Watching them on the box set of "The Two Ronnies" is a strange experience. They are fascinating and odd. They should be better than they are, if that makes sense. They're all good vocalists and they do everything right, but the performances are so lifeless. There is no energy or vivacity. It's all by rote. I get the feeling that the moment a performer shows even the slightest hint of personality or enjoyment, they get kicked out of the group. There is also an odd stiffness to the performances. The frozen expressions and the lack of movement give a weird "prisoner in a cult" feeling to the proceedings. I get the impression that just off camera there is a man with a sniper rifle and any sign of movement will be interpreted as an attempt to escape and the offending singer will be shot. And yet I can't look away.

One of the greatest voices of all time. Flawless technique. Seamless vocals from bottom to top with no fuss. Her vibrato and tone are liquid gold. I can listen to this a million times and still it's like the first time.
