  • In this video, we are going to cover the discourse of the true social justice activist, namely, the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and how his activism is viewed in the Quran. There is no doubt that the prophet Muhammad (pbuh) campaigned for social justice throughout his entire ministry, from the moment he became a prophet to the moment he died. He had one goal in mind: to ensure that equal justice prevailed in the community to its fullest: but not for self-aggrandization. The Prophet Muhammad campaigned for the rights of the oppressed, such as the orphans, the needy, the poor, the slaves, women, and captives.
The term “Social Justice Activist” has today taken on a pejorative meaning which embodies the meaning of an individual who campaigns for social justice in pursuit of their own personal interests. The term was coined in the 20th century as a neutral or positive term for people who engage in social justice activism: however, during the 21st century, the term changed from primarily being a positive term to an overwhelmingly negative one. The term was associated with the so-called alt-right political movement, and its negative implications gained fame particularly among those of the left, which would eventually come to overshadow its original intended meaning. The term social justice activist in its intended context referred to someone who promotes socially acceptable rights that foster equality for all peoples, regardless of gender, religion, culture, skin color, or nationality. In today’s video, we are going to be discussing someone who embodied the true meaning of a social justice activist, namely the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him.
