This would put it solidly in sixth place on this list, and possibly fifth depending on how much higher its top speed was than its cruising speed.

      Fiction is a broad genre and science fiction is a subgenre within it. There are valid arguments that Star Wars is a fantasy story which just happens to be set in space, and not a science fiction story at all. A number of other stories with starships are similar, some with even stronger arguments to being fantasy than you have for Star Wars. If you want to criticise this video, there are plenty of valid reasons to rip it to shreds. Try picking on almost any of those instead.

  • @saladinbob
    @saladinbob Před 6 dny

    Your chart is wrong because it fails to include the Imperium of Man (40K) whose ships can cross the galaxy in a matter of months, putting it on par with the fastest ships on the list. You have the Aeldari who, since you decided to include the Borg and set the precedent for assisted travel (they achieve their speeds via Transwarp conduits, an external construct), the Aeldari can travel even faster via the Webway. Then there is the Necrons whose ships are arguably faster than the the IoM. Inclusion of the 40K races would push out a third of this list. You also fail to mention Dune's Spacing Guild whose Highliners can fold space and travel instantly which is the fastest of any of them. None of these are obscure IPs and are both popular.

    • @a-blivvy-yus
      @a-blivvy-yus Před 3 dny

      And if you're counting the Borg as assisted travel and introducing the webway, Stargate's Puddle Jumpers (and the Ori ships) get instantaneous interstellar or intergalactic travel using stargates/supergates. And if you consider novels (which are somewhat "obscure" in modern media by default), you could put several entire species from the Xeelee Sequence in that "instantaneous" tier of speed or a half-step below it, and the Xeelee and Photino Birds can go even faster than instantaneous because time manipulation drives are a thing. On which topic, we can go back to mainstream sci-fi and throw the TARDIS up on that top tier of better-than-instant travel to anywhere.

Being fast over short distances but unable to sustain that speed long-term, or being unable to travel across a vast empty space with no way to refuel or otherwise keep your crews alive while travelling, or relying on something which isn't available in the void between galaxies, doesn't make the speed any less fast.
