I paint my bamboo trunks from the bottom of the page to the top
smart choice as it makes more sense for the bottom on the trunk to be darker than the top. thanks for sharing your method and for watching and commenting!

This is beautiful work! I am new and struggling with loading my brush correctly. I start the stroke with too much ink and run out of ink before I finish. Any thoughts?
Work more decisively. When you linger too long on the stroke the moisture in the brush will flow into the paper. Move with your arm or full body through the stroke faster and more decisively and this should solve your problem.

I would also love to see more calligraphy demos. As an adult it is hard to find somewhere to learn Chinese outside of a university. Where I live in particular. I don't want to start off learning Pinyin! I want to start with Mandarin and everything I have found says it's Mandarin but it's not! It's simplified Chinese! I wanted to learn it to better understand the Chinese costume dramas I love AND of course the painting style I started learning because of them! I have found books to teach Mandarin and reading it is easy for me (is that weird? That reading Chinese was super easy for me? It's just like memorizing pictures to me so it was super easy to pick up). But the books don't show the characters actually being written so I haven't really tried. They tell you the order that they are drawn in, like horizontal go first before verticals and all that, but it's not the same as seeing it done!

I just bought the Black Xuan paper. I cut several pieces from the sheets. Now i'm wondering which is the correct side of paper to paint on.
Usually people pick the smoothest side. If you can't tell which side is the smoothest then it doesn't matter. Either side will be fine

Why is my ink getting smudged on Chinese paper?
This could be due to a number of factors and it also is a little unclear about what you mean by smudged. Do you mean that when you rub the ink, it smudges or do you mean that after you apply the stroke the stroke expands in a way that is not desirable.
