Maybe I missed something, but how are spousal and survivor benefits affected if the spouse or survivor worked enough years to have their own fully funded Social Security benefits? Can one or both get Spousal benefits from the other? Can the Survivor get additional benefits from the deceased spouse account? My monthly check is about $740 more than hers after all deductions and taxes.

If you are smart you will go with original Medicare with a supplemental. Those who chose a Medicare advantage will regret the advantage plans unless they die soon after 65 in an accident and die at the time of the accident. The Advantage Programs fight to keep you from using the promised coverage. Do your homework when the time comes to decide on Original or Advantage. As the spouse of a hospital CEO I hear stories from both doctors and administrators of patients actually dying while the Advantage Plans are denying the life saving (read expensive) procedures. This is for real. Do your homework before picking Medicare Advantage over Medicare. If you go Advantage anyway I hope, for your sake you don’t live long enough to regret your choice.

a couple things... im in a Medicare Advantage plan with Blue Cross/Shield of Michigan. ive had zero problems here in Michigan where i live. they paid everything so far including radiation treatments and prescriptions for prostate cancer treatment. Blue Cross is very well accepted and respected in the state of Michigan. i get additional benefits for things like gym membership which i use every day. additional benefits for vision and dental are very useful to me as well. many believe new changes coming to Medicare will encourage more movement to advantage plans. 90% of providers here in Michigan are in-network providers to Blue Cross/Shield of Michigan. my co-pays have been very low and coverage details are very transparent. people who criticize advantage plans certainly have never participated in Blue Cross/Shield of Michigan

My husband and I were fortunate enough to be able to pay off our mortgage early. We were both still working, and took the payment amount that we had been using to pay off our mortgage faster and we put it straight into investments. We were able to retire early because of almost 7 years of putting away what would have been our mortgage payment as well as maxing out our 401K/403B plans. Thankfully we were taught by both of our parents the value of living within our means. Thank you for your advice. I know it will help people. we are interested in investments that could set me up for retirement , I mean I've heard of people that netted hundreds of thousands during these crash, I listened to someone on a podcast who earned over $650K in less than a year, what's the strategy behind such returns?

are supplemental plans private insurance coverage? im hearing new changes to Medicare will require people to be in advantage plans. is that true?

I started my LTC insurance when very young. But now that I am retired and might actually need it, the costs are so high as to be unaffordable, even for folks that have fairly healthy retirement portfolios. If you think Supplemental plans are expensive- just try paying LTC premiums once you near retirement. The company that we have faced several huge class action lawsuits. We ended up downgrading our policies to something actually affordable and just hope everything will work out. I don't know what is worse... LTC insurance companies or Medicare Advantage companies.

My father-in-law recently broke his hip. He was in a skilled facility for rehab after surgery. After several weeks of rehab we were given his last day of coverage for the skilled care, rehab and advised of our right to appeal. Which we did and prevailed giving him a couple more weeks of therapy. My question is , Is that same appeal process available to an Advantage plan?

NO advantage plan for me. That's like living under dictatorship !
