Essential PA System Tuning

If you’re responsible for a PA, you want it to sound good.
You know you should “tune” your PA, but you’re unsure exactly what you’re supposed to do to get these speakers sounding their best.
To get sound to everyone, you need to choose the right speakers. To get even coverage, you need to place your speakers correctly. To get a smooth sound, you need to EQ the speakers. And to make them play well together, you need to balance levels and time align. That might seem like a lot, but I’m going to share a simple-ish framework to get your speakers sounding great.
You’ll, of course, be using your ears, but we’ll cover how to use data to remove any guesswork.

Thank you, Andrew!
You're very welcome
I appreciate the reminder. This has happened to me in one way or another so many times. I have the dn48 16-0 with the X32 and I had suffered through so many shows not being able to get this thing to work. To the point where sound checks were pushing to doors open and cables were being ripped out rerun frantically and in the end it turned out to be a clock sink error caused by the DN 4816 powering up more quickly than the x32. I had reset the X32 I had reset the stage box and I had reset the entire system with the power conditioner but I did not reset the DN 4816 on its own. And I done that so would have gone on and everything would have been fine. I also suffer from must solve the routing issue syndrome. When all I need to do is reset the system and start over. I get locked into having to find what the problem is instead of just starting over. The countless hours of frustratingly trying to sort a routing issue when all that is needed is to reset and start over
Another great video: keeping it simple keeps it clear!
Thanks. That's exactly what I was going for!
rule #1 use your ears not your eyes I see so many people doing things like subs L-R of stage and then wondering why there are power alleys and valleys. speakers are not lights
I agree, but sometimes you have to do LR placement of subs, because of client or artist (don't want subs in center or it's not possible to put subs in center), it depends. It's great video.
It would've been good to get more information about system tuning when you're not using fills. I know you've got other videos that focus more on standard LR systems, so maybe just rename this video to highlight the difference? Great video though!
Very very well done!
Thank you!
This is the best video I’ve seen yet on time alignment!! Cheers from AUSTRALIA 🇦🇺
Aw you're too kind! Cheers!
Hi, thanks for your Video! It really made some things clear and helped me to understand the process :) However, I have a question: Are you doing the same to your Monitors at FOH so the sound you hear when mixing is the approximate sound in front of the Stage?
I think it’s important to mention that there will be inherent latency when using plugins in this manner. Signal is not going to be phase coherent.
Gonna use reaper cause protools hates me 😂
Aw same! Honestly, I just gave up on pro tools. It's not worth the hassle.
This was great mate - thanks a lot. Im a new manager and one of my artists are playing an arena show, this was very helpful
Ahh great to hear! Let me know if there's anything else about the sound world you'd like to know
In terms of the routing (outputs), I assume the Festival console has that locked in on so any showfiles loaded wouldn't affect that?
Yeah they had outputs and certain inputs safed. I let the festival tech load the file anyway so that they can make sure things are as they should be for their stage.
Very interesting !
Wish some third-party companies could release a touchscreen mod kit for these consoles
Gentleman, thanks for the content. There's a possibility to use a channel in the M32 in line, without a preamp? To use with a external Neve 1073? How to best way to use teh mixer with a external preamp like that neve? Thx in advance

How to save it the correct way in a scene with CL editor ?
Excellent thanks
I'm glad sound guys like you exist out in the world somewhere. Usually when people see my pedalbord and the mic request on the input rider, they just roll their eyes and do the bare minimum, even though my setup is carefully chosen to be flexible for any venue and stage type. I've only had someone approach me to dial in the perfect room sound once in over 30 gigs
I'm glad I give you hope. Hopefully you find someone you can work with regularly that gets your setup. Best of luck
greate man
Ha! I play this venue from time to time, and to be fair, I’m not surprised that you’d have to boost that lo-end that much, because the sound has been quite harsh a couple of times. You often work there?
OIP in majorstuen? I'm not there super often but I jump in every now and then to cover for Jon. I think the last time I was there was April. I can only handle so much haha... I'm doing 4 weekends from the end of July into August though. What band are you playing in?
@@OffshoreAudio Oh yes, that is the venue! I’m playing in a band called HitPatrol. Jon is one of the guys that gave us very good sound, but he rarely does sound there anymore, I think. We played OIP in Stavanger, and that PA has subs to match, which frankly I don’t think Majorstuen has. You make really good quality videos, so thanks heaps for that! Would be cool if we bumped into you one time!
To me the most difficult thing is keeping calm among all the chaos
Good content- thanks for posting specific suggestions that many times get ignored. If you’re in a city, you should also check out the local theatrical union - IATSE - that has training and apprentice programs, and an immediate way to get experience. They even came recruiting at a community college in my area that was teaching live audio class.
Would you give me the example how to route using user output for the case of: 1. Output 1-8 - AES50A -> Bus 1-8 2. Output 9 - Local -> Matrix 1 3. Output 10 - Local -> Matrix 2 4. Output 11 - AES50A -> Bus 9 5. Output 12 - AES50A -> Bus 10 6. Output 13 - Local -> Bus 11 7. Output 14 - Local -> Mono Sub 8. Output 15 & 16 - Local -> Main LR
Your CLIMB framework is what would more commonly be referred to as the Dunning-Kruger effect. Very informative!!!
I could be doing it all wrong but I like a slow attack on my kick with a medium release and then pair that with a quick attack on my bass guitar with a release double ish my kick attack. It makes a fat low end kick and I don’t get a bunch of bass guitar string noise. I loved your analogy’s perfect
I reckon If it works it works. I'll give your settings ago and you have try mine and I'm sure we'll both learn something 🙂
Thank you, I’m ready for this gig I’m engineering today
You're very welcome. You've got this!
doing a V/O into a 57 is such a great way of saying your a live sound engineer without saying it (this sounds like a put down or something but i mean it nicely/humorously)
Hahaha yeah I know exactly what you mean. I think my lav mic ran out of battery and a 57 was what I had. It was a bit noisy from what I remember. Probably a reason I didn't do it again heh.
Wow! after all these years, someone is still making videos about these consoles. Thank you thank you thank you! I've been using these consoles for years and there is still so much I don't know about them. Please keep making more! You're a life saver for me. Always know that you're making someone's life better. I won't forget this!
Aw this is such a nice comment. Really hearing this makes my day. These consoles are a bit of a maze. I'm so glad it's been useful.
I am using a behringer x18 connected to a mini pc running dante via. Including an optional touchscreen I am still under 1000€ that is great for that many ports connected to dante.
is there any rule where to put the foh
Option 1 would be 2 thirds of the way down the room in the centre of the main PA. if you can't get centre then go directly in front of one of the speakers and just make sure the pay is symmetrical. Though in all honestly it's fairly rare to find an optimal foh position and I almost always just walk the room a lot
we call this video: POWER CYCLE.
Thank you!
You're welcome!
can you do this set up with QU16?
I have been using the Xvive for over two years. It worked so well I talked my guitar and bass players into using them as well. No issues at all. No wedges, no guitar amps, no issues.
Did you ask about what firmware vers their cl5 was running? One of my big nightmares is coming in to a show where I NEED my prepped showfile to work and it doesn't work. Also, did the showfile include rough monitor mixes, or was that thrown together by their monitor guy on the spot?
I’m encouraging every member of every band I work with to buy IEMs (wired or not) and bring their tablets, and recommend to install the app for mixing their own monitors. Connect them to the wifi and they can build their own mixes as I run my line checks, and then tweak them as they run a verse and chorus while I get the FoH mix together. It actually helps, for instance, to show that guitarist how one of his pedals is way above/below everything else, and they can do the work themselves to not shock their band mates or audience when they engage it. Another Important aspect of IEMs is ambience - to pop the bubbles they’ve created for themselves. I find that they either love to hear the band/stage sound with a bit of audience/room interaction and play better, and want it exclusively/predominantly, or they find it completely distracting/disorienting. One thing I’m starting to experiment with is input delays on channels- I’m finding very small amounts make FoH tighter, smoother and quieter, and they don’t fight with the leakage into their ears around their IEMs. It also helps with phase between (for example) the in/out bass drum mics and DI/mic lines of the bass…and I’m talking less than 1ms, under 48samples (at 48k). But not on everything. Nudging something to be a hair of a second “out” has helped make feedback notches more effective as well, as the room warms up/the stage cools down outdoors in the evening/over the course of the show, especially in odd/bad acoustical conditions. The key takeaways of this video - give the sound person the time to do their job well before the show so the band/performers can just focus on performing, and allow them the control to do what they need before the audience shows up.
Well if I'm on an X32 again I'll look this up. Doesn't help that diff console firmware versions, iPad and laptop software patching screens are all different.
Interesting video! What's your experience regarding outdoor vs indoor venues? With festivals, my main concern would be that if I mix at the same level I'd mix at indoors, it would be far too loud in the front
Thanks! When At a festival or larger event I'm going to trust that the system tech/pa installer has ensured even coverage from front to back within a reasonable tolerance. I'm mixing so that it sounds good where I am, and trusting then to make it sound good everywhere. On smaller shows then I'll walk the venue and be aware of speaker coverage and you're the environment changes the listening experienc. Like if it's a sold out basement then I know I just won't get the high end at the back, so I'll accept that and won't you chasing it. Hope that makes sense.
