Rays Trains Volume-01 pt1 F
Like many New Zealand railway enthusiasts I had seen many great NZ still photographs since the advent of the internet and it's platform for private rail groups on Facebook, and with videos on CZcams.
When I came back to Palmerston North in 2015 I was able to track down the late Ray Mathewson and talk with him about his photography and also his rail videos which began in the early to mid 1980's. Some of these I had already seen courtesy of another departed friend in the Waikato many years ago......
I was lucky to meet not only Ray but also his wife Audrey who was still around at the time. She seemed to have been very supportive of Ray's rail hobby and in fact Ray told me that years ago when they travelled not only around New Zealand but also the USA she had a great deal of input into their trips and they acted upon her suggestion that they deviate from the big railroads and visit more of the smaller lower tier roads.
Ray also told me they both were involved in photography and shared the roles of camera and driving. In this video some if not all the pacing driving shots were piloted by Audrey, which as was also the case in the states.
When I first asked Ray about his videos and the possibility of saving them for posterity he was not so keen but did consider my requests. He was not interested in having his own YoutTube channel and with all the work involved in producing videos for public viewing.
Furthermore Ray told me that he never intended his videos to be anything other than an extra record of places they went and photographed. That being the case he travelled light. Nearly all his videos were hand held and seldom was a tripod involved. My opinion was that Ray probably believed that his videos were not of the high standard like his stills and therefore were not intended for public display.
We talked about this a number of times and eventually Ray loaned me a few VHS masters to digitize. After that he became open to further discussion and gave me permission to work some up and publish on my channel, BUT not until his passing........
Scenes include areas around Wellington, Paekakariki, McKays Crossing, Otaki, Forest Lakes, Ohau and Levin. He was also very big on the use of the "golden" half hour before sunset. Special thanks to John Bovis for his local knowledge input.
So here is my edit of the first tape that Ray gave me. (It is his Tape number 6) Remember this was in the days of the first video cameras available to the NZ public. They were all fully automatic with no manual settings I can remember. The sound was low grade and any loud sounds went into immediate distortion. Sound was often "destroyed" by distorted wind and there is no way to improve that except turning the volume down.
This particular camera had another problem in its picture. It had a very distorted shape with a nastly curl out in the top RH corner (which I have reduced somewhat) and some nasty colour in that area which is still partly seen. But for all that the history in Ray's videos is well worth the effort involved to be kept and shared.
After editing up his Tape 6 I was left with with lots of footage. Some may seem a big repetitious but it is showing the volume of traffic in and out of Wellington with less tracks than today. So I have divided this into parts 1 and 2. I hope that many will get some pleasure from this series of videos, and a nostalgic buzz for those in the lower North Island in that era..........

Thank you for the effort to make this available for us to view. Much appreciated. Can't say I've seen much video footage of popsicle DX's which was enjoyable to watch.
!!!Good video, like!!!
What did you guys carried in those wagons?
Nearly all forestry traffic on that branch line from memory 😀
any more videos from Rays Trains volumes?..bloody good watch
Yes, fairly heavy duty editing for some of it to come but hope it also turns out okay..... Volume 1 pt2 should be ready in the next few ays. Tnx for the kind works. Mike
love the orginal colour scheme of those mighty DX's and the cackle from thier exhausts. Such memories! What a bustling yard was wellington too. Spotting the old Silver Star in the background there. Gold.
How good! NZ 1980s, and a DX in fine form
Another brilliant collection of nz rail
What a fine gentleman and model railroader. And Audrey, a great supporter of Ray. Both sorely missed. Both great friends, had the pleasure of many great talks, and took his daughter for two entertaining cab rides . Liked ( Love) the videos. Original 4 windowed cabs(DX), 😍decent trains and oh wow! guardsvan's !👍👍 Thankyou
Awesome Mike. The way I remember it when I was younger in Welly. Was such a busy place!
Thanks Marty. What a shame we didnt have 4k and modern gear back when ! I sent you several notes on Messenger several weeks ago in case you didnt see them. Cheers 👍
I would like extend to you a big thanks for posting these videos. They are gold!
Heavy freight trains of New Zealand!!!
Things that have (mostly) disappeared since this was taken: DQ locos, Mechanical alarm bells, Corn Cobb locos, twin DBrs in Fruit Salad, searchlight signals, Ganz Mavag Units in blue, North Island DX's, elephant-style locos, North Island DXr. I cant say I miss the Cato blue liveries tho. And I didnt spot any EE units.
I lived in Pukerua Bay toward the end of the 20th century and spent a lot time watching trains between Plimmerton and Paekak. It's nice to see a lot of footage from around that area at about that time. The late afternoon weekend goods heading north were generally long trains (usually two of them) and in the summer I watched them from the beach. It was a nice place to live.
Love this one!
I am interested to know what you really like in this one plse ? 😃
@MikeRail The sound for one Another is the trains you captured, especially KA 942.
@@KiwiRailSpotter Kool tnx, only the one olde steam shot I think, there was another steam sequence in an earlier Volume though.... Tnx
All those trucks off the road great less ruc
Excellent video
listening through headphones. unbelievable
Thank you Glenn 😃 A lot of time went into that one.
2:31 the McDonald’s Big Mac truck passing Paekākāriki
I have a couple of videos if you want them or know someone who does. It's not trains but it's the promo vid for first media (cable) TV and a vid of new year's TV on 31st Dec 1999
No thanks I only do NZ railways. I guess there will be someone out there who may see you offer and get in touch. Cheers
Great archive footage👏
Great shots. Nice tele work showing the curves and grades!
Another great vid thanks for sharing.
I spent untold hours on the sound track in these volumes, this one is still way below par for what I would expect but there is lots of improvements in most scenes 😴
Thank you for these videos. I can remember the Dbr class locos out on the main line and operating down on the West Coast.
I'm loving these videos, especially the telephoto shots. I'm also very impressed how Mr ? can get from certain scenes to the next one so quick . Although years ago when these trains rain there were speed restrictions on trains going through the Paekok to Pukerua Bay tunnels....But still...😄
Careful planning and lots of luck. I did a few paces in the late 80's with my son videoing on the ECMT and Kinleith Branch. Traffic was much lighter those times but even so it only took one slow road vehicle to wreck the best plans !
Love seeing these memories of how rail was.....just wondering if you’ve got anything of the Gracefield branch in action?
I will ask but doubt it Gareth, the guy tended to follow the Twins initially and chased trains out of Wellington north to about Otaki and back.... I will put up everything I can and you may see something I dont know accurately.... Regards Mike😌😀
thank you
Pleasure Glenn, lets know if you spy any boo boo's or double ups of scenes as it has got quite confusing with so many similar trains in different videos..... cheers 🤔
cheers Mike
Hope there is lots more to came very much enjoy stepping back wards in time with these
I am about halfway through these older videos. Cheers Mike
Great sounds!
Do you have any off northland rail from the 90s
I swapped some of my early vids from that era with Dave Allen who was a keen rail enthusiast back then. Once I get this set done and tapes from two other families I will take a look at it. It was still in the horrible VHS times and most vidcams were terrible.... But still its history. Regards Mike
thank you
Our pleasure Glenn, few more to come over the next weeks.... Tnx Mike 😀
Thanks for the video. Great memories.
Our pleasure. More to come soon.
Pure delight to see the Railways as they were with real locomotives👍👍
Each era in time has its own technology and equipment, its certainly great to turn back the clock and remember how it was. More to come soon.
Awesome to see same older footage especially from this time period very much enjoyed watching this
Yes Jamie as time goes by these older videos certainly become more popular. Cheers
My old patch, ex Kawerau, 1976 - 1988.
Great to see & hear the pair of angry DBR's.
Sure is, that hill in and out of Wellington sure makes for great sights and sounds for those who live amongst it. More coming soon mate
Nice natural sound mix Mike. A1.
Thank you David, its a shame those early analogue cams had such poor audio capture, but hey that was just the technology of the day.... cheers
enjoy manawatu videos.started my driving career in palm. north mid 70s.retired to feilding now.good work.
Thanks Peter, spent a year here in 2003, went back to my homeland in the Eastern Waikato for some years but came back to Palmy 8yrs ago. Have enjoyed the video captures I have made and have met a number of Palmy and Wellington drivers while out and about. I do it for my own pleasure and to add something useful on YT for history and the locals. Enjoy your retirement in Feilding. One of my favorite areas is from there to Halcombe. Every few metres there is another site to trial new camera angles....... 🤠
cheers mike.we have a 22ft coaster bus we live in full time.easy to cruise up the trunk and park up for great views of passing trains.your videos are top notch.cameras have improved over the years.keep up the good work.might see you sometime filming.@@MikeRail
Very cool.
Seems a lifetime ago now Darryl, and for rail rolling stock, tracks and staff it has been.....
4012's paintwork looking rather scruffy too.
Superb sounds. Those DAs were being thrashed! Those Garmonsway lads took some lovely still pictures too.
Thanks, so much has changed since
Thanks for the video. Really enjoyed watching it.
Always nice to see and hear a train on thr line
Those Dx locomotive s make an awesome sound under acceleration. In that era, the did the silverferns meet at National Park?
Mike that is most likely the only DB footage on the net at the moment. Great catch!
Yep I was just a few years too late to get the Db class. My very first day out with a hired VHS cam I caught a Db helper behind a Dc on the ECMT at Morrinsville but that was very tame, just shunting. We are very lucky to have these videos from Gordon and Jeff, more to come as I work through their tapes.... Have sent you a PM with more info 😀
Awesome Mike. Not much DA stuff on CZcams at all 🙂
Tnx Marty. Yes and its good hear those olde horses being worked hard, restored are good but need to be handled with care for long futures.
love it Mike!!
😍
God how I loved the sound of the DA's , better than these new ones .
