I bicycle commute around 400 miles a month year round in western Oregon. I have the same feelings when riding. It is such a stress reliever!!! When I am at work I think about the commute home! Even though it is the same route, I look forward to the ride home ( of course I enjoy the ride to work also).
Can you replace the hub on that to a quieter one? Actually looking into these.
@@Kingloui10 I like the sound. In theory you could change it, but that’s an added expense I didn’t want to pay.
Epic ride! I've gone up to the lifts once, done the loop to the village many times and its always fantastic to finish. During the climbs though, I always have my doubts though. LOL
I’m going to do it again in the future, but only if the weather is better.
Just don't ride in the rain with it.
Most shoes give you three sizes, european, US and centimeters. I have better luck going from brand to brand using the centimeter sizing. I'm a 43 in Lake, 43.5 in Sidi, 9.5 in Ascis, 10 in Adidas, 10 in Puma. Lake are fantastic, I have the MX237 wide.
Great job! I made it up about halfway and when I got home, I put on a larger cassette!
That's why I brought my Crux. 34-36 instead of my road bike which has 34-28. Ugh.
That was disappointing. I was hoping to see what the ride looked like, or at least a reasonable description of how I can find these places (names I'm not familiar with). A Stava or RideGPS route link would have been cool, too. Spending most of the video pimping a product is why you just lost me as a subscriber.
Oh well. Can't please everyone.
You can't see because the sweat is in your eyes so ditch the helmet and wear a cap. I'm sure you could have paid someone a couple of bucks to take your helmet to the top so you would have it for the descend or just carry it your handlebars. The cap works to channel the sweat off your face. I can't wear a helmet in the summer because I sweat like a water tap.
Great help friend, thanks.
I could endure the climb and the heat; but the biting bugs would have been a dealbreaker for me. Just couldn't handle a distraction like that.
2 weeks later and I still had bites that were itching. It sucked.
That's what they sell bug spay for.
@@charlesmansplaining There was no Rite Aid on My Baldy.
RESPECT!! Thanks for dealing with the steep ascent, heat, and flies to show us suffering in real time! Great video!
Thank you!
🤣🤣🤣 reminded me of my first time riding this 🤘
I’d like to do it when it’s cooler.
That looked like hell!
It was awful but I survived.
Good job finishing! That is a super tuff ride even in perfect conditions.
It sucked but that’s what makes good videos I guess.
@@cyclinginsoutherncalifornia Yes. But you indicated you would do it again in the future. So that is the question that needs an answer. Why?
@@Coloradorider400 I think because under the right conditions, it could probably be an awesome day (weather, no bugs, they close the road to motorists some days, etc)
@@cyclinginsoutherncalifornia I think it's because you are a little nuts. I know because I think I am. The suffering does something for you?
Mt Baldy is a great ride. We went up the dirt road in the end with our MTB's a couple years ago. Beautiful, amazing scenery but very hot indeed. Great videos by the way, thanks!
Thank you very much. I’d like to do it again if it’s cooler.
Didn't realize you were on this ride! It was hot as hell but fun.
Was that a base layer you were wearing during the ride? Must be a special one for heat.
thanks for this review!
No problem!
Enjoy your videos a lot! California is a great place to ride your bike. Greetings from Germany! :)
Thanks for that. You should see the video that just came out. It’s awesome!
There are two holes. One is 50% deeper than the other. When the first divot disappears, your tires are 50% worn out. When both holes (divots) are gone, you tires are done.
Cool.
Hard shell suck… new tires less than 20 miles and have already 4-5 flats in less than a month 🤦♂️… Switching tires asap
What will you switch to?
@@cyclinginsoutherncalifornia Not gonna start a band wagon…?
@@fixed_geartv I have no clue what that means.
@@cyclinginsoutherncalifornia meaning I will not comment on new stuff.. I work in silence
@@fixed_geartv good luck on your tire choice then.
I used Squirt for years, then I tried the OZ way immersive waxing and then I went back to Squirt because I wasn't able to de-grease my new chain properly and that is mandatory for the system to work. I really saw the benefits of immersive waxing so I tried the Silca way of doing it. I am not going back to any other system any time soon this works so nice! I just waxed a new chain and put that chain strip tablet in the pot temperature up to 125c leave it there for 10min bring the temp down to 75c and when it's there you are done and your chain wil never get dirty again, magic stuff. For vacation I use there Super Secret drip on chain wax. It is perfection to me.
This video is years old. I just got the silca stuff. Stay tuned for the video
THAT'S A HORRIBLE IDEA!!
Can't wait til I make it out to Santa Monica from Texas and join yall for a group ride!!!

"It's fun"...Ummm, NO! Do you really wonder why nobody wants to ride it with you? 🤣
It’s how you sell it… problem is it has a reputation.
Another advice: I noticed the cycling socks make a noticeable difference. Very thin Italian socks tend to be more slippery and less secure. I used Shimano ankle socks which have some slightly thicker areas on the heel and front and they provide a noticeable better fit in the shoe than the very thin.
do you rinse off your chain? what does the water do.
I wipe it off with a clean rag then wax it. Easy. No problem.
@@cyclinginsoutherncalifornia so you don't use water?
@@silversolid1885 nope. I do exactly what I showed in the video.
@@cyclinginsoutherncalifornia So you never wash your bike or ride in rain?
@@silversolid1885 yes I wash my bike and occasionally ride in the rain. I thought you were asking about the content in the video. What did you think of the video?
I think for cyclists, the main scenario is you cannot control the zone 2 and it will goes up eventually on zone 3 and 4 on your subconcious ride. So cycling is about more of a pyramidal training rather than the polarized training.
Black on black on black
Thanks, I may try riding beyond Carpinteria State Park.
I can't even spell 11% grade. Good for you! Virtual ride is good for me. lol
I haven't been riding as much, this video is giving me motivation to get out today. Thank you... I'm gonna go do a Grandview & Tuna run 🦃💨👀

...even going down Deer Creek is scary.....don't cross the yellow line going down Westlake.....I assume you came down Protero whis is fast and fun!
Yep! All those downhills get your blood going!!
What does the meaning of "not feeling beat up after a ride" on a carbon fiber bike? Does it apply on aluminum bike?
With some bikes, the way they’re designed, they’re very “stiff.” You feel every bump on the road, every vibration, your ass feels like you’re sitting on bleachers at a hot school football game, etc. That’s aluminum. That’s why almost all aluminum bikes come with carbon forks. Those carbon forks absorb the vibrations better. If you’re on a budget, get an aluminum bike. It’ll have carbon forks anyway. You’ll never notice a difference until you try a carbon bike. Also, geometry of the bike makes a difference and has closed the gap between carbon and aluminum, thus the aluminum bikes now are damn awesome. I had a 1990’s aluminum bike and it was like riding a 2x4, but my current aluminum bikes is world’s apart. It also helps to be beat up at least once in your life so that you can understand the comparisons… ha ha.
@@cyclinginsoutherncalifornia the tire clearance of modern aluminum bikes are wider compared to older rim brakes. Which is you put a 28c or 30c tires to decrease vibrations? Tempting to buy a carbon bike but im not sure if they're really worth the money. I have a full carbon upgraded CAAD13 with 28c tires btw.
@@diegoeleazar9154 you have a great bike already. Yes, I forgot about that… tires make a difference.
@@cyclinginsoutherncalifornia thanks for your advice. I guess I will just keep my money and focus on my training instead. Those new fancy bikes are just eye candy 😅
@@diegoeleazar9154 believe me, I’ve got eyes for candy too…
But then after DC, you still gotta finish off up Yerba!
We did… then Encinal, then Westlake, the Hidden Valley, the Sycamore, the down Potrero. Great day.

Big ol’ fart at 28:05
I been exercise since grade I’m 51 now and still enjoy cycling but no more than 10 miles
I much prefer nice riding tires. Punctures are easy to fix. So what if you change a few tubes a year compared to constant harsh ride
What tires do you use?
Mine are hurting *BAD* right now. (~47 miles today.)
Why?
@@cyclinginsoutherncalifornia not sure, which is why I was looking this matter up. Note that I’m not using clip-ins or special cycling shoes. (This might explain matters.)
@@dennisyoung4631 47 miles on non-stiff shoes? Try cycling shoes. Game changing.
@@cyclinginsoutherncalifornia I’ll try to get some when funds permit. Have to pay in advance for dental work right now.
Great video very helpful but omg the sound :/
What about it?
Try a Chaoyang tyre like the Viper Duro they still use kevler rather than a nylon breaker @ 120TPI and way better value. TPI is not always equal as some manufactures count it differently. Its been well documented that 120 tpi is optimal. Gatorskins use 3x 60tpi clothes to achieve 180tpi so its not a true 180tpi tire . A tire with 1 layer 120tpi would be better/stronger.
Thanks for the tip!
No it’s because they get shoes custom made to the shape of their feet
Just got the MX238. Agree completely, though the gravel version (suede) has a different better tongue. Until they adapt the lasts, we wide footed folks will have to put up with the loose heel in walking. But…there is literally no alternative. Fortunately, the carbon fiber footbed is ridiculously stiff. And there is so much volume in the shoe I can slip in a lift to palate my leg length discrepancy. I agree with the Shimanos, I wore some for years. But the Lake shoes are game changing. Improved power transfer, better comfort and fitment. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! (Ps, their website is very helpful and will lay out in a matrix all the shoes, all the widths and lasts, and CRITICALLY, the widths in mm per size. The MX238 looks to me to be their widest last in the wide size.
