Here's a video that I wanted to make already for a while: ESQ-1 and the Hidden Waves. In the video I show you some of the Hidden Waves and how you could use them in making sounds and how those sound in short sequences. I mention "Patch Wav74" .... I guess that's how I called it. Originally this Patch is called "Wav75" because it addresses 75 waveforms in the ESQ-1. My bad. ;-) Here are the link...
ENSONIQ EPS-16 PLUS - Soundscapes Method 2
zhlédnutí 9KPřed 5 lety
Method 1 for creating evolving soundscapes involved 4 layers and volume modulation to 'morph' between the 4 different sounds. Method 2 uses the Transwave function and an envelope to do this. This results in having more polyphonic voices available to play the sound. Enjoy!
ENSONIQ EPS 16 Plus Creating Evolving Soundscapes

The Ensoniq Mirage Series 4 - Multi Sampling and Mix Mode
zhlédnutí 4,2KPřed 6 lety
In this tutorial we take a look at multi sampling and creating a 2 Layer sound as well as how you can create a 2 Layer sound when there is only 1 wavesample present in the Mirage.
The Ensoniq Mirage Series 3 - Programs & Chorus Mode
zhlédnutí 3KPřed 6 lety
In this video we look at how to fatten up the sound. I think the first thing everyone does with a multiple oscillator synth is to detune the oscillators. Also we look at using the 4 Program Presets that you can make in each Sample Bank (Lower and Upper).
The Ensoniq Mirage Series 2 - Sampling and Looping
zhlédnutí 7KPřed 6 lety
In this Ensoniq Mirage Tutorial I am showing an essential principle for working with the Mirage: How to fit the wavesample perfectly into the Mirage memory. Totaltwit also explained it in a video here on CZcams. Go check that out as well!
The Ensoniq Mirage Series 1 - Introduction / Sample Pages
zhlédnutí 2,1KPřed 6 lety
In this first video in The Mirage Series I tried to explain how the Mirage memory works. It uses 16 x 16 = 256 sample pages each of 256 samples in length. 256 pages x 256 samples in each bank is 65536 samples per bank (lower/upper) which equals 64kb. Stay tuned...in part 2 we will start sampling and use the trick to get mostly perfect loops for sustained sounds.
Ensoniq EPS-16 Plus Synthesis - Wave Manipulation
zhlédnutí 1,9KPřed 7 lety
By using the features in the CMD LFO menu you can shape/manipulate your Waveforms or Wavesamples. In this tutorial I am using an internally generated Sine wave as the starting point. You can you these functions on any sampme of course. Play with it and enjoy!
Ensoniq EPS-16 Plus Synthesis - Internal Noise Generator
zhlédnutí 965Před 7 lety
When you create the square wave and then use the SYNTHESIZED LOOP function on it you will get some useful noise. Use this to create drums or add it to some other waveforms just as an extra toping.
Ensoniq EPS-16 Plus - Entry Level Transwave Synthesis
zhlédnutí 5KPřed 7 lety
In this video you will learn how to reverse a wavesample, how to resample it with the effects and turn tbe resampled wavesample into a smooth Transwave. All of this is done inside the box without any external sampling or sample loading.

Great stuff my friend!! Thank you.
This is awesome. One of the more interesting old digital synths.
Is it possible you point me in the direction of the soundprocess OS? .HFE format if possible. Thanks in advance
just thinking back, toggling btw the upper and lower banks on the old Mirage sampler seems those in between presets weren't really labeled on the floppy disks. They were like the "leftover" sounds of sampling, Transwave may have been an fruitful accident. akin to granular. Still it's cryptic programming..
This is the secret synth Drexciya used in many of their projects. Very electro. Even drum sounds sound great.
I hear the pedigree of the Fizmo here. Never knew about the TS-10, but I had a Fizmo for a few years, it was very spacey and far-out, I see from here that it's just in the DNA.
For those interested in really hearing the 2nd Gen D-Series synths shine, throw an external EQ biased towards the low-end + decent external effects into the audio chain - What you end up with is a surprisingly powerful budget D-50 that still can be used today, nearly 40 years later...
i follow your example excatly and my ts-12 can get as far as launching the first sample in a hyperwave and then won't play the sequence
sorted almost previous own left synth set to weird key board range but keyzone dosn't adjust it i can only get hyperwaves in the top octaves any idea's??
sorted good old soft reset if u have anyideas what cause thiss let me know
@@percussiveelements470 Good to read that you got it sorted. I have no idea except for maybe you were editing the Sound in a Preset (collection of 3 Sounds) and this particular Sound was set to a certain keyrange? Anyway....sorted! Have fun!
@@RoshiAi i edited the key range didn't fix problem but a good ol reset sorted it no issues since
This is a great series
This is a lovely & inspiring tutorial Robin, thankyou.I have watched it & your other Ensoniq demoes many times. I have a question for you or any other TS10/12 owners if thats ok? I recently bought a TS10 & I cant get patches into it via midi/ Sys-Ex. I use SysEx Librarian & have used it for years without issue, but no matter what I do I cant load my patches into the TS10. I have backed up my patches several times, but can not load them back into the TS10. Am I missing something? The manual says that only Sys-ex needs to be set to on in the midi settings in order for the TS10 to receive system exclusive data ( patches.) The midi in port is working fine with note in from other keyboards.I would be grateful for any advice, thanks.
amazing!
Amazing stuff Just picked up an asr10 rack and an eps-m rack Would it work with the eps classic ? Imagine adding a Tascam 246 to your setup and have each out going to its channel on the 4 track and pitching down etc omg
Thanks! It won't work on the classic because it does not have the Transwave function. It will work on the ASR-10 and the ASR-10 can do internal recordings of your playing and of sequences (so you won't need that Tascam). Pitching down....great idea! ❤
Woah! I didn't even know this was a thing! I bought the Ensoniq Mirage when it first came out in 1984, and still have it, but it no longer loads my Diskettes. I'll have to look into this Soundprocess OS.
Same for me. I am going through the process of upgrading my DSK8 with a floppy disk emulator (HxC Gotek)
Hello, thank you for this. Am a bit confused on how this is working. MIDI isn’t sending audio so how is the audio data getting into the sampler? Or where is the midi in the sampler triggering audio from I guess? Without sampling through the ins of the asr and using the outs aren’t you also losing its sonic signature?
24 yrs with an EPS16+ and I just learned something new! Killer way to stretch out the sound. Thanks a lot for the vid. You should sell individual samples for 5 bucks, I'd buy this one! Cheers...
Thank you for these fine help-full video's I also enjoy your playing. Regards Geert
Hey Geert, bedankt voor je bericht en volgens mij wonen we echt maar 24 minuten bij elkaar vandaan...or maybe I'm wrong. 😊
Amazing textures. I got tired of the new cold, sterile and glassy synths and finally got an EPS. This is the reason why.
Hi Ray, thanks. I hear you. I have not had much time with the EPS-16 Plus in the past few years and I am now getting back into it because of a live performance next year. This sampler keeps amazing me and I want to create some new textures with it as a basis for tracks. Thanks for watching, really cool you bought one and feel free to ask me if you have any questions.
Best video ever
I've been watching your TS-12 videos and I didn't know you had an ESQ -1! (I really need to go through all of your videos). Thanks so much for doing this!! I love my TS-12 and ESQ-1!!!
What else Ensoniq do you have?
@@RoshiAi At the moment I have a TS-12 and an ESQ-1. I did have a Mirage track unit but I sold it because it was difficult to use. I'm wishing I had bought an SQ8O when I bought these Synths!
This is one of the best ASR 10 video-tutorial i have seen in my life. I used my ASR 10 as a workstation in the 90ties and loved the machine. I always thought that i knowed the machine inside out, but your video proofed that i was sooo wrong. It really shows off, that the ASR 10 is way more than just a simple sampler. Ensoniq was a amazing brand, so much ahead in time vs. other brands.
hello Im working on mac do you knowa free program doing the same on osx ? thx
Please! show me how to do new pattern beat and record it, i read manual but not understand, Rec mode
I had one of these. Only synth I ever had that would overheat and shut down. The vaunted poly aftertouch required too hard a key press so I could never use it. I also had an SQ1 which had better transwaves but I traded it for the TS. I regretted it. 16 step hyperwave implementation was much inferior to Korg wave sequencing. I actually took home 2 TS 10s, had to return the first because the ESP chip was defective. Ensoniq went out of business for a reason.
This is inspiring. How did you transfer it to the EPS once you had created the file? Simply sample it in, or via MIDI transfer? Thank you.
Hey Kelvin. I used presets from some of the Arturia V-Collection synths. I 'sampled' or 'did a 2 second mix-down' of them in my DAW (Cubase). I opened al the files in Audacity and lined them up in different tracks. Then I exported that to a WAV file. I used Samplewrench to transfer it over MIDI to the EPS-16 Plus .... during breakfast (it takes about 15 minutes).
@@RoshiAi Do you think transfer via MIDI is critical, to get an exact file length match? Or, would you consider sampling it in to get a very close replica a decent option? I did essentially what you said with decent results, but sampled the file into my ASR. I realize this does slightly change the file length and wonder how critical that is for transwaves.
@@KelvinK_GrassRootsRecords It might work if you get the sample start right. The ASR-10 is more flexible with the use of transwaves than the EPS-16 Plus so you might get nice results anyway. If it sounds good to you then it is good.
@@RoshiAi I ended up using Wavelab to MIDI dump to the ASR10. Thanks again for your help.
The hyperwaves that are basically Ensoniq's version of Korg Wavestation wave sequencing sound absolutely amazing. What a shame that they couldn't be synced via midi clock unlike the Wavestation, unless Ensoniq added this capability in a newer software update? Please correct me if I'm wrong? Keep up the great work.
What OS Version are you using please ?? When i follow your tutorial, my screen doesn't always say the same thing... Thanks for any help.... I'm using OS V1.30
Wow! Now this is what I am interested in! Using these synths for unusual and alien type sounds. Great job! Awesome use of the esq-1. The best use of this synth I’ve seen so far. Really inspired by this video, thank you!

heard the new ESP16 plugin ?? it's amazing and sounds just as good - probably better 🤣🤣😂😂 and it doesn't overheat 🙃
No, I have not. Please tell me more about it! 😊
Shweet! My friend found one of these left for free outside a house -- I'll have to let him know about this
They should've included stuff like this in the presets. Probably would've been the best selling synths of the early 90's.
Spectacular! Robin you such a beautiful artist. I used to be such a fan of the Korg Wavestation and never dreamed my keyboard could sound like it. Amazing work you do. I’m so glad I picked EPS 16plus to go all in on back in the 90’s. It’s still being discovered.
OUTSTANDING video, thank you. I'm contemplating spending $ on a TS-12 near me, shouldn't be buying stuff right now but I love deep and old digital synths / workstations and this really looks amazing. I did briefly play one years ago and was very surprised by how modern it sounded at the time. I think you've made my mind up anyway. Have been reading the PDF manual over too, what an excellent book. We've really lost the ability to make good manuals for products these days, only good one I've seen is for the little Arturia Microfreak. Anyway it's a pity the TS-12 don't have poly aftertouch but if I can fix my ESQ-1 I can't midi them together. Main disappointment for me looking at the TS manual is the lack of resonance on the filters. Even Bob Yannes' SID chip in the C64 had multimode resonant filters. Have you found that limiting at all? I'd enjoy making a sound from a normal waveform and a pre-processed resonant version of that waveform and with the complex architecture of the of the TS I could no doubt cross fade between the resonant and non resonant versions with the modwheel or channel aftertouch :) Anyway thanks for the effort on this video, the folks over at Ensoniq would be pleased if they were still there :)
Hi RP?! Thanks. The earlier units by Ensoniq (Mirage, ESQ-1 and SQ-80) had a Filter with Resonance. Anything after that does not....except for their last unit....the Fizmo, that one did have a resonant filter. I think Ensoniq missed out on something but they did put a resonant filter in the TS effects though...but yeah...it's an effect. Also be aware that the Sample Playback Engine and the Synth Engine are two separate things in the TS. Sample Program editing therefor is limited.
Watching this again, it makes a lot more sense now I've used the instrument for more than a few hours, and your tips with copy to create an initialised sound were helpful :)@@RoshiAi
great thanks robin ... I've learnt something today
Wow, this is rad! I don't own the original machine, but this feels almost like you've unlocked an industrial-themed hidden-mission in the side quests of a beloved game. I couldn't come up with better sounds for a cyperpunk nightmare.
Hi! With this wonderful synthesizer, the Swedish super duo of ROXETTE, created the legendary song "The Look", N°1 in 32 countries in the world, (Record!!..) including USA, and ITALY!!! The sound of the song "The Look" is truly something exceptional, the atmosphere they have managed to create is truly Incredible, even listening to it today one is left speechless!!!
Why piss away Billions of dollars on going to Mars when one can just close their eyes & listen to this. Terrifyingly beautiful. Sell these patches for music therapy. We could all use it. Thanks for giving us this 👍
The “B-Roll” tracks for the video are awesome and very infectious, as always. Any intel if these are or can be found on a similar way on the SQ-80?
Awesome video! Love the tricks on the evolving sound section. Great atmospherics
I have two ts12s, my best friend for writing, and a back up. I love the ts10,12.
Very cool demo of this - I've had two ESQ's and now a SQ80. It was my first 'real' synth and I have spent an insane amount of time programming it - without a doubt, the most intuitive, flexible, fat and feature-rich synth from that era. Cmon, who else offered 3 oscillators and a sequencer back then! Those waves are wacky, I will have to let my buddy know who I gave my ESQ to! (Still in the family!). Thanks for the clear demo of the hidden waves.
Hi.. i want to make arpeggio on Ts10, like " Hungry like the wolf" Duran Duran song, it is possible to recreate it on hyperwave form? Thx
Possibly yes...but it would be easier to use the internal sequencer for that.
In 1990 I spent whole nights doing these things beautiful video beautiful memories
Quiero ver el tutorial en espańol
Tough!
I love that TS10-MEGAWAVE, very Korg Wavestation like!
I’m wondering if any of this stuff is possible on the EPS classic…seems like mixing and blending waves for soundscapes and stuff might not be as easy on the EPS classic vs other Ensoniq pieces including the Mirage
I finally figured it out!!!! This tutorial is amazing. Still haven’t gotten the timing right but wow this is really incredible
You really have a magic hand, my friend, that makes this synth shine.
