I feel like the underconsumption trend can also lead to guilt/self hatred. As someone with mental health issues including autism and adhd. I feel intense guilt for buying myself little treats. A lipstick or a mascara, or even a drink. I wont buy tickets to things or go places, because theres the thought process of âBut do i need itâ I feel like people should just do what makes you happy. Even if that means having 50 mugs in different colours. (I am open to discussion in comments x)
Anyone remember the movement of Zerowaste and Lesswaste that was in the 2019 era. Loved that
Someone needs to talk about Amber Scholl selling all of her clothes in the name of capsule wardrobe and underconsumption and then in the very next video going on a shopping spree to buy more things in overconsumption, like 6 of the same corset in different colors and calling it the basics.
I would love for this trend to be permanent. We need it, the earth needs it, our wallets need it, our mental health needs it.
Really it's contentment core. It's accepting what you can afford and the sliding scale of that based on your means. Be content. I feel so sorry for Gen Z. If they would just hang out IRL with some people older than them, like Gen X, who don't give a 'you know what' about what anyone thinks of them they would see there is another way to live. The internet is destroying this generation.
love this
as an environmental science student perhaps i have fallen victim to this, but with stationery. i have given away a lot to family and friends though, and im thinking of giving a lot of my stuff to charity, and just spend on pens every once in awhile
I feel like if tik tok were to be banned, the western world's co2 emissions would be cut in half.
youre not brat btw xx
People need to get out more
It's funny how there are trends like that when in Latin America we have always lived like this. Starting with the fact that having a stanley cup is difficult because of the price, never having more than one, we drink a soda and reuse the bottle. Shoes are used until they are worn out, pants even though fashions change are used the same ones and if we can we pass them on to a brother or sister to use. I don't know where this culture of overconsumption comes from, but from my point of view or my country, this new trend of underconsumption-core is our way of life since always.
I have a rule that if the item I want hasnât been in my cart for 3 months) I donât buy it. I âemptyâ my cart every 3 months using the 3 month installmen plan where I only buy the stuff I want within my spending budget and remove the rest. The amount of things that come and go in my cart is hilarious đ but I also have an actual emergency fund and savings so Iâll have the last laugh
In my own view of overconsumption, I feel like i may act impulsivly sometimes, i just see something and i have to get it or im sure it will change my life, now that ive grown and am trying to consume less useless things, i can control myself better. It's wild how celebrities and very rich people do not put their life in perspective to realise how much they are wasting and how easily they could positively contribute to a more sustainable lifestyle
This "underconsumption" trend is just like... the normal amount? How fucking rich and out of touch you should be to ACTUALLY believe that overconsumtion is the norm? I don't even come from a poor family and I do realize tha our income is the upper middle class, but first of all how can you not realize, that the amount of plastic packaging used for all those products are harmful? All that is expensive, bad for ecology, useless, and just ultimately stupid. I start to believe that common sense is just painfully uncommon at this point. Make your decorations yourself if you want an aesthetic room, (and no "I'm not talented enough" is NOT an excuse. It's about the effort you're ready to put in. If you don't want to put a few hours into making a jewerly pot or take care of actual plants instead of buying plastic ones, think whether you actually want it then. Because if you wanted all that stuff it wouldn't discourage you that much to spend more time and effort on it) same with clothes and makeup. I use my lipstic as a blush honestly and it's the best thing i've ever done (it's so cute??? people should do it more, it looks so cute and natural when your lips and blush match) (jeez i'm changing the subject here...) Anyway what I meant to say... Is that overconsumption is just weird to me. First of all it doesn't even look normal, secondly I don't get the point of having that much stuff (for what excatly do you need it??? are you making a lipstic army??? starting a cult?? what??????????? there's no way all of them can even suit your color type!)
capitalism is stupid. fight me.
This was the same teenagers blaming the previous generation for consumerism during youth riots for environment
I think the fact that influencers are more influential than they should be, the norm has become overconsumption. Underconsumption is pretty much the norm for everyday people đ
And are we really still trusting peta? After so many controversies they had....everybody needs to do their own research, unfortunately...
See....the thing about this "we can't have this material because the animal is cute or what ever, will lead to more waste, leather for example, is a result of the meat industry, so if anything, we should be pushing companies to resource their leather from factories that already are part of the meat industry... it's shoking to western countries, but a lot of other countries are eating different animals then us, it's part of their culture
I am older than the target audience for this video and just wanted to mention something about the mechanism behind overconsumption which is just the absolute utter ease of getting things. This is very new. Getting things used to require going somewhere when you had a few hours to spare and browsing ,and then getting it home, or waiting for a catalog to come in the mail, calling a person and placing your order on the phone and then waiting a week or so to get the item you ordered. That the process of getting things took significantly more time and effort inherently moderated consumption. Now the fast pace of information and access to the things with online shopping and super quick delivery irons out those speed bumps. And it wasn't that way even when millennials were first becoming adults.
This might be a very odd and unrelated take, but do you think people just got so used to having everything a touch away (eg: no need to wait for tv show to air once a week when you can stream it, or wait until youâre able to got to the public library to get a new piece of information when you have google, or wait til your new favorite song plays on the radio when you have Spotify, waiting to meet someone so you can gossip when you have facetime ) that online shopping became one of our only ordinary ways to experience the excitement of âthis is coming upâ? I had this thought when I read the comment about once something arrives you immediately need to make a different purchase
Regardless of who is responsible for sustainability in fashion, we as consumers need to be prepared to pay more. Super cheap fashion (at retail price) is only possible BECAUSE of exploitative and unsustainable practices. High prices are never a guarantee of good practices, but super low prices? Those are always a guarantee of bad practice. If companies of low cost clothes start producing more sustainably, whether by choice or by force, they'll have to raise prices to make up for that.
Have you made a video on brands that are ethical, sustainable, good quality, beautiful and some affordable options? If not, please do it đđœ
This is just the minimalism/zero waste trend happening again 10 years later
Itâs pronounced Nike, not Nike.
Im so happy i came across your channels and specifically this series. It's like news but a lot more fun and exciting †Also now I'm considering learning how to crochet đ§¶đ
I've always lived borderline on the poverty line. I have plenty of clothes and shoes, because I really love dressing up and creating my own style, but they are all thrifted, Kmart, hand me downs or gifts, I think I own literally 3 shirts that I bought new for more than like NZ$15. All my makeup is drugstore (wet n wild, oxx, essence) except for a few nice things that I buy myself with gift vouchers I get given, and even then that means like, The Body Shop, not Rare Beauty. I wore my last pair of sneakers until there was a hole nearly the size of my palm in the sole and the fabric was chipping away in the instep and my boyfriend insisted on buying me a new pair. I own hundreds of books, because I read a lot and also love gifting them to people and have lots of kids classics from when I was younger, which I get from opshops and Lions book sales and again, with gift cards, and I sort through them every couple years to make sure I'm not lugging dozens of unread books around with me. The most money I've ever spent at once (to this day) is probably like NZ$200 of birthday or Christmas money when I was little and would just buy massive lego sets with it. I would love to have more money and nice things, like a drawer full of makeup that you use more or less regularly I don't see anything wrong with, but the people who have cupboards and cabinets full of stuff (new, branded stuff too) lowkey make me laugh.
brat summer started june 1 and the real ones have already put in so many hours of bratiness and raves. All this advertising seems so late. Like weâve been bumpin that for so long already
Hi! I really enjoy your content - Iâve just noticed overall when watching your vids having to press pause a lot in order to be able to read the tweets or see the TikTok vids you overlay - just wanted to ask if you could leave those on screen longer or enlarge them/go full screen when you edit them in because I think they really enhance what youâre saying âïž
It's so fucking wild how desperate zoomers are for a real personality but all they know is to consume
On August 1, 2024, my first no-buy year ends. Why did I have to start it? First, I come from a very poor family. Second, I worked at a job I hated with all my heart and stayed there for 5 years. So during these 5 years I bought everything: books, clothes, cosmetics, jewelry... Anything cute, beautiful, blah blah blah. So I can say for sure that in my case, excessive consumerism was caused by poverty in my childhood and depression because of a job I didn't like. And so I spent all my money on junk, which is why I never had any money, just like when I was a kid. It was a vicious circle. My no-buy year was the best decision of my life. So on August 1, 2024, I will start my second no-buy year. And the things I've bought before will last me for many more years - clothes, books, and even hair care products.
We had Barbie summer last year it shouldâve been Bratz summer instead /hj
If we don't deal with the root of the problem, aka Capitalism, we will always rely on overconsumption.
My favorite is seeing in the comment sections of these videos people asking where they can buy the specific items đđ like the point went right over you didnât it
it's kinda baffle me that people have to create an umpteenth trend just to be convinced to reduce their consumption. It's like people discorvering common/normal middle class lifestyle through the lense of tiktok AGAIN. Just because something's a bit damaged doesn't mean you have to buy 20 similar items to replace it just as suddenly. It's so strange and disturbing that we need trend to be aware of the impact of our comsuption and our own responsability towards it.
Iâm aware that it is hard to let go of the âoverconsumptionâ mindset for a lot of people (who partake in it). But Iâm telling you, the dopamine rush of getting 1 product that youâve desired for many months is a longer-lived feeling than continuously buying multiple products at once (Iâve realized). So if this motivates anyone else to attempt to be satisfied with this âminimalist?â lifestyle, I strongly encourage you to try this! (I understand that this may not be the easiest thing for everyone, it was even hard for myself for a while to not buy cheap products in bulk).
The ugg boots on Depop look fake, probably why there are so many and they are all new
I donât follow anyone on utube that pushes products and I donât have instagram or tik tok. Young people need to separate wants from needs and have a budget. You will thank me when it comes time to retire.
the fact that i just CANNOT comprehend the tiktoks showed as example of overconsumption... like... guys... what?
I think the consept of a trend is the problem here. If we think of underconsumption or sustainability as a trend, we are doomed to be in a loop of going from one extreme to the other. We consume 'trends' and ideas same way we do our clothes, they are used for a short period of time and then thrown away. Aiming for a more lasting change in the way we consume needs a deeper change in the way we think about things and how we assign value. It is super hard to do, especially in an environment such as tik tok, but i think we should try anyway.
I have to say something that I really think this culture is very much USA driven (I know a lot of people know this but I like to make a point). Iâm from South America and we are by no means free of the influences of the Occidental North American way of life⊠but a lot of the things people that are partaking in this not consuming trend are just normal life. Some of them actually make me laugh because yeah we do wash our Ziploc bags and reuse them every timeâŠ. You do not earn a mesal for doing that youâre just a normal person. And I do believe that the fact that the USA kind of rules TikTok (their content is really pushed towards everyone I fear because of the English language being fairly known by everyone) makes this seem like is everybody but, surprise surprise it is not. And also, I hate the fact that theyâre trying to make it a trend instead of making it like a movement or something because if itâs a trend eventually and very rapidly, it will fade away.
That jumpsuit looks amazing on you without the shirt covering it. Just wear that and the shoes, was so flattering on your body! Outfits are so cute btw! Iâm trying not to buy new clothes and just get inspiration from what I already have!
