Doing the Stuff of Self-Reliance is about trading theory for action! As an extension of our blog, we'll cover stuff we're doing on our journey to self-reliance and preparedness... student to student style.
We'll cover practical skills (not theory) of self-reliance like functional fitness, outdoor self-reliance, emergency preparedness, blacksmithing, food independence, hunting/fishing, and other stuff of interest.
Thanks for joining us!

Raising the Roof
This was 3 days of setting log rafters with amazing friends and family. Next we will level the rafters as best as possible and begin installing ceiling boards. Stay tuned.

Back to hauling logs for the cabin build. I want to give Melonie (melofthemountains.com) a huge shoutout for all her help in the nasty weather shooting video footage, rigging logs, and doing a great job at dangerous work! Log Walls Going Up!

This was 3 days of stacking logs on the foundation piers with friends and family joining the fun. We got 6.5 rows stacked and pinned down before we ran out of useable logs. Now I'm back to the woods to get more logs. A Heavy Duty Drawknife

Log Wizard vs Spud to Peel Logs
zhlédnutí 9KPřed 2 lety
My overall impression of the Log Wizard is that it gets the job done but is much slower than peeling bark with the spud (if the sap is rising). The problem is that when the sap is not rising in the winter months, the spud is really not an option. A drawknife would work but I'm not in love with the drawknife method... been there done that. Installing a Plywood Floor in the Log Cabin
zhlédnutí 1,6KPřed 3 lety
It's been a while since my last video. This was shot late December 2020. I ripped 1/2 inch plywood into 5 inch wide strips for the flooring. After face-nailing the strips, stain and poly was applied. Thanks for watching, and, as always, Keep Doing the Stuff of Self-Reliance!

Ridge Pole and Rafters Going Up

My biggest fear in this build was safely setting the ridge pole. The plan worked and The Crew got it done! We ran out of lumber before finishing the rafters. Love the Kilt Sir we need more of us Kilted wood folk on youtube
Thank you
With the money you saved on your $15.00 draw knife, you'll be able to buy some tissues and blow your nose. How disrespectful and annoying were you.
This kind of thing should be taught in schools all across the world. Genius! Yet so simple.
7 years late to the party. Better late than never, though. I'd suggest a bowline knot to attach the line to the car. And if possible, some sort of saver to avoid it being crushed on the tight bend in the bumber hole.
My next trip to the woods I’m gonna try that
Pulled stumps with one of those and a come - along winch.🇺🇸👍🙂
I have an old saw I want to restore, thanks for your video.
People do worried about license plates yet if I wanted to I could find it. They worried then they drive everywhere with it exposed!!! Lol
Great work. Whats the point of putting crushed rock underneath the pier, rather than just plopping the large stone on the ground? Thank you
That’s clever and you are a hard working man. If you were to cut some 4 to 6 inch limbs and place them under the log would that make it easier?
Thank youuu, im a girl and it wasn't working. I'm not that strong. Didn't think to do it on the sides
Believe the pronunciation is Fray-NEL, but it's a great video. Working men easily extinguish fire in their palms.
That red shouldered hawk has a lot to say.
Amazing.
This is brilliant! Thanks. I had to move a 2,000kg log around to my sawmill and I have no powered machines. This worked perfectly. (Took us 4 days, but it was at least still doable). Scott from Japan
You just solved the mystery of the pyramids.
if a rope snaps under enough tension it can come flying back at you at around 800 mph, 2x the speed of sound. Do some research and consider what that will do to you. 😬💩
Omg, he fumbled around so much at the beginning. I would not pass his class. ADHD engaged fully when he zoomed in and then zoomed out and kept trying to start the lecture.
I attempted to make some a few years ago, but I wasn't able to finish the process because my parents got sick and I forgot about it. The jars are sitting under my basement bar with the hulls still in them, but they are in vodka. Do you think it will still be good?
Wonderful
Do you have some basic dimensions on this or follow up comments after a couple years of use? What would you do differently. How long is the log and what are the basic dimensions of stuff. Thanks
Whythe heck would you unwind it just back up your truck to loosen the rope
If you attached your rope lower it would be easier.
Трос надо короче в 2 раза
Ingenious! Never seen this before. Thanks for sharing. Cheers! 👍
Scrub past 2mins25secs if you don’t care to see a man cut a log with an axe. Has nothing to do with the video.
Add a few sections of logs to use as rollers under the big log and you've got a complete moving kit for more flat land application too.
Would the radial tension be too great if the lever was farther away from the rope? That looks very unsafe.
Thanks!
Nice video. Handy trick to know. One thing though, thats a Line Hitch Knot, not a constrictor knot
I grew up piss poor in northern Arkansas, and that's how I learned to split wood. My little ass couldn't swing a maul, so I figured out how to bust wood with a double bitted axe.
That's really far out. Great EDC item for a wallet for sure.
Clever
Did he say "starts not smoking"? I think it's pronounced frenel lens BTW.
Can extra salt cure sliced, store bought bacon to be kept without refrigeration.
Nice work
what size is the auger?
I'm here because my vehicle is bogged and im by myself.
I do this as a mover with mattresses (not the foam ones they are too soft and mushy).
I watched this many times, great demonstration!
right on the river too Nice
great to see you again
This is awesome. Thanks!
That 's great. I did not know this smart technique before. Thank you for education. Btw. What kind of rope is that? It sounds like a guitar string on very much tension but it didnt snap. Seems to be good quality.
My thing is with all these videos no one ever shows how they got logs with perfect straight cuts in the first place. The logs have to be cut perfectly to stand straight and split does everyone carry around a chainsaw or some when they go camping to have all this perfectly cut wood to split?? Or do people use hand saws?
I'm afraid the line will snap and whip out my eyeball
Yes excellent idea . Could be used to pull out tree stumps and many other situations 👍💥🛠⚒⛓
I'm am 58 yrs old and have been in the woods or close most of my life in 4x4s starting with mom dad uncles and cousins in a willys army jeep at 3 yrs and Chevy 4x4 at 15 when I got my license. This is the first time I've seen this type of wench but needed one more times than I'll say. Thank you. Keep up the great work.
