"Moon River" by the great Johnny Mercer.
Just bought one. Best guitar I have ever owned. I would take if over my Gibson 335, my Guild , or my Epiphone Casino. If you’ve never had the pleasure of playing one and are thinking of buying a new guitar, do yourself favor , play. one. Nice playing. Enjoyed the video.
@@CScott-zu5mv - thanks very much. I must agree with you. I’ve had many great guitars but this one is simply stunning.
A timeless classis well done, thanks!
Increíble! saludos from Argentina, Buenos aires! gracias por la hermosa melodia ♫♫!
@@radinfo4937 - thank you very much!
this was awesome!! nicely played brother and such a sweet tone from your Eastman!
@@proverbs11vs30 - thanks brother! I’m loving this guitar! It’s a keeper. I’m thinking of setting it up with some flats.
@@starrynightguitars that would be cool, I had flats on my T-486 and it sounded great to me (but Im partial to flats 🙂) I have heard of 'half flats' but havent tried them yet..
@@proverbs11vs30 - what gauge flats do you use? Are you able to bend strings?
@@starrynightguitars I currently use diadarrio flats .11 gauge (I dont do much bending at all) but I can bend a whole step at the 12th fret (on the G string) and 1/2 step on 5th fret (G string), Im thinking about going down to .10s as they may be a bit softer on the nails (as Im trying to play more /exclusively finger style)
@@proverbs11vs30 -thanks! Yes, I’m thinking tens as well. I put a set of 11s on my telecaster and I just couldn’t bend anything. That might’ve been because of the scale length but I’m thinking I give 10s a shot.
Nice. New guitar sounds great.
Thanks Gary. I’m loving this guitar!
Awesome. Mac Millers cover is beautiful
Really nice :)
Love the choice of material. Partial to melody. Nice.
Thanks for listening. So am I!
I've heard that trick from a couple other sources i.e. putting felt or foam under the casings of P90s. Good to hear it worked. This guitar is high on my list of future acquisitions. Looks and sounds great! I appreciate hearing the first-hand experience from a jazzer.
Thanks for checking the video out. Yes, this is a great guitar. If you’re more of a rock player, it sounds killer with some dirt on it as well. Check out the video by Shawn Tubbs where he plays one of this with some drive. Incredible player!!
Nicely done, Rich.
Thanks very much!
right on, old timer. hell yeah
Love this! Any jazz improv tips?
@@R0s3_Th3_S1mp - thanks for checking this out! As far as tips- do a lot of listening and try to start playing what you hear. Maybe check out Jim Hall & Grant Green. Great players that are a bit easier to figure out what they’re playing.
Great Video! Thanks. Im 65 and what to learn guitar. I like all genres of music Classical, blues, meta.. etc.. do you think this makes a good first guitar?
Thanks for checking the video out! I guess it could be a good first guitar. The only problem with that would be that you couldn’t play with other people with this instrument. That’s one of the most fun things to do & certainly one of the best ways to learn. Have fun & enjoy the journey!!
When I get old, I hope to be like you. Awesome performance
Thanks for sharing this Rich. You make it sound lovely. I had the good fortune to play a T64v/b late last year and I fell in love with it. I was shocked at how light in weight it was.
Thanks very much. Yes, it’s super light and the pickups are wonderful.
Pretty decent sound.
I have since sold this and bought a Henriksen Blu Six. Amazing amp!
Lovely
Beautiful guitar. I have a hollow body D’Angelico that had a rattle only on certain notes. Turned out to be the jack wire. Moved that wire around inside and eliminated the rattle.
Thanks. I’m still looking at the cause of some rattles. It has gotten better. I have a few more ideas I need to try.
Pro players like Jack use Squires playing out because they play and sound good but easily replaced if they are damaged or stolen. Got that from Earl Erb who is a Nashville Pro and session player.
Yep, I’ve read that as well.
Hard to believe its unplugged, gotta love the eastman semi'hollow!
Yeah, and it sounds incredible through an amp!
Nice smooth jazz licks at the last quarter too. Id love to jamarama with you Sir! Did i hear some Django influence? Besides the spanish sound i heard "hot club de' france"?
Thanks very much. I’m familiar with Django & his genius but I haven’t really checked his playing out. Too many guitarists- too little time!
Thought you were leading into "more than a feeling" at the beginning , then at the end you pulled A "DLR" ah..lol
I know, “More than a Feeling” ( I saw Boston back in ‘77) but not familiar with DLR?
I tried a T64v a while back and absolutely loved it. I'm planning on getting one. They're incredibly light in weight as well. Look forward to hearing it plugged in.
It sounds great!
Nice! Glad to see you went with the T64!
Hi Justin! Yes, it's a beautiful instrument. I was afraid I'd miss the T59V but I think I'm in love!
Beautiful guitar
It sure is!
If you don’t want to hear me blabber, jump to the 3:00 mark to hear the guitar.
Fantastisch sir
oh my - share your backing track it's amazing! and I think many of us would love to jam to your version of the song :D
Thanks very much! I don’t have a backing track. That was me comping and playing bass. It is loosely based on a version of this tune by Sylvain Luc. Check him out on CZcams. He just recently passed away. He was amazing!
I have the steel string newer model with AA batteries. As i recall the newer model has more synthesizer options. It's my go to guitar so i don't annoy the family. :-)
I've always thought the comparisons sound-wise is overblown. Whatever differences exist can always be compensated by working the volume/tone knobs and amp EQ a bit. Within the context of a full mix 99% of people wouldn't be able to pick out flat vs round by ear. Feel wise I personally prefer flat .11s with a lighter gauge unwound G string. As you experienced in that demo a wound G on a standard Fender scale length guitar is just too much tension, bending much more then a half-step is nearly impossible. A mixed set with heavy tops and light bottoms gives you the best of both worlds.
Wow. Beautiful
I have flats on my Epiphone IG ES 335...58 replica with the thick neck...I have a theory that flats not only are slick for moving up and down the neck but also will reduce fret wear. I thought about putting flats on my Fender black guard tele but for now it's still got round wounds....rounds are better for bends...you may need to go to a lighter guage flatwound...10s make you work a bit. I have an Ibanez custom archtop with flatwound twelves that I love for bossa or jazz standards but nobody is bending those strings anytime soon...actually I found I needed a lighter touch on heavier strings.
I have an anniversary 54 replica Squire Korean Strat that I'll never part with....love it
Try a Casino....light as a feather..fully hollow...also ES 339s are light
I have an Eastman T59V- like a 335. Great guitar but heavy! They do have a fully hollow 335 body style. I might have to check that out.
Rich kettner, you are some of my children's music teachers
That’s awesome! Are you Dallan’s Mom?
Always interested in players doing string comparisons. Although I'm a flats guy, I liked the way that the rounds speak - better balance from trebles to basses. A set up would probably fix the rattly high E. If not put a string one thou up on top.
Thanks for checking out the video. I’m with you- I think I prefer the rounds in this guitar. I’m wondering if the scale length makes a difference in string tension. The guitar definitely needs a set up. I’ve used flats on my jazz guitars and they were much easier to play, as I recall. What do you use flats on?
@@starrynightguitars I have an Ibanez GB10 [24 3/4 inch scale] I like flats on the shorter scale guitars like the GB10, 175's etc but Fender scale, 25 1/2 has noticeably more string tension, so I've opted for 10-46 on Teles. I'm partial to a Tele myself and am considering getting another another after watching your video. I've had some really nice ones including one of the first Nocaster Relics. It was nice and light and had a fat neck. But my best Tele wasn't even a Fender but a Yamaha Mike Stern signature model. Picked it up in a store just out of interest, plus I like Mike [specially on his Standards album] Anyway that thing just sang like a bird, was light and had a Seymour Duncan 59 at the neck and a Hot Rails at the bridge. Beautifully made instrument, should never have sold it ....been on the lookout for another and even offered the buyer of mine more $$ to buy it back. An experienced player could get any number of tones for most any style, but for jazz, sounded so warm, but could switch on a dime to funk or screaming. Truly a very versatile guitar. I should say I'm a one guitar guy and try to get all I can out of what I have available. And I never had to change from 10-46 roundwounds! In closing I should say that the flats I use on the GB10 are D'Addario Chromes 10-48 but with the 1st swapped out with a 13 and the 2nd with a 15. Rich Severson put me onto this fat top, skinny bottom hybrid set. [Look up his You Tube video on the subject of strings] Good luck and happy playing.
Thanks Rich. Could just be my ears but the flats did make the sound a little more mellow. Great to hear them tested on a relatively solid-body guitar. I do like the way flats generate a bit less string noise through a louder amp but I’m a round wound guy anyway.
Yeah, they are a bit more mellow but I find them harder to play. Maybe just need some time to adjust to them.
Squier guitars and basses are great quality instruments and your Squier Tele is a beautiful guitar. Sorry to hear about the collarbone and back issues, hope you’re doing ok.
I think you’re right. These seem to be great little guitars. Part of my issue is that I’m 66 and I’m guessing these issues will only get worse with time. 🫤
@@starrynightguitars , I understand all too well, I’m 63 and everything hurts! Enjoy the new Tele.
awesome looking guitar! i also deal with pain while playing live from a broken collarbone (guitar strap lays right where my titanium plate has a screw sticking slightly out) so the lighter the guitar- the better! headed to a gig in a few hours where i'm playing my road worn jazzmaster
Thanks! Yeah, I’ve broken both collarbones and the last one in 4 places! I have the metal bar as well. It hurts with seat belts more than my guitar. This guitar is only 5 pounds!
sounds familiar, but i cant remember what sound I reference to ;))
awesome video, I have flats on my tele and love them for jazz 🙂
Thanks! What kind of flats do you use? Also, what gauge? I've used Chromes but I'm thinking of trying the extra lights.
@@starrynightguitars I use chromes 11-50 but I know Matt uses chromes 10's on his guitars...I tried 12's but they were too heavy for me..have fun with your new guitar brother🙂
Thanks for the info. I think I’ll try to start with the 11’s.
@@starrynightguitars looking forward to hearing your thoughts on flats on a tele, Matt uses 10's mostly as they dont chew up his nails like the 11s did (as he only plays with nails)
@@proverbs11vs30 - Interesting. For the past year I've been using acrylic nails. They worked great but there was a good deal of maintenance. I decided about 2 months ago to stop using them and my nails are finally back. (When you use fake nails, your real nails become paper thin.) It's taken this long for them to grow out. MAYBE I should try the 10's because I do play a good bit with just my nails.
I think that's all the Telecaster you probably need. Unless you have money burning a hole in your pockets and you just can't resist, then maybe a Player series Tele would do the trick for you.
I think you are right!
I wrote out my guitar goals for 2024. So, I think I need a teacher to guide me. I bet if Rich was my teacher, I’d be further along. I have intermediate guitar knowledge and beginner skills! I don’t know how to level up 😂
Good for you to write out your Guitar goals for the year! To be honest, I’ve never really done that, but I’ve heard of a lot of guitar players that do that and it really helps them stay focused and what they want to accomplish. As of next Friday, I will be retired, so, if you’re interested in some guitar lessons, send me a message! All the best and take care.
I love my mini...was just running my Katana mini into the aux input of the mini today....the fishman sounds awesome with the Katana running into it (Phone jack to fishman aux)...even distortion...very clean and articulate. I don't blast it but it pumps up the katana's volume and gives me the electric sound. It gives me more clean volume from the katana and a different tone. Give me other types of sound. Used to have a Guild X500....makes me want to get another arch top. Sounds fabulous. It does work great for solo work and my Yamaha LL16...I use a 10 band EQ sometimes to cut the 16k band....it mello's it out. The Fishman mini has a good preamp in it....I use it for Transducers on my other guitars....the LL15 is a passive piezio and the Fishman boosts it fine. I like chorus and reverb at about 10 oclock. You have an older one....the newer mini's have bluetooth
This performance was beautiful and made doing my psychology homework extremely cozy. Liked, shared, and subscribed for sure.
Thanks for the kind words and thanks so much for sharing and the sub! Keep doing that homework!!
Great video gonna learn that
youre playing are tasty, love it❤ keep swingin sir!
Thanks very much.
Impressive but way beyond my skill level lol
same
Bravo! Can't have been that easy to play on an acoustic.
Very tasteful solo.
