How often do you water in 90 degree summer weather?
That depends on a number of factors. Generally, anything in containers needs more frequent watering. The smaller the container, the more frequent it also needs to be watering (often). The more direct sun it gets during the day increases the watering frequency. In real general terms, in 90F, you might be watering trees every 1-3 days.
@@SimplyJapaneseMaplesI’ve been trying to hold off and water every 4 days because I’m so afraid of root rot. (It’s planted in the ground.) Thank you for responding!
@@Sandi0921 Invest in a $10 water probe.
I like your concerns though. The probe is handy, and for containers, too. Water can be absorbed very quickly, and often, especially in the high heat. The hot air, even with no sun on the leaves is really pulling the moisture out of the plants. Of course, trees can actually close their stomata to eliminate the vapour loss to some degree (but this stuff is too academic for my knowledge). In colder periods of the year, with frequent rains, a person can definitely get into trouble with root rot, and in combination with poorly draining soil/container mix. I have killed some trees before!
@@SimplyJapaneseMaplesReally appreciate all your information and I never even thought of a water probe.! Definitely will get one. Thank you..
I planted mine behind a bigger tree and it should only get sun in early morning. It’s only in the ground a few weeks so we’ll see how it goes in the next decade.
I have heard growers provide all kinds of sun exposure. The one constant seems to be, you won't get the same variegation from year to year.
To that color on inaba and Shaina o my dang
I have 2 Coral Bark JM in full sun and they love it. I’m in Toronto zone 5. Just recently got an Autumn Moon. It’s still in pot. Any experience if that can take full sun? Thanks for sharing your knowledge
Hi. Protection from hot afternoon sun is recommended. Sango kaku on the other hand is a sun worshippor for sure!
I´m still a new collector, but my Jordan and Going green are Going Crazy! 😂 They have 20 inches each and it´s only from Junes growth. The others are like normal, and then I have some like the Bihou, Tsukushigata and Emperor one that don´t have any new growth until now. I just keep staring every day searching for new leaves 😂
Thanks
just amusing,
Xin chào bạn ,khu vườn của bạn nhiều cây cảnh đẹp quá ,tôi rất thích khu vườn của bạn 👍.
Why not cypress mulch?
I don't know about cypress. I mention cedar mulch here. Cedar is well known to have certain natural compounds (tannins) which negatively affect the growth of other plants.
@@SimplyJapaneseMaples oh… i may have heard it wrong. I’ve forever done landscaping for a living, and i don’t think I’ve ever used it or had anyone request it specifically. Cypress is the most popular and most common where i live. Hard to find non-dyed mulch (in bulk). Not sure if commonality or popularity varies by region. I like pine bark mulch but it just doesn’t stretch as far as cypress or cover completely
@@Midnight_Gardener Ya, I'm not familiar with Cypress. Of course the materials available vary from region to region as you stated. Fir bark, hemlock, pine, etc..
@@SimplyJapaneseMaples is fir and hemlock mulch common in your area?! Or you just making examples? I’m not sure I’ve ever seen either in mulch form. Small chance I’ve come across fir… definitely never seen hemlock. Can’t really grow them here at all. I don’t think either really get down to zone 8b
@@Midnight_Gardener It's everywhere in the PNW.
I really like your Japanese maple. It is healthy and growing vigorously. 👍👍 I wonder if it can be shipped to the United States? 😅😅
Absolutely. Most maples are hairless, so this one is very rare.
Thanks for the great video and mentioning Omure yama. I was wondering why I did not hear about it more because the photo does look very nice in the book.
I've only seen one in the landscape and it was as advertised. Personally, from the moment I saw that picture in the book I loved it. Has very similar leaf shape to some of the shirasawanum trees, also.
You should do a collaboration video with Mr maple 🍁
Great advise .
Nice!
I bought koto no ito from you.
You have some great looking maples. If you were able to shipped to the states I seen one I would get.I enjoy watching your videos
Thank you. Fortunately for you, you have a number of nurseries that offer mail order in the US.
Yes Im a balcony gardener and JMs are great for me! Are there Jms you especially recommend for shaded balconies? Us urban growers would love to know❤
If we're talking full shade all day, then I'd select the reticulated varieties that don't have red colours in them, or the variegated types with white. I mean, shade is one thing but shade that still is bright is another thing. Bright shade, from reflected sources of light or due to high overhead shade from trees, balconies etc. is different because it's still fairly light. In this scenario, I'd be comfortable using many different types. Otherwise, heavy shading and not much reflected light, stick with the most sensitive to light varieties available.
@@SimplyJapaneseMaplesgood point! How about bright shade? I get 2 hours of direct morning sun against white brick, then the balcony above me shades me for the rest of the time. But we’re protected from wind and rain which is great!
Waoo that's great...
Mapel tree sell
Have SJM ever sold Seki no Kegon online ?
I've tried to get it but without success.
I have two ryusens on my balcony, in hanging baskets! And theyre perfect! They cascade really nicely that way, but also they seem to handle dry, hot, sunny and windy hanging basket conditions very well. They seem tough as nails, and Im glad not to fill my hanging baskets with annuals every year anymore.
Thanks so much for this video.
Uh oh you hurt your thumb!
Zone please
Canadian Hardiness zone 6b. US zone approx 5b(?). The two systems don't correlate precisely. Our coldest winter temps are about -20C to -23C and only for a few days in the winter. Typically --5C to -10C.
Are the trees grafted?
Yes.
The plastic shelter must work well to keep the sun from damaging your hands.
Very pretty
I honestly don’t understand the difference between pollard pruning and normal pruning of JP. How to avoid this mess and what is the difference?
Google it... Imagine you have a lollipop in front of you, and then you take a knife and take the top off. It's no different. This technique is often done on fruit trees, weeping willows and many other trees. It's pretty harsh but on the wrong tree, such as a JM, the effect is terrible.
Pruning is about thoughtful cuts, well-timed cuts, proper tool usage, and deciding when something should or shouldn't be pruned. A lot of damage is done quickly that can't be undone without a little bit of education.
@@SimplyJapaneseMaples I did google it but everything is why you should do it. I was trying to understand the science behind why it grows a mess and doesn’t activate the two prior nodes as with “normal” pruning
Very helpful to have demonstrative trees! Thanks!!
Lovely!
Hi. I have a question do you guys ship to the USA I’m in Southern California and I’m looking for a Beni Chidori Japanese Maple. Do you guys carry the cultivar?.
Hello. No ship to the US unfortunately. There are quite a few nurseries in the US that do.
@@SimplyJapaneseMaples Thank you very much anyway!.
Mendocino Maples is in Cali, and I think also, Essence of the Tree.
@@SimplyJapaneseMaples I already buy some trees from them before and I ask them for the Beni Chidori and they don’t carry them!. I found a nursery up in Washington and he had some but he wouldn’t ship. I’m going to see how long it will take me to get one. Thank you very much I really appreciate it. Thanks for sharing and great videos I really enjoy them!!.
Really been in love with Shirasawanum lately. I have Aureum, Sensu and Moonrise and I just adore them. I've been eying a Johin and a local nursery.... but Mirte looks the best to my eye right and I want that for my collection, looks more full moon in leaf shape. What's your favorite Shirasawanum?
An established maple in the landscape is going to be more resilient. Of course, hot summer places you may see some damage no matter what. And trees in containers especially need your help compared to trees in the ground.
Did you put a sealant on the graft area,
The sealant was applied at the time the cutting and rootstock were physically connected. To keep moisture in and keep fungi and bacteria out while the union heals. It's not for any sort of wound healing purposes.
Mine arrives tomorrow!
I bought Sensu from you.
Does Celebration really stand out from the other ghosts?
Good question. You could ask that about any red vs another red. Or any dissectum vs another dissectum. Sometimes the differences are subtle. And it usually comes down to what your eyes like. 'Celebration' is new to me this year so I'm still observing, to be honest. Wish I could be more helpful
Which would you recommend for zones 9/10? Southern Cal?
Honestly, it's totally out of my element. That zone is beyond anything comparable here in Canada (and our zones have different variables that get you to the numbers). I would web search stuff on Texas and California Japanese maples. I'm confident you have options.
I thing I bought my 5 ghosts from you. One or two last season and the rest this season
You are not afraid of ghosts.
I am hoping I get my order of 2 this coming week.
You definitely will!

Really like Bronze Age.
Hello. Liked and subscribed. Question regarding the mulches and peat moss etc in potted plants: I read that it can get water logged due to its nature of being a moisture attractant and holder. I found this to be true recently in a couple dozen 3 gallon Skip Laurel plants I am in the process of planting. Very little root bound appearance as you would typically find in a potted plant and instead the lower half of the root ball / container was pretty much just black mush. These came from one of my regular wholesale nurseries that I deal with as a landscaper. If I am potting plants for personal use like these maples do I need to be concerned about materials like this that hold too much moisture or do you think these were just over watered?
Hi. Japanese maples, first and foremost, need good aeration in the rootball. Regardless of the materials utilized to create the container mix, this is major consideration. Local selection is going to factor heavily into choices, too. Since this video was posted I no longer have access to the aged bark. Some people only have pine, not fir bark mulch and so forth. For environmental reasons and it's practical applications, I recommend avoiding peat. The aeration is created by the assortment of material sizes in the mix. Perlite or course sand and when available, the bark mulch help to create this. The potting mixes that originate from nurseries are not always the best. That's another discussion. Don't use them as a guideline. Or sometimes the mix is exhausted and no longer effective by the time the plants reach the customer. Feel free to email me with further questions on this.
@@SimplyJapaneseMaples thanks for the quick reply. I’ll reach out with any potting related questions in the future. I think the mix was “exhausted” as you said by the time I got around to planting these. I purchased them last fall so they were in borrowed time. To make matters worse, they have a bad case of shots disease. Looking like they were shot with a shot gun. I’m in the process of cutting off all the old leaves, a tedious task, and the new ones are coming in looking good and not fully opened yet. I purchased some Dragocil to treat them to see if I can kill off the remainder of the disease. 🦠.
What's your favorite shirasawanum?
Well 'Jordan' and 'Aureum' are amazing but 'Sensu' is the winner I think.
Tôi rất thích khu vườn của bạn với những cây màu lá rất đẹp nhìn khu vườn lai liên tưởng đến mùa thu 🍂👍🤝.
Japanese maples when coordinated can give you autumn colours all summer long!
All that hard work must give you nice strong hands.
Beautiful collection! I thoroughly enjoyed this video
My orange dream got scorched by wind a week after the new leaves opened. It’s looking rough since but I plucked all the leaves and we’ll see how the second set looks in a few weeks
That's a bummer. Did you know that at the base of the leaf petiole (the leaf stem) there is a bud waiting in case the leaf petiole and leaf fall off? Pretty cool stuff. So, ya, your tree looks like heck but it will rebound. Too bad you didn't get to enjoy it.
@@SimplyJapaneseMaples I did know that. That’s why I plucked the dead leaves. Thanks for the reply. I enjoy your videos. I will be tuned in and sub’d for the future.
