Exegetical Analysis of the Quran | Surat al-Baqarah | Verse 34: The Angels do "Sujuud" to Adam
Exegetical Analysis of the Quran | Surat al-Baqarah | Verse 34: The Angels do "Sujuud" to Adam
Praise be to the One true God, ar-Rahman, Lord of all realms of existence. Greetings ladies and gentlemen, and may the Grace of the most High God be forever in your favor. Welcome to our continued exegetical analysis of chapter 2 of the Quran, surat al-Baqarah. In this video, we are going to be discussing verse 34 in the story of the appointment of Man as God’s representative on earth. Verse 34 in this story encapsulates a profound lesson about obedience, humility, submission, as well as the dire consequences of arrogance and disobedience to God’s commandments. It serves as a reminder of the importance of surrendering to God’s commands and the spiritual perils of pride and defiance. This verse not only recounts a pivotal moment in the narrative of creation but also imparts enduring ethical and moral teachings unto Man in his struggles on earth. In the previous couple of videos, we had discussed verses 30 to 33, where Man is eventually appointed as God’s representative on earth, as well as the angels’ concerns about this appointment. The angels’ concerns are said to be due to the fact that they foresaw Man as creating disharmony on earth and shedding blood; whereas they did not have the propensity of committing such acts, and believed themselves to be better suited at upholding the balance that was established at the moment of creation.
And when We said to the angels: “Pay homage to Adam!” - so they paid homage; with the exception of Iblees. He refused and sought self-assertive pride and arrogance, for he was of the ungrateful. [Q2:34]
We understand “sujuud” as the position one assumes when in agreement, obeisance, or compliance with an instruction or requirement. In Chapter 13, Verse 15, the Quran states: “And to God do those in the heavens and the earth perform sujuud - willfully or unwillingly, and so do their shadows in the morning and the evening.” Similarly, in Chapter 16, Verses 49 to 50, it reads: “Have they not looked at what God has created of anything - [how] its shadow sways from the right and the left, - ”sujjadan” to God, while they are in a state of humility? For to God does whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth of creatures do sujuud, and so do the angels, and they do not seek to be arrogant.”
We see in these verses that everything in the heavens and the earth performs sujuud to God, including those within them, willfully or unwillingly, as well as their shadows. The emphasis on shadows is important as it gives a clue to the word’s meaning. When we observe our shadows, they are in complete harmony with the objects casting them. Whether we move or stay still, our shadows follow our exact movements and gestures. This complete compliance and alignment of our shadows to our gestures is what the Quran refers to as being in a state of sujuud. In some cases, this state is exemplified through physical movements or gestures like prostration, bowing, kneeling, saluting, or nodding of the head; in others, it is strictly limited to its inner meaning. When the shadow moves or sways with us from the right and the left, it does so out of sujjadan to God, meaning “in alignment, agreement, or compliance with what God commanded it to do.” Thus, being in sujuud to God implies being in harmony, alignment, or compliance with God’s instructions. So, when God commands the angels to do sujuud to Adam, it implies that the angels were commanded to be in alignment or harmony with Man - by serving Man, looking out for him, and watching over him throughout his earthly journey, providing relief, reassurance, solace, peace, and consolation

    The word sajda must mean submit in verse 4:102, (and in every other verse when you read the context in which the word is used), after they have submitted, (with understanding of course,) to the reading during the salaah, "then let them fall back to let the others forward to hear the reading", how can they fall back when they are prostrating? That is my understanding. Carry on the great work. Peace.

      @@gabiebachmat1811 thats fine if that’s how you choose the read the verse; but for me it is not to be understood as if it is saying “while they are prostrating, let them fall back” rather, it is “when they have prostrated.” Meaning when they have done, i.e. finished the act of prostrating. Similar to chapter 33, verse 53, which has the phrase “when you have eaten, then disperse throughout the land.” Here clearly, you cannot ask the question “how can you disperse throughout the land while you are eating?. The implication of the verse is clearly stating that when you have finished eating, then disperse throughout the land. Similarly, the verse in question states “when they have prostrated, then let them fall back to the rear of you” - meaning when they have finished prostrating, then let them fall back behind you. This simply how language works. No need for semantics in my opinion. Thanks for the comment though. Appreciate it. ❤️

      Walaykum Salam. Thanks for the comment, and what you have requested is a great thing indeed. It’s difficult to pinpoint a translation out there that captures the Arabic to its fullest unfortunately. I unfortunately have not been able to find any. I don’t usually use translations, however I do use the Quran corpus site sometimes on my laptop to see how words are used throughout the Quran, so as to understand them in the best way I can. I would highly recommend an app called quranwithlughat. It’s a very a wonderful and powerful app, as it explains the verses both in meaning (more or less interpretive) and by word by word; which means that you can practically look up every single verse in every chapter and select a word you want to understand. The app provides both the root meanings, as well as how those words were most likely used at the time, and provides several examples as well. It is in both English and Urdu. I highly recommend it to anyone who is serious about the Quran and who wants something easily accessible. I hope that helps. 😊

    • @chillinwithscripture3033
      @chillinwithscripture3033 Před 2 měsíci

      Walaykum salam brother. Thanks for the question , as well as the comment. No, you don’t have to go sleep before performing tahajjud, you can do it before going to sleep, and no it doesn’t have to be in jamat. There is no such thing in the Quran that doing salat in jamat is better than doing it while alone as far as rewarding is concerned. The Quran clearly shows Zachariah making salat alone while he was in the chamber, so there is no must to offer it in jamat. That being said, if you want to offer in jamat, there is clearly nothing wrong with that at all, and it can be very good socially, as it can help build comradery and societal awareness and cohesion, especially if you live in a tight community, however the rewarding of the salat itself in eyes of Allah solely depends on the individual and their devotion to Allah during that salat, and not collectively. So, socially it can be argued that it’s better because it creates cohesion and social awareness, as matters that concern the society can be discussed and evaluated when people meet for the salat, and that way everybody can be informed as to what may concern them, however with Allah, the rewarding of the salat will depend on the individual devotion rather than the collective. Thank you. I hope that answers your question 😊

Yes, it is my understanding that some revelations in the past could have allowed for people to prostrate to other people as a sign of respect, not as a form of worship or servitude. Such as in the case of Adam or in the case of Joseph. But we know that for us, adherents of the Quran, prostration has been dedicated to Allah. Though, I should stress that I understand the meaning of sujud can in fact refer to simply showing obeisance to a particular thing, rather it referring to physically prostrating. With that said, however, the prostration in the case of Joseph seems to be physical due to the addition of the word “kharra” lahu sujjaddan, indicating that there was something physically going on where the collapsed from a standing position to a position of sujuud. As for 53:59, that does not necessarily have to imply a physical prostration. It could simply imply to “be in obeisance to Allah and serve.”

      @@chillinwithscripture3033 ADAM SUJUD This Quranic history is subject to serious manipulation. The manipulation led to Grave veneration, prostrating to other humans they call Peers. liādama > لِآدَمَ - the preposition > lām The manipulation is done by selective application of many meanings of the preposition lām. It is applied in Quran to mean - To, For, Before... The application here is FOR. All prostration belongs to Allah. Physical Prostration and Submission. Anything else is contradiction and Shirk. So, why Allah commands Angels and Jinns to Prostrate TO Allah FOR ADAM / HUMAN? Answer- Allah creates whatever He wishes. He created Human and declared it is His the best of Creations over Angels and Jinns. And He has proven through a test of Adam / Human. It is a prostration to al Musawwir, al Khaliq, al Qadeer, al Rahman. A requirement on Angels and Jinns to accept superiority of Human as a Creation over them. Angels accepted that they are incapable of doing what Adam / Human can do and Prostrated. Iblis (Jinn) refused with an argument that he is created of Fire and he is better then Adam / Human. So, IT IS A TEST OF ANGELS AND JINNS TO ACCEPT SUPERIORITY OF ADAM / HUMAN OVER THEM AND THE TEST IS TO PROSTRATE TO ALLAH - FOR ADAM / HUMAN BEING SUPERIOR OVER THEM AS A CREATION. Be mindful they all prostrate to Allah but here Allah mention FOR ADAM as it is a TEST ON THEM to accept SUPERIORITY of Adam/ Human as a Creation over them. That is why Allah said - FOR ADAM. VERSES- [2:31] And He taught Adam all the names, then presented them to the angels, saying, "Inform Me of the names of these if you are truthful." [2:32] They said, "Glory be to You, WE HAVE NO KNOWLEDGE EXCEPT THAT WHICH YOU HAVE TAUGHT us. You are the Knowledgeable, the Wise." [2:33] He said, "Adam, inform them of their names." So when he informed them of their names, He said, "Did I not tell you that I know the unseen of the universes and the earth and that I know what you reveal and what you were concealing?" [2:34] And when We said to the angels, "Fall prostrate FOR Adam," they fell prostrate, except Satan; he refused, was arrogant and was among the disbelievers. [7:10] We established you in the land, and We provided for you means of livelihood therein; little do you give thanks! [7:11] We created you, then We designed you, then We said to the angels, "Fall prostrate FOR Adam." So they fell prostrate, except Satan; he was not one of the prostrators. [7:12] He said, "What prevented you from prostrating when I commanded you?" HE SAID, "I AM BETTER THAN HIM. You created me from fire and created him from clay." [7:13] He said, "Therefore, descend from it, for you are not to be arrogant in it. So get out; you are among the belittled." [15:26] And We created the human being from clay, formed from altered dark mud. [15:27] And the jinn, We created previously from scorching fire. [15:28] Your Lord said to the angels, "I will create a human being from clay, formed from altered dark mud. [15:29] Once I have fashioned him and BLOWN INTO HIM FROM MY RUH, you shall fall prostrate FOR him." [15:30] So all the angels fell prostrate, every one of them, [15:31] except Iblis. He refused to be with the prostrators. [15:32] He said, "O Iblis, what is the matter with you that you are not among the prostrators?" [15:33] He said, "I am not to prostrate FOR a human being whom You created from clay, formed from altered dark mud." [15:34] He said, "Then get out of it, for you are an outcast. [20:116] When We said to the angels, "Fall prostrate FOR Adam," they fell prostrate, except Iblis; he refused. [20:117] So We said, "O Adam, this is an enemy of you and your wife, so do not let him evict the two of you from Garden [your habitat - which was in Sinseen mountains in Euthopia (chapter 95)] and thus become miserable. [20:118] You are granted never to hunger therein, nor go unclothed. [20:119] And you will neither thirst therein nor suffer excessive heat." [38:71] When your Lord said to the angels, "I will create a human being from clay, 38:72] then once I have fashioned him and blown into him from My Ruh, you shall fall prostrate FOR him," [38:73] the angels fell prostrate, all of them entirely, [38:74] except for Iblis. He acted arrogantly and was one of the disbelievers. [38:75] He said, "O Iblis, what prevented you from prostrating FOR what I created with My hands? Have you acted arrogantly, or are you one of the exalted?" [38:76] He said, "I am better than him; You created me from fire and created him from clay." [38:77] He said, "Then get out of it, for you are an outcast. It is exactly same in verse 12.100. [12:100] He raised his parents upon the throne. They fell prostrate FOR him. He said, "O my father, this is the interpretation of my vision of old. My Lord has made it come true. He has been good to me when He took me out of prison and brought you out of the desert after the devil had driven a wedge between me and my brothers. Indeed, my Lord is Gentle in what He wills. Indeed, He is the Knowledgeable, the Wise. Glory to Allah

    please make dua to Allah to put yaqeen and light of iman in my heart. i had severe waswas attacks that turned my heart very hard, im scared the waswas entered my heart as doubts. I most of the time cant think clearly but I believe in Islam and the 6 pillars of Iman but my heart feels so stiff and hard. I just hope Allah didnt seal it 😔 i am just a stranger but please pray for me. Allah and Islam is the most precious thing for me, I feel like a hypocrite I cant live without Allah and Imaan in my heart 😔 i still pray, read quran, do dhikr but i feel so distant from Allah, my heart has never been in this state. Is there still hope for me? The quran doesnt affect my heart like before, did the waswas take my Faith or „just“ lowered my iman? I dont want to be a hypocrite or a kafir, Please make dua in your nightly ramadan prayers for me. May Allah reward you for it amin

      I don’t think a hypocrite would have the self-awareness to acknowledge that kind of loss, so I doubt you are one. But I will honor your wish inshallah to make dua for you, as I hope you do for me along with yourself. May Allah return that which is precious to you and increase it manifolds. It’s completely normal for one’s Imaan to fluctuate or increase and decrease over time, as it has many triggers and turn offs, but I pray you find those triggers and avoid the turnoffs. 🙏

    • @sub7se7en
      @sub7se7en Před 2 měsíci

      He isn't. This video does a good job debunking AA. His argument is that the Jews claimed Abraham was a Jew and the Christians claimed he was Christian, but Allah is basically saying they have no claim to Abraham because the Torah and Gospel weren't revealed and since the Quran wasn't revealed either at that time it's hypocritical for the Quran to claim he's Muslim. The problem with that is that you do need the Torah to be a Jew and the Gospel to be a Christian, but you do not need the Quran to be a Muslim. What is a Muslim? One who submits his will to Allah. Could people submit their will to Allah before the Quran was revealed? Absolutely. So Abraham could have been a Muslim well before the Quran was revealed but he could not have been a Jew or a Christian. There are no good arguments against Islam. Everything against it has answers and refutations. And the vast majority are that simple to debunk. In order for AA to make an argument against Islam he has to misrepresent it.

    while I do concur with the *_end result_* that the verse has absolutely nothing to do with _"amputating of hands"_ I do not agree with the way you came to that conclusion. At the 0:47 mark you said, _"...my understanding of the Quran is strictly based on the Quran and I do not rely on any outside sources..."_ But then you proceeded to _"analyze the grammar of the modern-day Arabic language!"_ Now, please tell me where in the Quran that teaches you to refer to nouns and verbs and grammar to understand the Quran? There is an easier way to reach the conclusion that the Quran does NOT command the _"amputation of HANDS"_ if you just follow the MEANING OF HANDS as described and defined by the verses of the Quran. For example, 36:71 Do not they see that We [We] created for them from what have made Our hands, cattle, then they [for them] (are the) owners? So, how do you think Allah created everything in the Universes? Did Allah use His HANDS? Okay... now go study the Quran again... but this time forget everything you think you know and refer everything you don't know to the verses of the Quran. The Quran is fully detailed. Each word or _"terminology"_ is fully described and defined within the verses of the Quran. Often times iit right there in the verse itself. In your previous podcast, you assumed that TAQWA is some kind of discipline... where did you get this idea of _"discipline"_ from? Is there the Quranic Arabic equivalent of the English _"discipline"_ anywhere to be found in the Quran? Please quote the surah and verse numbers if you speak the truth. Anyway, to get the general idea what TAQWA means... just go study verse 2:2 2:2 This is _Al-Kitab,_ no doubtful matter or interpolation therein, guidance to those who are *Al-Muttaqun.* So, for the *Al-Muttaqun* where do they find the GUIDANCE? Is it by going hungry in the daytime during the lunar month the latter day Arabs named Ramadan or by RECITING&UNDERSTANDING the QURAN? IS THE GUIDANCE OF ALLAH TO BE FOUND ANYWHERE ELSE AND IN ANYTHING OTHER THAN THE QURAN? Peace to the world.

At around the 3:10 mark, you surmised, _"avoid even listening to it (The Quran) for they were afraid that it might take hold of them _*_without their knowledge!_* What does the Quran say about itself? Is it a Book of Magical spells or Charms or Hypnotics? No... of course not!!! Only the Sunnis/Shiites/Sectarians have been brainwashed into believing such SHIRK non-sense. The Quran says, among other things, that it is a Book of Wisdom. A Book of Guidance. Now, tell me. You seem to be a sane, upright and knowledgeable man. What do you make of this verse: 4:82 Will they not, at least, try to understand this Qur'an? If it had been from anyone but God, they would have found many inconsistencies in it. Do you think such a verse would _"take hold of you WITHOUT YOUR KNOWLEDGE?"_ Is it HUMANLY POSSIBLE to UNDERSTAND anything without you using your AQAL to UNDERSTAND? Forget what you think you know about the modern-day Arabic and go read the Quran without any prejudice. Verily, you will realize that EVERYTHING you think you know about the Quran and Islam as taught to you by the Sunni/Shiite/Sectarian scholars are nothing but Satan-inspired man-invented gobbledygook! peace to the world.
