3D Printing a Cam Degree Wheel for Dialing in the Custom Camshaft on my 1974 Corolla KE25 Race Car
So after exhausting every other conceivable scenario I finally caved and have decided to try and dial in the camshaft on the KE25 Corolla.
I was avoiding this for a number of reasons - most of which centre around having the engine still in the car, but also because I would like to design a proper adjustable cam gear for the purpose built Turbo engine down the track, and don't fancy committing the time to that right now.
But - this engine will just no longer run so the only conclusion I can come to is that the cam timing is just way off. So rather than pay what would likely be over $250 for the parts I need to dial it all in - I decided to design and 3D print them.
I was pretty confident from the start that the 3D printed camshaft degree wheel (or camshaft timing wheel) itself would work but was a little unsure about the longevity of the 3D printed crank socket, but as you can see they both worked perfectly. It's always satisfying to 3D print or make your own tools in general, and even more so when so many people seem to spend so much of their time telling me that it wont work.
The outcome of it all was somewhat surprising - but seeing all the drama I had getting up to this point it does seem to make sense...
Either way, progress is progress and I'm looking forward to getting some turbos on these corollas.
The KE70 is also moving along at a fast pace, so keep an eye out for that, and let me know what you think of this video.
I'm always torn between how much info I actually put into these, and how much of the finer details people actually want to know / care about. So if there's something you think I've glossed over or you want to know more about let me know in the comments and I'll either reply or include it in an upcoming video. Probably both.
Thanks for watching!

In this video I continue to show my process for completing the design of the battery relocation for the Toyota Corolla Ke70 Drift Car build. In this video I'll go over some of my process for approaching a design problem, and also dealing with a bunch of mistakes I make along the way. As I established in my previous video, when I do the turbo conversion on the KE70 I'm going to need to relocate the battery, and where better than the boot? I've already done a design and got some completed battery mounts manufactured to suit an Optima ...

Alright so it's time to start dialing in the custom cam for the KE25 Corolla, and preparing the next steps for the turbo KE70 Budget build. That's kinda cool, but you can just find TDC with a ratchet extension in the first plug hole, when it goes up to the top and before it goes back down, thats TDC, no fancy gauge needed.

    • @fatlipcollective
      @fatlipcollective Před 25 dny

      That's a way to get close to TDC but not true TDC. Then you introduce compounding error when you attempt to dial in the cam afterwards

    FYI the CS9000 rollmaster kits aren't just as simple as 'move to another hole'. There's numbers around the perimeter next to the teeth that become the new TDC 'dot', corresponding to what new hole you move to. IIRC this gives you 6* of advance/retard for each new hole. I've never moved mine off 0.

    • @fatlipcollective
      @fatlipcollective Před měsícem

      Hey thanks mate appreciate the tip. That's basically what I could determine from looking at it - seems like each hole is 15 degrees and each tooth is 5, so I imagine you move one hole then back 2 teeth (15 - 10 = 5) and gives you 5deg. Appreciate you checking out my content - I remember reading your build thread on rollaclub wayyy back in the day when I first got my ke25

    Only discovered you recently, and the content is great - as a former (and hopefully future) owner of many KExx Corollas I love the KE and K engine stuff. I also spend more time here than on insta or FB...I dig longer and unrefined format. And yeah people love details, context, the struggle and the continuity of following along with a build etc, and I guess that can be harder to convey in short format. For the 70: I'd love to see a backyard budget draw-through setup on the stock 4K.

      True, and to be fair I actually prefer making long format vids, so hopefully this will work. And keep at it! you'll get there eventually. This is more of a "do as I say, not as I do", but you'll find that often getting an 80% solution out there so you can move onto and complete the next thing will bring you more reward than the possibly extra 10-15% you might have been able to improve on your current vid/project.

    A quick way to check if you're one tooth out is put it tdc, pull the tapper cover and rock the crank back and forth passed tdc and either 1 or 4 will be Rocking. Check to makes sure the rockers are Rocking at the same height as you swing back and forth passed tdc on the crank. If you're one tooth out, one rocker will be higher than the other. It's easy to see.

    • @fatlipcollective
      @fatlipcollective Před měsícem

  • @joey66436
    @joey66436 Před měsícem

    Use a dial gauge down a plug hole, mark top dead centre on your crank. Use dial gauge again on a lifter. Compare to cam specs. Usually can't rely on factory settings if using a reground or aftermarket cam (if you are).

    • @fatlipcollective
      @fatlipcollective Před měsícem

      Yep that's my reason for making the adjustable cam gear. It turns out the timing was correct (to suit a factory cam) anyway, but will be dialing this one in now properly with the adj cam gear :)
