Beethoven vs. Hummel - Showdown at Vienna
The two foremost pianists of the late 18th century were none other than Beethoven and Hummel, both of whom made their names in Vienna, then the capital of the classical music scene. Beethoven, who had famously demolished other well-known virtuosi (such as Gelinek and Steibelt), was equaled only by Hummel, who approached the keys with a more old-school temperament harkening back to Mozart, his teacher.
This is a compilation of keyboard solos each of them wrote which they may have used in an imagined contest taking place in a Viennese gathering.

Les lions de Paris - Virtuoso Masters of the Early Romantic
zhlédnutí 92Před 7 hodinami
The 1830's-40's marked the prime of the piano as a concert instrument in Europe. Although only Chopin and Liszt truly endured in their legacy out of the premier virtuosi that dominated this era, several other names generally forgotten by the public today drew crowd frenzies with their piano acrobatics, stage presence, and public image. Often, variations and paraphrases on popular operas made a ...

The best of Adolf von Henselt - Reclusive Romantic

Yet another forgotten legend of the romantic era was German composer Adolph von Henselt (1814-1889). His music is especially dark in tone and thick in texture, somewhat like an early Brahms. It is said he had a large influence on the later Russian composers. Rachmaninoff held him in high regard. "Find out the secret of Henselt's hands," Franz Liszt said, describing his mastery of legato as the ...

Those who know about the composer Sigismond Thalberg often encounter him only as a rival of Liszt in a music history textbook. However, this only begins to scratch the surface of this neglected master. It is true that, in his day, he was one of the very few to rival the reputation of Liszt - yet there is much more to be found in this man's work than that fact. Like with Alkan, interest in his w...

Chopin vs. Liszt - Duel of the Century (Imagined Contest)

Chopin and Liszt are undoubtedly the icons of piano history, and their relationship with each other was a complex mixture of friendship, rivalry, and mutual admiration. This is my attempt to simulate an imagined "piano duel" between the two had they decided to undertake this common 19th-century musical endeavour. Liszt had many rivals - Thalberg, Alkan, Dreyshock, being some of his toughest - b...

Fede: Cziffra and Arrau are completely different pianists. Arrau had not the iper-virtuosistic thecnique of Cziffra and Cziffra had not the iper singing sound of Arrau... this is ovbious..... so is unpossible a comparison. You can compare e.g. Cziffra and Clidat or Arrau and Bolet ......

ABM played the second-rated piano concertos like Mozart 13 Haydn G Major Liszt no 1! ABM never played the Best piano concertos like Mozart 24 Brahms 1-2 Chopin 1-2 Prokofiev 1-3 Rachmaninov 1-3 Saint-Saens no 2 Tchaikovsky no 1 JS Bach 1052 and so on! This duel ABM vs Horowitz is wrong because they are not the greatest! More colorful beautiful piano sound than Horowitz=Wilhelm Kempff Emil Gilels Radu Lupu Artur Rubinstein Vladimir Ashkenazy Grigory Sokolov! More genius than Horowitz and ABM=Sviatoslav Richter Solomon Cutner Grigory Sokolov Maurizio Pollini Stanislav Bunin! More powerful louder than Horowitz and ABM=Mikhail Pletnev(Prokofiev piano concerto no 1 by Pletnev!) The Second Loudest was Lazar Berman! The 3rd Loudest was Erwin Nyiregyhazi!

Yuja's 'machine gun' like application to the keys seems beyond human capabilities but whenever she applies the technique it surely separates her from all others who have played the instrument. There have been many 'greats' but there will always be only one Yuja, for she does what no one else can do with the same speed and intensity.

A story the great Horowitz called Tatum up as he loved him and said I’ve just written out some variations on Tea for Two as a showpiece do you want to hear them and Tatum said yeah. Horowitz played these apparently impossibly difficult variations and Tatum said great, amazing would you like me to play Tea for Two now. He then sat and played until Horowitz stopped him and said oh my god when did you do this and Tatum said ‘just now’.
