    The correct way to stack them for maximum efficiency is to use one with about 1/4 less surface area on top with a metal heat spreader between each stage. Also reduce the element count by about a third per stage. This gives you the full potential for cooling temperature but actual power transfer will drop quickly as the stages are stacked. That With the full surface area you can only do two of them and only get an extra 20 degrees C to show for it, however if you do the top one at less current the device will cool a lot better.

    So the only problem with the PID is the slow response time? What if the cooler was supplied with like a 3d printer mainboard and pid controlled like that? also the problem with the mosfets is the power to switch the gate? so if there was an external power supply that was switched by the arduino using a relay board, to then switch the mosfet, then would that fix that problem? or was the frequency of switching also a problem? pls help

    100w input for 2000w heat sounds like great cop for heating applications. Better than what a typical aircon can give. Would it then be a good Idea to heat the inside of a house with these? Perhaps with two aluminium water blocks, one on the hot side keeping the heat inside, and another on the cold side, extracting heat from the outside. I'm thinking winter conditions in South Africa where it rarely gets below 0c. I've been waiting to experiment with this for a while and this explanation of cop gives me hope. Thanks for a good explanation

    • @imho7250
      @imho7250 Před 11 měsíci

      His example was terrible because a Peltier module will never move 2000w of heat using 100w of power. The theoretical maximum heat moved will be 100w and the heat output will be that 100w plus the 100w input. So 100w in for 200w out. But the reality is probably more like 100w in, 50w moved, 150w out. This is way too inefficient to replace a heat pump, and way too impractical to replace a resistance heater, since you would need to get the cold side of the Peltier out of the room you are trying to heat, otherwise its 100w in and 100w out. COP was created because it’s impossible to be 150% efficient. Meaning you will never CREATE more than 100w of heat with 100w of energy. COP helps to explain how if you have heat already and just need to move it, that can be done using a fraction of the energy needed to create that heat. Peltier “efficiency” is especially difficult because it’s a resistance heater that also pumps heat but generally used for cooling. Sort of like propane refrigerators that used the heat from propane to cool the refrigerator. All the heat was just vented outside. Lol

    I suspect the 2-10% 'efficiency' (should use COP) that is often referenced .. is not just the TEC application side of these devices .. but also from the TEG application side that some people use these same devices for .. In a TEC application where a lower dT helps get a higher COP and one can use this to get very high COPs from very tiny dTs .. the same device in a TEG application sees a higher COP with higher dT .. but .. in a TEG application the materials common units are made from impose more limits the extremely high dTs , not allowing large enough dTs for a common TEG to see a COP more than those 2-10% range often referenced.

    Thanks for all the great videos on TEC's! Any thoughts on this concept: I have a free stream of hot air on my design, and I want to use that heat energy to boil water - and to do this I propose using a TEC to transfer heat energy from the hot air stream (using the cold side) into a heat exchanger, to boil water. Since low "efficiency" is just waste heat - wouldn't this work particularly well on a TEC? Would you recomment a couple stacked (cascading) TEC (to get the temp above 100°C), or a single TEC?
