    For real, more people should learn to crochet, it's really not that hard to learn and it's very rewarding. (there are way less different techniques and informations to know compared to knitting or sewing) It would also help more people to actually understand how long and physically demanding it is to do full dresses in crochet -_-

      Hey there, I have a question for you about crochet if you don’t mind answering! 😊 My partner tried out knitting this year. He made a scarf and a baby blanket for our nephew, but he hasn’t made anything or even practiced for a little over 3 months. I have tried some light encouragement but don’t want to push. I thought back to when he was knitting those projects and realized he had two main struggles- keeping track of how many knits he’s doing per row (sorry I don’t know the terms!😅) and keeping an even tension and/or gauge (sorry I don’t know if those are two different things or not😅). I haven’t yet asked him out right if these struggles have been holding him back from knitting anything else (I plan to though), but I highly suspect that they are. I had thought about suggesting that he try crochet, but I don’t know if these techniques would be any easier in comparison. So that is my question for you- is keeping track of knits per row and keeping even gauge and/or tension any easier with crochet? If yes, do you have any resources or recommendations for these techniques in crochet and/or general resources/recommendations for someone who is a beginner to crochet? If no, do you have any recommendations or resources that could help with these techniques in knitting? Thanks so much ❤

    I always love your news round up videos Katie, and it turns out I have a lot to chime in on today! First off about “crochet” fast fashion, for context I am a life long hand knitter, I can crochet passibly, but I also worked in the industry as a knit designer, while it is true that there is no machine that can precisely duplicate the hand crochet techniques, the vast majority of commercially available products at the low end of the market being described as “crochet” are actually manufactured on a knitting machine using stitches meant to look like crochet or on a category of warp knitting machines often referred to as “crochet machines” because they can create commercial fabrics that appear crochet like to the general public. This is NOT a defense of fast fashion and absolutely NOT intended to let them off the hook for unfair labor practices, I am sure there are people hand crocheting in abysmal conditions at exploitative wages, but I think it is an important distinction that just because something it marketed as crochet does not mean it was by definition made by hand which is how this is sometimes presented. I did watch the SHEIN crochet tiktok and agree the garment pictured is definitely hand crocheted, however without ordering that garment and receiving one we can’t say for sure that the garment they are shipping is hand crocheted (I have heard of many instances of things being sold on SHEIN with pictures that do not match what is actually shipped). I pulled up Zara since you showed how many crochet items they were selling and can say that just from looking at pictures I estimate at least 70% of the items being marketed as hand crochet were either machine knit or made on a warp knitting machine, the others I couldn’t tell for sure without seeing the garments in person, but there are definitely a few that may well be hand crocheted. And again I absolutely don’t mean this in defense of these companies, just because the fabrics for these garments were made on knitting machines or crochet machines does not mean they were made ethically, but there is a lot of conversation on the internet about how crochet machines do not exist, and factually true it doesn’t always mean products being sold as crochet ARE handmade, they are usually just mislabeled to sell the idea of crochet to a consumer who can’t tell the difference. That said, absolutely everyone learn how to make your own clothes, whether it’s knitting, crochet, or sewing, it is the MOST satisfying thing you can do, I swear.
    My second weigh in today is that I did actually used to work for Nike in product and I will say I was surprised by this news not even the tiniest amount. I can’t say what is going on there now, but when I was there my day to day experience in my work led me to strongly believe the commitment to sustainability was lip service at best. With this new news I would guess if anything, it’s worse now ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    • @katierobinson
      @katierobinson  Před měsícem +2

      i also saw these crochet machines when researching this video!! very interesting what you say and i think it's an important point that not ALL of the fast fashion crochet is definitely knit by hand, but i definitely don't have the skill you have to identify the difference let alone just from pictures! really appreciate your insight into this, thank you for explaining so thoughtfully!!
      can't believe you used to work at nike as well 😭 not surprised at all by what you say, most brands do think of sustainability as a marketing thing rather than a core belief and i would have bet nike was among them!

    After learning how to crochet and how crocheters price their work, the prices of crochet pieces in-store, genuine or not, is pretty baffling. I found a granny square throw blanket for $40 knowing someone probably made 100 or more squares then had to attach each one--it's very time consuming. Buying from crocheters supports people directly rather than large sellers trying to profit off of trends, and ensures you're actually getting something crocheted.

    A bulk of cheap crocheted items are not crochet at all. There are machine made lace types that somewhat resemble crochet, especially from the distance. Some "crocheted" items are actually knitted and even intricate looking knits can be produced with machine.
    But yeah, it is amazing that f.e. Zaras selection of crocheted items have both of these crochet lookalikes - and then some real crochet. It is absolutely true, that the wages need to be ridiculously low for producing these crocheted items in those prices.

    Hi Katie! I actually do not think it’s a cop out that Nike expects all employees to have sustainability goals. As someone who studied management, operations, and manufacturing it’s important that ALL employees have goals that support the company. Not making it someone else’s job. When everyone has goals of reducing waste, saving time, and making the right decisions, lots of waste and problems are solved every step of the way. This ensures overall sustainability instead of making it someone else’s job to track, enforce, and control.

Brands that have become corporations like Nike are too far gone to give a cr*p about sustainability, other than doing a little show to keep consumers happy. However does the average Nike customer care about sustainability? I just want to add the perspective that trying to keep brands in line by seeing if they keep their sustainability promises isn't really going to do much in terms of actual helping the planet and ethical labour, it goes much deeper than this.
