This is from Franz Lehár's 1929 operetta The Land of Smiles, which was set in 1912 Vienna. Nancy LItten plays her own piano arrangement of the song (which was written for the tenor Richard Tauber, a friend of Lehár).

In 1895 the Hungarian composer Ede Poldini wrote Dancing Doll as one of 'Marionettes', 7 pieces for piano. Kreisler later arranged it for violin with piano accompaniment, but this is the original version, played by Nancy Litten.

This piece is most jolly, and sounds jollier still at a brisk tempo. As I have small hands, plus arthritis in both thumbs, for this second take I rearranged many of the wide chords and octaves to enable me to get up speed. I imagine Handel flying down the Strand on his skateboard, his wig streaming out behind him...

    A thousand thanks Nancy. That was one of the first songs I knew as a child and it's taken 70 years for me to hear it played properly. The teddies also played their parts well, as they should.

    What's with the silly costume? "Bygone age"? This was originally titled The Man In The Street, and renamed just before publication to celebrate the accession of Elizabeth THE SECOND. Tudor music sounds nothing like this.
