Part III: Round 1, Ready, GO! | Ollie Odyssey Japan Vol. 2
Growing up in the US, arcades were a big deal. Beat-em-ups, fighting games, and racers played on these big cabinet machines were super appealing and many kids (including myself) looked forward to any chance to spend hours at the local arcade. Eventually, arcades faded in popularity. With console games catching up in hardware power and allowing a very similar experience at home, it wasn't as appealing to go to arcades. The recent years brought their relevance back some, especially for adults with barcades. And you'll still see arcade cabinets at some places such as the laundromat and movie theater. Still, it just didn't have the same level of wonder as before. Most of what you might see these days are cabinets from the 80s, 90s, and 2000s.
It's a much different story in Japan. This is the country where a lot of these 80s, 90s, and 2000s arcade games originated from. And here, it never lost its spark. In any major city in Japan, you can find several big, multi-floor arcade centers with the latest and greatest games. The variety also stands out - mech shooters, head-to-head racing games, taiko drum machines, and the latest Street Fighter are some of what these places have to offer. And it's not like there is a single cabinet of a game. A lot of the games have their own entire row laid out! It's really a spectacle and if you have some time to spare, be sure to check one out.

Part II: The Eccentriciti of Dotonburi | Ollie Odyssey Japan Vol. 2

Surprisingly, my first trip to Osaka this year didn't involve a stop to Dotonburi. I have been there a couple times 10 years ago but it was awhile ago so I could only remember bits and pieces. I finally returned to this popular street and it was as busy as ever. There's a reason why it attracts so many people - plentiful food options, visually striking 3D shop signs above their entrances, and a...

As I expanded it to 35 parts, I learned how much joy I got out of the whole thing - from going on the trip to turning the memories into little bites of visual content. 2 months later, it was all put out there. I remember that during my 1st trip to Japan on 2020 i was just amazed by the arcades!! Specially the retro ones with games from the late 80s , and 90s. Down here in Chile, arcades were quite popular too , in fact, arcades were like a hood kid's choice when it comes to videogames because we did not have the money for a NES or another home console system , so when i had the chance of playing again Sunset Riders, Tumblepop , Final Fight, so on and so forth i was so happy and kinda sad couse i wished that friends from my childhood could be there with me enjoying those games as we used to enjoy when we were kids. Awesome video as always , man. Cheers!

  • @SamanthaEarle
    @SamanthaEarle Před měsícem

    Another splendid instalment, Ollie. 🤗 Out of curiosity, how do you create the blue lines - is it some type of bloom or halation effect within your editing software?

    • @OllieOdyssey325
      @OllieOdyssey325 Před měsícem

      Thanks! The blue flares are thanks to anamorphic lenses. Some people don't like the flares because of how unnatural they can be for certain environments and how they can appear when they're not desired, but I lean more towards liking them than not. I actually don't know the reason as to why streaks happen with these lenses, but it is part of what makes them particularly cinematic - light streaks, wider aspect ratios (meaning wider field of view), and the tendency to have more oval bokehs. I think there's a few more differences that make the images different from standard type lenses. These lenses are probably not as useful for a lot of standard work, but for film-like experiments, they are a lot of fun.

    • @SamanthaEarle
      @SamanthaEarle Před měsícem

      @@OllieOdyssey325 Thank you for the detailed response and explanation of anamorphic lenses. I like the flares. They’re adding to the storytelling in this series. 💙

      @OllieOdyssey325 Před měsícem

      @@SamanthaEarle If you're ever curious, you can research the different offerings where some have less pronounced flares and even different colors! Blues tend to give a modern/sci-fi feel, while something like orange can work well with a lot of natural light.
