Why Your Brain Should Always Lead the Way - WITH HORSES!! - Flute Tube Note
The more, different ways musicians use to learn and memorize our music, the better. We all learn using slightly different methods. We rely, to different extents, on muscle memory, aural feedback, visual memory, and other means, depending on our aptitudes and backgrounds.
BUT!!!
-----------------Your brain should ALWAYS lead the way!!
Just remember the horse analogy!
During live lessons, I most often give the advice in this video to students as they play their scales. It is SO TEMPTING for music students to search their way through scales by ear, or using muscle memory. I can tell you that my students whose scales are in by far the best shape are those who let their brains lead: what is the key signature? How is this scale formed (intervals, patterns etc)? Is this specific note spelled as F-sharp, or G-flat? Or G, or F-double sharp? It most certainly matters! Try your best NEVER to guess your way, or lead with your ears, through a scale - or anything else. Lead with your brain!

Thanks for the nice comment! Sometimes people like to do exercises on piano to reinforce "curling" finger positions rather than locked joints... if you have piano background, something like Hanon #1 and really focusing on rounded pinkies might help.... Good luck with your flute!

Hiya i see a lot of videos for beginners about single tonguing but as an intermediate player im looking for a way to improve my single tonguing for those fast passages that dont require double tonguing but are difficult to get clear articulation on. I was wondering if you have any advice for this.

Thanks for the comment! It would be a great video idea to talk about fast single tonguing. I'm going to put that on my list! In the meantime, I do have a full-length video on getting the best single tongue placement, etc that you can. Thanks so much. The minor scales in EJ4 have bothered me for awhile. Finally I can get the whole clear picture about the minor scales in EJ4. My notes for the reference in the future: 1. Minor scales are based on melodic scale. 2. Three harmonic minors are strategically used on three parts to emphasize or reinforce new tonic. (transition, 1st descending, last descending) 3. Two pull-downs on melodic ascending 4. One pull-up on melodic descending

I also find myself gripping the flute too tightly------( Tension is real and a beast!👀 ). I do play the 🎹 already . So my little pinky finger is not a total lightweight. I'm trying to be aware of how I am holding it (the flute) and to avoid putting unnecessary force on the instrument, but it is really hard to keep these important factors front-and-center. 😩.
