Condenser Shootout: Røde S1 vs Lewitt MTP340CM vs Audio Technica AT873R vs EV RE410
The Røde S1 is a true condenser, the rest is all electret condenser microphon.
The Røde is taitored to have less proximity effect (so less low end), very detailed in the mids and a not harsh top end.
The Lewitt is similar to the Røde, specially in the lows, but has way more highs.
The Audio Technica is hyper cardioid and more an instrument mic, it is really small. It has the widest frequency response of them all.
The EV is fat in the low end and has a significant treble boost.

The Beyerdynamic M500 has a normally corrugated Ribbon (not the stock piston corrugation) and was converted to XLR. I know that I compare apples to oranges, but the Ribbon is so much richer and got so much more low end. By now means is the Oktava a bad mic, has way more high end and sounds thinner. 0:00 Beyerdynamic M500 0:31 Oktava MK012

Sony ZV-E10 Built in Mic vs Sony EMC-MS907 extern vs Oktava MK012

Built in Mic is at the lowest mic input setting on the camera, and still very ‚compressed/distort‘. The Sony EMC-MS907 is a mid-side microphone, so you can choose between 90° and 120° recording angle. Do to it’s age, it is quite noisy if you record softer sounds, be aware of that. I don't think so, In most professional studios is A-B still standard! Liebe Grüsse Benno
great vid, but why's it panned backwards?
sometimes I fuck up and maybe I can fix it: czcams.com/video/19SC2dyPU4I/video.html Liebe Grüsse Benno
Very interesting, I am into minimal drum recording myself and I made the best experience wir a cheap ribbon-mic pointing from my right shoulder to the snare. But it captures still too much information from my untreated basement-room, so I will try the SM7B as an Mono-overhead. Maybe it can also reduce the Hihat-bleed.
A treated room is the other option and if you DIY it may even cheaper. Liebe Grüsse Benno
Nicely done! I watched (or rather listened to) the ribbon version as well, both are really useful. Very much appreciate your attention to detail in volume levels and editing. Tip for anyone listening critically: Close your eyes, your brain will focus more on the sound.
Thanks a lot. Liebe Grüsse Benno

For me they don't. Liebe Grüsse Benno
Cool comparison, but there’s an issue with the Glyn Johns example: the kick is significantly off center (it was the same on your previous video).
One of the Problems with Glyn Johns, correct. In Recorderman Snare and Kick are dead center. Liebe Grüsse Benno
@@bennokaiser698 But I've heard examples of the Glyn Johns technique where the kick is centered.
@@fullmixstudio4585 You have to decide if the BD ore the SD is in the center, both is only in post possible.
Great sound! You’ve got a new sub, look forward to more videos
Thank's a lot. I get to work. Liebe Grüsse Benno
Kick on that A-B is fantastic. Either A-B or recorderman in this specific sample would go long way with couple of individual mics. Fantastic work! 👍 Glynn Johns is a bit hyped method at this point. The truth is, it is VERY tricky technique in general. It’s cool and all until that one too loud hit on floor Tom or ride at the wrong moment. Yeah if lucky you might be able to edit/replace but that’s another subject…

Hi Benno, Thank you for the link, the differences are even more clear in this recording! Kind regards, Patrick
You are very welcome! Liebe Grüsse Benno
It's A-B for me.
A-B sounds quite unnatural for me Recorderman comes closest to what I hear, so my dynamics are more balanced. Have you heard this on: czcams.com/video/CKQ1hPzm8ZE/video.html Liebe Grüsse Benno
Listened to the other one too, with the non-ribbons. Quite happy that on both I liked Recordman & Glyn Johns the most on both. Since it's less outlay on mics. Recordman is a tighter more focused sound, Glyn Johns is wider, and with more slam for the kick & floor tom. I suppose I might go with Glyn Johns for songs that call for a bigger drum sound, and Recorderman for a more compact drum sound.
If you take Recorderman higher you can get a wider image. In this room however this is the sweet spot! It is a bunker with a hight of only 2.2m. Liebe Grüsse Benno
Ah, much better with the correction. I still think ORTF sounds a bit muddy compared to X-Y and A-B, and I don't like M-S at all. This time, I think I have to go with A-B. It's still a bit wider than I like, but the sound is very clean. Recorderman would be great if I were looking for something with more "classic rock" character, without the issues of Glyn Johns you mentioned in another post.
M-S is somewhat strange, With Ribbons it is much better: czcams.com/video/CKQ1hPzm8ZE/video.html Liebe Grüsse Benno
M-S can be great with the right mics. Look at a Shure VP88 or a MKH40/30 System. A large diagramm in "8" is not a good way to start for accurate M-S - as you can hear here.
@@hafibeat834 I totale agree, for me Ribbons is the answer: czcams.com/video/CKQ1hPzm8ZE/video.html Liebe Grüsse Benno
@@bennokaiser698 Well, the answer is correct placement und the use of REAL Figure 8 in a proper MS-Setup. If you like the sound of ribbons it's another topic. If you have the chance to use a SD-8 like a MKH30, MK8 or KM120 - go for it.
Taking into account both sound and imaging, something in between A-B and ORTF would be ideal to me. AB was maybe a little too wide and a bit on the bright side, while ORTF was a good compromise image-wise, but the sound was rather muddy.
Thanks!
Ab always hard to pull off on recording if you want a focus snare sound.. maybe in live it’ll work.. soo recorders and glyn for me
In Glyn Johns Bassdrum is off center, so Recorderman is very nice specially with Ribbons: czcams.com/video/CKQ1hPzm8ZE/video.html Liebe Grüsse Benno

_// Thanks for sharing the video! Let me tell you something important: God loves you! God loves us ! He is no respecter of persons! because God wants us all to be saved! and let's go to the knowledge of the “Truth” God wants to save us from eternal damnation, which we all deserve because of sin, who entered the world through Adam, and death entered through sin, and thus death passed to all human beings, Therefore, we are all “Sinners” But God's Love was so great for us, that he sent his only Son (Jesus Christ), gave him to this world, to die and rise for all of us! No Respect of Persons! so that everyone who believes in Jesus Christ does not go to eternal punishment, but rather has “Eternal Life!” “ Jesus Christ died for our sins, according to the Scriptures; and he was buried, and rose again on the third day, according to the Scriptures Jesus Christ came to call sinners to “Repentance! “ and, he who believes in Him, has “Eternal Life! “But whoever refuses to believe in Jesus Christ, the wrath of God remains on him. Then, as through Adam's transgression, condemnation came to all human beings, in the same way, through the justice of Jesus Christ, justification of life came to all human beings! All of us who believe in The Only Savior of the world! The Only Mediator between God and us! The Lord Jesus Christ! The son of God! All of us who trust in Him; we have “Eternal Life! “ And we must know that there is salvation in no one else; because there is no other name under heaven, given to human beings, in which we can be saved. Only by Believing/Trusting in “Jesus Christ” can we be Saved! But Jesus Christ also said: Not everyone who says to me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Therefore, we must be doers of the Word of God! and not only listeners and/or readers, deceiving ourselves. So let's read the Word of God! There is His Will! what God wants us to do! Let us read mainly the Gospels; Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, and let us pray to God, our Heavenly Father, all the days of the life that He gave us! God loves you! God loves us! To Him alone be the Glory Forever! Amen! Which do you think it is the best among them ?
soundwise the S1, not really behind and the winner in bang for the buck S125. Liebe Grüsse Benno
Love the Glynn Johns technique, but it does require a lot of discipline on the drummer to play consistently and not over work stuff. If the part is too busy and recorded that way it can be hellishly difficult to make it sit in a mix without the drums becoming the entire focus. But maybe that's what's needed.
Interesting! For me as a drummer, Recorderman comes the closest to what I'm hearing, so the dynamics are spot on. with ribbons, I like it even more: czcams.com/video/CKQ1hPzm8ZE/video.html Liebe Grüsse Benno
Damn that Beyerdynamic sounds good. Nice balance, whereas the Sennheiser's sound detailed but a bit trebly. SM58 is a classic and doesn't sound great by comparison, but I bet in a noisy live setting it might just get the best sound the easiest

So when you say magnetic gap in the D12, what do you mean exactly? I always wondered how exactly D12's are restored to get their low end back etc.
In this pic: i.ebayimg.com/images/g/LsgAAOSwyDFbH5mJ/s-l1600.jpg it is the red circle. The magnetic field is the strongest there and collects metal debris over the years. If you clean that mostly the bass is back. Liebe Grüsse Benno
