  • Here's a video that I wanted to make already for a while: ESQ-1 and the Hidden Waves.
In the video I show you some of the Hidden Waves and how you could use them in making sounds and how those sound in short sequences.
I mention "Patch Wav74" .... I guess that's how I called it. Originally this Patch is called "Wav75" because it addresses 75 waveforms in the ESQ-1. My bad. ;-)
Here are the links that I mention in the video:

    Hi!
With this wonderful synthesizer, the Swedish super duo of ROXETTE, created the legendary song "The Look", N°1 in 32 countries in the world, (Record!!..) including USA, and ITALY!!! The sound of the song "The Look" is truly something exceptional, the atmosphere they have managed to create is truly Incredible, even listening to it today one is left speechless!!!

This is awesome. One of the more interesting old digital synths.

Very cool demo of this - I've had two ESQ's and now a SQ80. It was my first 'real' synth and I have spent an insane amount of time programming it - without a doubt, the most intuitive, flexible, fat and feature-rich synth from that era. Cmon, who else offered 3 oscillators and a sequencer back then! Those waves are wacky, I will have to let my buddy know who I gave my ESQ to! (Still in the family!). Thanks for the clear demo of the hidden waves.

Only thing I'd swap my ESQ-1 for is an SQ-80! Love those Ensoniq synths so much.

    Nice video, thank you.
Ensoniq made excellent machines and even decades after their release they give us some gems.
I bought my EPS new and after he broke some months agos, beyond repair in my goegraphical area, I replaced it by an EPSm found at fair price (wasn't so easy to find one, actualy).
I still miss the poly-aftertouch"ed" keyboard of my old faithfull EPS, but well, I'll survive.

Wow! Now this is what I am interested in! Using these synths for unusual and alien type sounds. Great job! Awesome use of the esq-1. The best use of this synth I’ve seen so far. Really inspired by this video, thank you!

Wow, this is rad! I don't own the original machine, but this feels almost like you've unlocked an industrial-themed hidden-mission in the side quests of a beloved game. I couldn't come up with better sounds for a cyperpunk nightmare.

Thank you for sharing this. Not only a great example of how to program the ESQ1, but also taught me some fundamental synth programming (i think fundamental) such as what amplitude moculation does when modulating a steady tone with a pulsating tone. genious. Thank you.

So funny, you can do a very similar thing with the mirage albeit a bit more random, but its very similar. Must be due to similar memory allocation. As they describe it in the Advanced Sampler's Manual, they describe the Mirage wavesamples to be allocated on pages of samples but describe all the pages like they are "on a strip of tape" so kind of linear. So there are ways to jump between these pages of sounds with these strange workarounds. The Ensoniq VFX "ALLWAVES" setting is similar as well.

my unit has the os 3.53 hidden waves eprom installed and I'm not able to get any pulsing sounds that evolve quite like your example no matter what octave I use. I'm wondering if the modded eprom is perhaps not as good as the stock 3.5 and using the old transoniq 75 waves method. are you using any effects outside of the esq-1 for this patch?

    • @RoshiAi
      @RoshiAi  Před 4 lety

It's very much possible that each Rom sounds different. The Transoniq hacker edition that is shown in the video even mentions this.

    • @RoshiAi

No outside effects used to modulate the waves.
