Karl-Heinz Ziethen: The Guru of Juggling by Alberto Fontanella (Book Review)
This a new type of video that I wanted to make and I plan on hopefully making more of these in the future.
As a person who loves books and loves telling people about them and having good discussions, this is a cool series for me to try while also encourage people reading and learning about juggling history in the juggling community.
I hope this is enjoyable and please feel free to give me some feedback and to check out the book itself.

I've been working on making this video on and off for about a month and I finally finished it. I've been recently passionate about creating cool content on here that helps the juggling community as a whole and anyone who is wanting to become a better juggler. So this is an insight into how I think about practice. This is also one practice in which I decided such things so not all my practices a...

Amazing 🎉
Now I really want to read the book. Thanks for reviewing the book. I agree that technical juggling is advancing.
Awesome
😮🎉
What a pattern
You’re in an elite group!❤
Very Clean!
You are “Awesome “, Love You Grandson
More vidéos like this one, it's awesome !!!
What clubs are they?
Seeing this a bit late but definitely the best 7 club juggler of this time!
No words😮😮😮
What shoes are u wearing
What are the balls and specs- infinities?
I admire your interest and knowledge about juggling history. Unfortunately, the general public doesn't appreciate the difficulty and ability involved with high level juggling. Casting pearls before swine so to speak. As for how it differs now from the past, the only constant in the universe is change.
Awesome. For your algo rhythms.
This was definitely inspirational. You make it look easy. Amazing how relaxed you are while practicing these patterns. How many years have you been juggling? How much time do you average practicing per day?
Great being great at something isn’t it ❤❤😅 I enjoyed your greatness! Striving for greatness in juggling! Thanks
It’s definitely weird growing up with ONLY ever seeing juggling on CZcams until I was older, and now hearing about how “great” performers used to be. For me there are many videos that have impacted and amazed me more than seeing some of the best in person acts ever could. Although I do appreciate a well polished, individual act. I think the whole world is going through a rebirth, not just juggling, and we have no idea where it will take us. Even if the growth is uncomfortable right now, it will be growth in the end. Love this, make more!
Thanks Tanner! I’m glad you enjoyed it! Yeah it’s interesting the age we are in. Definitely sad in some ways like the variety arts aren’t as big as they used to be but I think however juggling has been advancing in so many different ways such as people really pushing what’s possible only as hobbyists. Hopefully variety arts will come back around in a cool new and modern way.
I can do 30 tricks but with 3 balls😅
Hi Spencer, do you have any tips for how to get accurate and consistent high throws when you do tricks like 5 up 720s and stuff because its hard to keep them accurate and high and manage to pull it off everytime. Maybe provide good juggling sequences or drills to help practice them. Thanks! Also that 7 club 7 up was INSANE!
Hello! Thank you for the comment! What comes to mind when I do 5up 720s is increasing speed of throws and maintaining a narrowish throwing path. Getting accurate with throwing higher and faster as well is what is necessary. So finding siteswaps that encourage that I think may be a way of training it. Like 933 is always a good one. Also just practicing 3ups and 5ups without the 360 but as fast as you can with enough accuracy to get back into the pattern is something I’d do.
Alright thank you so much for the tips. I’ll work on it next practice but it literally just started raining outside :p so next time I practice I’ll do those. Also, trick request: you should try doing 3-4 rounds of db97531 with balls I feel that you definitely have the ability to work on getting that many rounds of it, who knows maybe even 5 or 6, maybe 7, possible 8 or 9 or 10. 👋
Dangggggg 😳
Awesome Spencer!! You made me practise today, great job🎉
Damnnnnnnn
Wow
Great Video I really enjoyed it I’d appreciate rough time stamps like “intro”, “balls”, “rings” and “clubs” for those specially interested in one of those
Awesome, you must be one of the top all round numbers juggler in the world. Looking forward to you beating Gatto's legendary 7 club WR one day😄
Glad to know about the book now, Spencer. I met Karl at Chicago professional juggler and historian Paul Bachman’s house of juggling treasures. He was staying Paul’s house for a month. It was also a nice surprise to see Karl and Paul randomly when I was performing a strolling and stage show job at Chicago’s Navy Pier. It was very clear Karl (and Paul) loved juggling history.
Thanks for the comment and story! Yeah I have so much appreciation for Karl after reading this book. I would love to meet him and talk about juggling with him. Seems like a fascinating guy!
The replaceable cog in the cirque world has been sad to see. They are running a business though and they want acts that can be pulled and slotted to keep the machine moving. Back in the day acts would work their whole lives to create an extraordinary one-of-a-kind 6-10 min act. Those types of acts still hit the hardest... but they cost more, and if they want to quit or get hurt they are not easily replicated. Cirque now is high production and mostly dance acro cast. The last Cirque that featured great talent was Kooza. They decided to have a minimal touring cast and have them all killers and specialized. This is when Gatto was tapped because he fit that model.
Yeah, it’s sad to see. I mean I definitely understand it from a business perspective though. But from an artistic perspective I hope more companies spring up and give a platform to jugglers and the uniqueness they each have. The sad reality is most of the time the audience can tell a difference or there won’t be a significant business benefit in investing in the highest quality artists when you could spend less money and get those who can fill a spot already preplanned.
Super interesting, thanks
That transition from 774 into 756 has to be one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen!
Thanks so much man! 🙏🏻👊🏼
So dope!!
Great video, impressive stuff, and very good info for building up. I have little question about the patterns 561 / 801: How is it possible to throw the 1 not synchronous with the 5 or 8 from the next round. And then for the pattern 834 : how to enter this pattern? When i try to enter form the 5 ball cascade the last thrown 5 gets in the way of the 3 and 4... Thnx for sharing!!!
7 club back crosses 🤣🤣🤣
Spencer are u going to be at the bjc this year they are doing a numbers juggling comp again it would be soooo cool to see u there if u are going
😳😳😳 this deserves to go viral! Love your channel
The best juggling video of the year
Hi Spencer, I was wondering what backpack you use to carry your jugging equipment. My brother wants to know. (We met at Mondo)
I use the bags that Chris Jost makes with his company Alchemy Juggling. I highly recommend them because you can fit so many clubs in the bag as well as all the props comfortably. Also, it was great meeting you at Mondo!
OK thanks, he has been looking for a bag.@@spencethejuggler
When you practice do you use bean bags or Russian balls?
I use beanbags, specifically Jugglequip Infinities.
@@spencethejuggler Don't you think Russian balls are more accurate than beanbags?
godlike
Bravo 👏👏👏
It's crazy that those tricks are even humanly possible. It's even crazier that they seem on the verge of becoming "easy" or easy-ish for you.
Those throws are pleasing to the human eye 👽
Nice🔥🔥, what diameter are you rings?
32cm in diameter
This is a fun video style! Reminds me of the pre-youtube era of jugglers having fun in interesting locations jamming out and doing cool tricks. The 5b half shower statue of liberty at 0:48 reminds me of Thomas Dietz. Thanks to you and Eivind for filming and sharing this, happy juggling in 2024!
Thanks Joe. Yeah I miss those videos where jugglers are just jamming and having fun in a city and having kind of a vlog like video. That was kind of the intention of this one. Yeah and I definitely think of Thomas Dietz every time I do the statue of liberty 5 ball one.
❤❤ hard🎉
The level of skill in this video… wow!
Everybody cool until spencer pulls his bowling pins out
Nice one guys, seeing you both qualify 7 clubs at the same time is awesome!
Delicious!
