What you say about people taste and general appreciatiation for paintings is true just for natural landscapes. Less likely they will like any still life. Almost impossible that they will like to take in their living room any realistic portrait. But we don't do that for them. We do because we just love to do it such as your potter does.

I think for as many people who exist in this world, there's a drive to make something MORE than just ourselves. We have something inside of every single one of us to express, speak a sort of visual language to the world through art and creation. Painting is an eloquent (if not expensive) means of doing that. It "personifies" the abstract of our thoughts, giving it life. So I've always had immense appreciation to people like Mark who help give tools and tips to others to allow them to take this personal journey. Thank you.

I am scared to death to touch oils after reading about them and thinking of my asthma, however, painting or anything creative always lifts my mood . You do know that they teach therapist this very subject. Will you ever dabble with acrylics ? Thanks so much

Yes to the other pointers and appreciate your honesty but stop promoting Ai as a tool. It is stolen data. It is theft. Look at the lawsuits happening right now. If it was pure Ai sure. But it is not. It is different getting inspiration from other artists, either from their photos, their painting, music etc... it is human interaction. Creativity is shared and we inspire from it. There is a mind behind it that went through suffering, joy and achievement to get it. Now we just want it fast... Through stolen data. Sure there's way to simplify our workflow - like PS has a fast Ai selection tool. Do your own pasting of photos if that is the case. I do that because of the field i work in and i use a projector because i do not have time to sketch then transfer. Need to pay rent etc. and taxes are killing me. Buy the photos from the artists, or donate to the artist who inspired you... I just want us to be very very very careful how we praise 'AI' over true human creativity. Technology is great BUT there should be limits if we want the human species to survive. I cannot point all of this but Hayao Miyazaki is right - it is an insult to life itself.

I would think that if someone requires another person to show them that, “being creative” can relieve their depression, in this case, it would be just a band-aide. Typically a truly creative person realizes its value early on. If it has to be shown, then maybe the problem is a little deeper … and that art, or the creative process, is just masking the issue. I’m not trying to be mean. Just thinking it through a bit.

This is why I do my paintings, illustrations to print on.....clothes. I want people to not just put my paintings and illustrations on walls but to wear them on their jackets, t-shirts, tracksuits, leggings, sneakers, bags and hangbags, even prints on denim and dresses. It's changed my life and other people. They tell me they get people stopping them asking them what does the paintings mean. When I finish them, I send it to client with also a detailed explanation of story behind the painting or illustration. That way they can have a full conversations sharing the story. I found it has brought people together, got them out of being socially awkward to use it to converse and talk about themselves too.

I went through a horrible trauma and healed through art and music. I realized my entire life of living with Abuse, I escaped through Art and it healed me. I now have a nonprofit to help heal trauma and PTSD through the arts. It changes the brain and creates healing. Today the schools have many kids that are suffering depression and it’s because they have eliminated the arts from the schools. The schools think that the arts aren’t important yet, these kids are in school eight hours a day with 3 to 4 hours of homework only working on academics. No Creative outlet for them to express themselves in a positive way. And then they wonder why there’s drug addiction and suicide and depression among the young people. Even though so many people in authority do not value the arts, it is the backbone of mental health and of appreciating beauty all around us.

So many plusses to creating. My brother like all my sisters and I have that (gene?)to create. When he stopped painting, I asked him why and he said it was too much pressure to constantly create and be successful. There is very complex psychology in being a creative . Sometimes just because you can dosen't mean you must. And then there is the compulsive aspect. Meandering thoughts :)

Thanks for all you videos Mark, and this one is on point. I started painting again a few years ago initially with the sole intention of mental health improvement. Once you get going, painting is happening all the time even when driving. It helps to create new neuropathways and break out of the phsychological ruts our minds can get trapped in. It helps us branch off to more positove things and life becomes way more dynamic. Helps immensly with depression. Its also fun to share your works that you are particularly satisfied with for whatever reason. You feel like you earned it when you are rewarded by it. And so on ...

I worked for many years in a psychiatric hospital where Art Therapy was a key component to the overall treatment. Besides completing a finished product that one lays one's hands to, the most reinforcing element to every painting I do is not in producing a masterpiece but in learning at least one thing about oil painting from each finished project. To me, that's what's most satisfying. For every painting I've done, I can identify at least one thing I've learned.

It's good that he's recommending a slightly violet-leaning red here. An orange-leaning red will _never_ yield a bright, vibrant violet such is found in rainbows, many types of flowers, some sunsets, much clothing, etc. For those types of secondaries, you absolutely must have a violet red on your palette as shown. Try it yourself! Mix ultramarine first with a violet red as recommended here, and then with a orangey red such as Cadmium Red and you'll see there's a rather dramatic difference! (You'll notice his recommended alternative red has the term "permanent" in the name. That's because traditional Alizarin Crimson was pretty fugitive but nowadays, one can choose from a variety of lightfast violet reds created from a synthetic pigment called "quinacridone"; PV-19 should be the pigment listed on the tube and one of them mimics Alizarin Crimson quite well.) I'm afraid I can't agree however that you can really mix "any color" from just these five. An orangey red (such as Cadmium) is the minimum you must add, but honestly you should also add a green-leaning blue (like Cerulean), and a green-leaning yellow (such as Hansa) to the palette shown here. These are the _must-haves_ if you really are going to mix "any color," regardless of what CZcamsrs tell you. There's no escaping it because of the _physics_ involved in the reflection of light off of paint film, which sadly isn't taught widely and very few painters learn enough about. Nice-to-haves include Phthalo Green and Phatholo Blue (a green-leaning blue), because of their strength and transparency. It's also advisable to have Raw and Burnt Sienna, even though these hues can be mimicked using the split-primary palette I outlined above (btw, google image search split primaries!). The siennas are single-pigment earth-tone paints that are prized for for a level of clarity, even when thinned, that simply can't be replicated when mixing three of the primaries because paint mixing is _subtractive_ and each pigment one adds takes away vibrancy and clarity from a mixture. And if you are going to paint sunsets (or rainbows, or oranges), you might want to keep a small tube of cadmium orange on hand, just for those purposes. So really, your paint box should have 12 colors, plus possibly a little cad orange. Will you always lay out all 12 on your palette? No. But there are plenty of colors and color effects a three-primary palette can never, ever give you. It's science.
