    Lucky enough to live in Sohar in the early 2000s. Beautiful city, and great people. Was there just as the new fish market opened. I lived on the Corniche not far from the fish market, The port was being developed at that time - eye opener seeing it now.

      Hi Gulnar, I am not an agent. I am going to copy below part of a message I sent about a month ago regarding finding a property in Muscat. The same advice goes for Sohar. In summary - drive around an look for vacant signs and call the landlord/property manager. If that is not possible, have a look in OLX (www.olx.com.om/en/) Let me know if you have any more questions. --- My first recommendation to finding a place to live in Muscat would be to drive around. Most buildings will have a sign if they have vacancies with a number to call. When you see a place you like, pull over and call the number. Often, there will be a watchman who can show you the flat immediately. In this way, you are getting a feel for the area and can check buildings that you like (and look well maintained). The second recommendation would be to check OLX (www.olx.com.om/en/) that is the go to online site for Oman. You can search for properties as well as cars, furniture, sporting goods, etc. When you speak with an agent about a listing, if it is not suitable, you can ask or they will advise if they have anything else on their books. From there you can get to see other properties.

From there you can get to see other properties. In Azaiba there is Azaiba Gardens, Azaiba Mall (flats above), Squoon Building. These are all in Azaiba north. I don't really like the feel of Azaiba south. It feels a bit industrial. It's also much easier to get to the beach from the north side. You may also want to check out the Al Mouj (traffic can be an issue due to the road layout) and Muscat Hills developments if your budget stretches. Let me know if you have any more questions.

      @Joseph Jasem, paying rent up front will definitely get you a deal with INDIVIDUALS. Flats owned by companies are not as flexible so don't be surprised if you don't get much of a discount. Starting in late 2017, it seemed the government really put pressure on companies to hire locals instead of expats. This led to many expats being sent home in the last few years. This meant there was an oversupply of places to live. Everyone was fighting for tenants (especially individuals with investment property). Corporations seem to be willing to let flats sit empty rather than lower rents. I would definitely advise you to drive a hard bargain. For a 1 year pre-payment, I would expect 10% discount. For 3 years, I would ask for 25% and see what they say.

      Glad to help. I lived in Muscat so am not an expert on Sohar. To me there are 2 parts of Sohar. There is a motorway from Muscat to Dubai that runs through Sohar. The area I feature is the east of the motorway. I consider this the older part of Sohar. On the west side of the motorway you have newer (mostly-expat) gated communities. If you choose to live there, it will be more modern and you will have all the conveniences you need. I have another video tour of a one bed flat on the Corniche (in the older part). Sorry for the delay in responding. You can find unfurnished, partially furnished and furnished flats. Most (I'd say 90%) are unfurnished or partially furnished. Unfurnished usually means there are no appliances - no cooker, no oven, no refrigerator, no washing machine, no dishwasher. Partially furnished usually means it comes with some appliances but maybe not all. Furnished apartments are pretty expensive so I usually would not recommend that unless you are planning to stay less than 2 years. Otherwise, it's cheaper to get partially furnished and buy furniture. There are lots of people coming and going all the time so used furniture is easy to find (via Facebook Marketplace or Olx). Let me know if you have more questions.

      Hi Keshav, it all depends on where you are. Muscat is the most expensive place to live. I think you could get your costs down to OMR 500 per month but I think any lower than that would be very difficult if you are responsible for all costs - meaning you have to pay for housing and transportation. To save, I would try to live close to work. Cars are expensive. Walking is only an option in summer if you live VERY close. You will be too sweaty to walk to work. Some companies provide housing and transportation (but mainly for lower paid roles). Speaking in round numbers: Housing 100, Food 200, Transport 100, Other (clothing, entertainment, household items) 100. Getting settled will have some one time costs to I wouldn't plan to save anything for the first 2 months so plan to save 500 from the third month. Check out OLX (www.olx.com.om/en/) for used items especially if you don't have a furnished place. Let me know if you have any other questions.

    Your flat is gorgeous and tastefully decorated. I love it. I might be moving to Ibri soon so I'm all about the Oman flat videos.

      Hi Tasha, there are so many housing options in Oman, it’s a good idea to check out what other people are doing so you can get an idea of what’s avialable. When I moved to Oman, I stayed in AirBnBs for a couple months so I could try out living in different neighbourhoods. Once I had a feel for the city, I narrowed down my search to 1 area. This is pretty easy to do when you just arrive and are living out of a suitcase. This is also good for checking out villas, twin villas, high rise, low rise. Also good to know the location of the local mosque if you are a light sleeper!

    I saw that you furnished the apartment yourself and I really like the choices you made, especially in the office. Was that all purchased locally and was it less or more expensive than Ikea?

      @allaboutoman6836 Před 3 lety

      Hi Tasha, just so you are aware, we do not have Ikea in Oman. The closest store is in Dubai. So, to compare apples to apples, you’d have to factor in the transportation charge to get things to Oman. However, even with these costs factored in, my furniture is more expensive. A lot of people come and go from Oman so probably the best choice is to buy used furniture. There are several Facebook Marketplace groups and a popular website called OLX which is helpful for that.

      You definitely should. The government has recently dropped visa requirements for 103 countries for stays up to 10 days so it is easier than ever to go.

      I first visited Qatar in 2012 and didn't really like it. I went back in 2019 and noticed a lot of change. Much improved, I really liked it the second time.

    Hi. You have lovely apartment. Are most apartments fully furnished? If not, is furniture generally expensive in Oman? You also mentioned in a previous comment that the rental for your 3 bedroom flat was 450. Is that 450 Omani Riyals? Is that the average price of an apartment in Oman or is it expensive? Thanks.

    • @allaboutoman6836
      @allaboutoman6836 Před 3 lety

      Most apartments are not furnished. In my experience, furnished apartments tend to have old furniture not in very good condition and you pay extra for the privilege. I would only consider a furnished apartment if I was staying less than a year. Otherwise, I would go for unfurnished. I think because visas are so tightly controlled, people come and go more in Oman (when visa renewals are denied) than other GCC countries. I bought all of my furniture new but there are lots of places to buy good quality used furniture (particularly from Expats leaving). There is a wide variety of price points. My recommended places (from least expensive to most expensive): Pan Emirates, Home Centre, Homes R Us, Ethnic Homes, Marina Homes. This is where I bought 90% of my things. Yes, 450 is Omani Rials. That is on the expensive side. I will be doing a cost of living video to get into more detail but for a 3 bed you can probably find one for 300 - perhaps 250 due to Covid. Because of Covid many Expats have been sent home so landlords have empty properties they are keen to fill.
