    Thinking of a similar idea for a 64 x 40 shop (2-32 x 40 ft in 2 stages). For your application it looked pretty good. Keep the water out of the OSB and it will last a long time. If you get a chance and this is working out; maybe a good exterior paint over the stain. Might hold up better to the oils and things working on cars, etc. and a lighter color would really brighten things up for working. I have access to crushed concrete and a compactor so thinking of a slab-less floor which would be very similar. Might go with 5/8 OSB for some heavier things; but same principle. You have a very watchable presence, no BS and getting to the point; I watched the whole thing. As soon as I see someone "unboxing" something and a long winded intro I lose interest pretty quick and start scrolling through. You get a thumbs up :)😀

    I watched your 1st video and now this video. I have a question. I used a weed barrier then 4 inches of gravel. Do you think i should do a vapor barrier on top of gravel then osb? OR rake some gravel off and lay the barrier, cover it back up with gravel then osb?

    • @letsmakeitbetter2828
      @letsmakeitbetter2828 Před 10 měsíci

      not to over explain.. but maybe this will help you assess your specific needs. the idea of the vapor barrier is to keep water and moisture from coming up from the dirt and rotting the underside. The gravel allows water from the top somewhere to go and a little bit of air circulation. So... I would not put the osb directly over the moisture barrier, that is likely to trap moisture against the bottom of the osb and not breathe. that said raking gravel off, laying the barrier, and raking it back is a LOT of work... so depending on your climate, location of your structure (is it on a hill where water runs away from it , or at the bottom of a hill where water collects) the weed barrier and gravel will prevent some moisture from coming up...but if its enough has do be your educated guess based on your situation... that said since I made the videos, the prices on ground contact rated pressure treated plywood have come down dramatically. My best guess is that would be fine to use directly over your weed barrier and gravel and will likely last longer than osb in even the most ideal conditions. hope this helps

      @letsmakeitbetter2828 Před 11 měsíci

      hey there... as I understand your goal... if it doesn't double as a garage or shed where you park anything larger than a bicycle. I would put in the little bit of extra work and cash to build a low profile deck/porch/patio. I would frame it with ground contact rated 2x4 and deck it with 5/4 deck boards... It may sound complicated but it is really a task that you and your family could knock out. I would love to do a "ground level" deck video one day but i am sure there are some out there that can steer you right

    D - student Lummox LIKEY! Just spended all my dough on a '67 Jag 420 sedan that's actually nice enough I can't let it sit outside all Winter. I looked up plywood garage floor, and here you are! Gotta see if you have a video on that "garage" thingy you built over it. Where to get one....all that sh!t. I have access to a buncha free sand for a base. Will that work over a barrier? The old-ass early 1800s house I originally grew up in hadda wooden floor in the garage, and that had to have been from the '30s-ish. '70s when we moved. Don't recall anything rotted. I'm a life-ling car guy but never a builder. Maybe the boards in that garage was some kinda fancy cedar??? Lummox not know. But Lummox try!

      Thanks Lummox... and that's a rad car. I stay away from sand because it can hold moisture like ...well.. wet sand. The gravel never wicks and it allows a little airflow underneath. In my experience wood that stays wet rots... wood that can dry lives long enough to meet its demise via other methods... termites hurricanes space aliens... but not rot. Check out my other channel, between the sharks garage for all the misery of building that structure. czcams.com/channels/pW-lAvp9z5Gbv4KKtbg8Ww.html

      Thanks for the comment and also thank you for pointing out some thing I did not specify an either video. Anytime you’re attaching sheet goods plywood, OSB there’s something called a nailing schedule that needs to be referenced. You can Google that and it will show you the spacing of the fasteners on a particular product. Now my method of using this for a shed floor is unorthodox, but it should be fastened at least every foot around the edges so eight screws on each long side for screws on each short side. And in the middle aka “field”. I would recommend at least two rows of four screws each. Well, I got lazy. this is not what I did and I’m just adding screws that spot to the bubble op. There’s no reason you should not be informed on how do the job better than I did. … if you feel like

    • @letsmakeitbetter2828
      @letsmakeitbetter2828 Před rokem

      Hello Cindy, thank you. You still need the vapor barrier because what that’s doing is keeping moisture from wicking up through the ground from underneath. In my opinion, it would still be best to put a layer of gravel on top of that even if it’s relatively thin. That will allow air flow and drainage if it does get wet from the top. Congratulations and good luck with your new building.

  • @johnafagerquist8235

    I am so happy I came across your video! My house came with an enclosed, 12x12, coal/wood shed. First, the floor, err, ground of the shed was about 10 inches below the two doors. Second, it was EXTREMELY uneven and sloped, with a rock and cement foundation which randomly protruded into the space. I heat with wood, so the shed, which is attached to the house, gets a ton of in and out traffic. It was very difficult and taxing to manipulate the wood in there; especially for my wife. I said all that to say this: I covered the floor with pallets, placing bricks under them to make them basically level with the doorways. Then I fastened the pallets to each other, and screwed a layer of 7/16 OSB over them. After 8 years of New England weather, and many cords of wood, in and out, it's holding up very, very well. I am so glad I did not spend/borrow the money to put concrete down. Simply no need.

    • @letsmakeitbetter2828
      @letsmakeitbetter2828 Před rokem

      I think you make two excellent points here with your story- 1. you made a way for the osb to breathe and dry out and nothing is in contact with the dirt. 2. You didn't borrow to get it done. This is a DIY channel for hopefully helping people find a solution that they can afford... will it be the "best" solution? Depends on how you look at it. Objectively a correctly prepped and poured concrete floor is going to be more durable and outlast an osb floor...but for most of us, we need to ask if that the best use of our resources? Its my goal with the channel to show options, and follow up when necessary. Some snake oil fixes are too good to be true. Thousands of years wood structures and wood floors have worked, but they have to be able to breath and they have to be able to dry.

    This is a game changer! Great video. Questions: 1. How long does a propane tank last with your use? 2. How long does it take to heat up the tub? Lets say to 90°-100°F 3. Chemically speaking, do I need a tub with a functioning pump to circulate the water? Or will the chemicals be enough to treat the water without circulation? I anticipate to use my hot tub 1-2x a week. Thank you!

    • @letsmakeitbetter2828
      @letsmakeitbetter2828 Před rokem

      These are good questions… 1. A long time can’t say how long but many hours 2. This is tricky. It’s all about the starting temp and tub capacity make a huge difference. So ballpark 5-10 degrees every 20 min cycle 3. A tub with no pump means a tub with no jets…. But hot tub chemistry is a big deal. One to two times a week shoul be enough to cycle it. My hot tub cycles a few 20 min cycles a day (from factory ) which helps keep the water going and all. Full disclosure- since power is out there and all of the other work and cost. I genuinely believe at this point replacing the heater and going from there might be the best solution after all. Same work. Probably less in parts. And The tubs are so well insulated I don’t think there would be a massive power draw. …just my 2 cents after all of this and having it running for some time Good luck

      @@letsmakeitbetter2828 thanks for answering all my questions. All of this is great to know. If you’re not happy with your pump right now, can I ask why? Which pump are you going to upgrade to? • @letsmakeitbetter2828
      @letsmakeitbetter2828 Před rokem

      @@SomersStudioNashville So both pumps work just fine I’m happy with the whole system. However, I think for the money and the time I could have repaired the original heater in the hot tub. Mine came with a functioning internal pump, and I think that having the system just running, would not be terribly inefficient based on the insulation and it would always sort of be “ready” because all of the other electronics on the hot tub worked. Believe it or not the first hot tub I ever got. I picked up the shelf for free and we ran a pump through a coil through a burn barrel, and it was woodfired. I had a blast making it with my friends, but it took eight hours of maintaining to heat it up so we only used it for very special events but those events were fun and memorable because people came over early. We got a fire going and by the evening we had a ridiculous, hot tub.
