All of my friends I have kids and I have no way to make it back to the Boundary Waters would you be willing to hang on
Fiskars are cheap. Yours has a chip in the edge.
I really enjoyed this video. I was in this area in 2022 from 9-21 to 10-11 on a solo and spent the last night at Polly in the site of your first camp. If I remember correctly it was a full moon that night. Saw 3 wolves at Koma that trip. Knee deep in memories. Thanks, looking forward to seeing more of your material.
That means a lot, thank you! That Kawishiwi area is a special place isn't it? Never have gotten to see wolves, let alone 3 of them up there. Hopefully, if we do see them, it will be from a safe distance! I appreciate your kind words and hope you get up to the BWCA!
FYI: Watch a video of the history and success of the Gateway Trail (Produced 2000-2001): czcams.com/video/D-j4-CTKG2Q/video.html
Thanks Dave! I'm always interested in some history of Minnesota. I'll give that a watch.
I would love to go to this. I had no idea that they had a state park for Lindbergh and his home. Right down my alley for sure.
Hello! If you get the chance to go to the park, I would recommend checking out the museum too. It's literally across the street from the park and is open all summer and fall. Thanks for the comment! Cheers!
I loved everything about this video, especially the Northern Lights and Tarp Boyz (airhorn)!!!! I love the firewood lean-tos and rock sculptures on your fire pit. I am curious how you managed to have fresh steak on the second night. Did you take it frozen or was it some other magic? I really appreciated seeing your meals. They looked so much more delicious than pack after pack of freeze dried stuff. Any other tips for a fellow foodie in the wilderness?
Hello Kristin! Thank you first of all! We usually freeze the steak or protein the night before and have it the first night. This trip we got caught in the rain, and the temperature was cool enough that we were able to have that steak on night three, which is pretty unheard of! I agree, I don't know how people can just eat the freeze-dried meals; they are so unhealthy and packed with Sodium! As far as tips, I would say bring as much fresh food as you can carry. We've started bringing bags of salad for the first night at least. Thanks again for the comment and I hope you get up to the BWCA this year!
@@mattwinthewoods thank you so much for replying and for sharing your video! It looks like it was a really fun trip. We are planning our first BWCA trip for this September. I am so looking forward to it and appreciate your help!
Thanks for this upload Matt. I was just googling trying to see what the walk-in sites were like.
You're welcome Scott! I decided to post just because of that reason. I wasn't able to find any info either.
I love to do stealth camping along many of these trails. You would never see me as I am a ninja.
You'd have plenty of places to stealth! Thanks for the view and best of luck with the future stealth spots!
awesome hike thank you for sharing! I do not know about the cemetery being haunted but I do know that I witnessed a UFO while camping there in October 2023. Take care!
Hello! Thank you for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed it. I'm not sure the cemetery is haunted either! What did you see there, if you don't mind my asking? Strange lights or something else?
This is awesome
Much appreciated Jenny! Glad you found it entertaining. I hope you get up there too and have some adventure in the B-dub!
Great video. So-which S'more recipe is the best? No brag, just fact.
I would refer you to last year’s video and see the Bacon Reese’ Peanut Butter Cup S’more…. yes, Bacon :)
I hope this video finds you and it finds you well. If you have questions feel free to ask. Much love from Minnesota. Cheers!

Fall colors! 🍁🍂
I could hear sounds on your recording...so
Thank you for doing this. I want to make a day of this. Maybe camp overnight. This was exactly the kind of video i wanted to see. Looks beautiful.
"Promosm" 🤦
Did you explore any of the towns along the way? My wife and I are planning to do this, but would be interested in going to some of the towns and look for breweries, wineries or cool places to eat.
Hello, I explored Madison Lake a bit. It's a charming town. I would definitely stop there to look at the lake at least. Faribault has some decent spots to check out.
Just waking up in the mornin gotta thank god. 4th of July weekend and lots of smog! Got my grub on. Grilled that jackolope!!
Nothin like 4th of July bbqs with the fam!
Freedom!!
Multi-tool. The rest I did not miss.
I always come back to this song once in awhile. Love it!
Ayyy!
No, you don't need a multitool... you likely already have the bits and need not spend all that money. If you really need pliers and 5" Vice Grip will do. Yes, put your money into box saw, or quality folding puring saw. No, you don't need an axe... select your wood according to your needs and split with the 'quality and approprately size' bush knife. You can live without a hammock. Eye plugs, yes. Partition bag, handy, but whatever. There is no definitive fishing lure, just take a recommended share of reliable ones... and know how to fish them effectively. Bug net is already part of your tent ...you selected the right tent? (Don't go in bug season!). No, you don't any purification kit... you made a fire, you have pans! Save time? What are you doing carry there? Time is what you've got. Less you carry the easier and more enjoyable it gets. Some people got money burning a hole in their pocket though.
It's always interesting to hear what other people's experiences are in life. It sounds like you know what you like. I appreciate the comment!
@@mattwinthewoods And at this point in the comments Matt there are some interesting points made. Having travelled lightweight in various formats, I have learned to shed trinketry. There are many 'nice things that could be helpful'... even essential during certain seasons. But for me in the BW, sooner rather that later you are going to have to pick it all up and cart it down a portage ...where the GAME CHANGER is not having to bear the weight of something only you might use. Good posting Matt, as it provokes focus. Different folk have different priorities for their BW experience, so..?
Thank you for this video. Love hearing the details on these rides.
Thank you for the kind comment! I hope you get the chance to go do the trail. Cheers!
That Howard Dean impersonation at the 6:27 mark is worth the whole video. Good job guys,
Haha! Good ol' Howard Dean :) I appreciate that Cody. I hope you're able to get up there to the BWCA soon too.
@@mattwinthewoods be there in mid-June. Looking forward to it!
@@codyburkham6407 Awesome! Hope you have a bug shelter or some good repellants for the critters! Cheers.
so entertaining! what fun. looking forward to my first trip this august XD
I appreciate that! I'm excited for you to find this special place which I'm sure you'll fall as deeply in love with as me. I'm hoping the bugs aren't too bad this year. Cheers!
Looked like an epic trip! I can't wait for mine coming up in June. A few trips ago I kept getting skunked trying to get a laker in the boat. One day we went to try again and I thought, maybe we should give a tobacco offering to the lake. I ended up getting a perfect eater and my buddy caught the biggest laker I've ever seen. I liked the tribute to the other you Tube creators, Shug is awesome! One thing we tried last year I recommend is to fill your boat with beaver wood when you can. It provides a perfect smokeless fire. Looked like you guys know how to find quality wood though. Hope you have a great time this year if you are going!✌️
Thanks and I'm glad you enjoyed the video! That's cool about the Laker and the tobacco offering. I'm still trying to get my first Laker. We sometimes do get the beaver wood, but try to get other if available. Whatever will burn in the end of the day right?!
@mattwinthewoods Indeed🔥 We have had great luck catching lakers with silver and blue spoons. I've heard that Rapala Tail Dancers work great too, but we didn't have any luck last year with them. We had success catching walleyes with leeches and white twister jigs. We usually base camp on Knife Lake and do daytrips to surrounding lakes. Sema is a good one for getting nice eater sized lakers. We usually have good luck on Knife as well. I caught a massive northern on Eddy too, I've never caught a fish that big in my life! I can't wait for this year! Good luck this time around you'll get one!
Awesome night pics on the 1st Polly site. Always want to see northern lights and a moose when we go. Never see either. That campsite on Alice looks like a real gem. Getting a good rinse in the water is always interesting with lake bottoms. Sand is always such a treat! Great video!
It's a great experience seeing some Moose. We were lucky enough to have two sightings and actually paddled behind a Moose and it's calf on Gaskin while wolves were howling. I wish I had a camera back then. Alice was amazing and the water was some of the best I've ever drank in my life. 10/10!
Hey, wow, thanks for the shout out. We met Dan Cooke at Canoecopia that year and I asked him what’s the prettiest lake in the boundary waters? He said Omega. So we had to of course! We didn’t love that site but it was super windy and we were exhausted by the time we got there and a storm was brewing. It hit before camp was set up so that was kind of a comical scramble. But we had fun and the next morning we moved to another Omega campsite which was much better and one of my favorites in the BWCA. Neat trip! I like the cool names you have the critters 😊
Yes, Omega has it's own charm doesn't it. If I'm in that area again, will definitely have to check out more of those sites. If it's one of your favorites, it must be a good one!
@@mattwinthewoods there’s also one of the worse campsites I’ve seen in the BWCA on Omega in a bay by itself.
@@MamasBasecamp Yes, we call those kind of sites "Mosquito Holes." There's one that was barely big enough for a tent on Caribou Lake that we passed up and some poor folks had an eight man tent squeezed in there the next day!
Can't wait to get back to it again this coming Summer! One year, we visited with "President Theodore Roosevelt" who had set up his camp along the trail at Welch Station. Adam Linquist was the re-enactor and he was very much in-person during the whole visit! We enjoyed his presentation and attention to detail!
One of my favorite Presidents! Sounds pretty memorable!
Got the same trail pass (and others) hanging up in CF! We get them and ride every Summer! Great times with the grandson! Saw Eagles along the trail on a ride last Summer along with plenty of tubers!
Hopefully I'll see you and the eagles out there this Summer! Always nice to speak with people with similar interests. Cheers!
"Don't be a Jimmy!" Needs more views! Pretty clever and made me laugh! Thanks for sharing your trip report. Looks like it went well. You visited some of my favorite places and I plan to solo out of that entry point in May. French dip: I'll have to give that a try...looked delicious! Nice bass and pretty cool to get the beach site on Alice. Love the Adams area! Did you happen to explore up towards Boulder Lake at all?
You're a man after my own heart with that Solo trip planned! I appreciate the kind comments. Definitely try that French Dip; it's actually easier than you think and yes, that beach spot on Alice (which I've called Cedar Grove Beach or CGB) was an amazing site and is absolutely in my top 3! Never did make it up to Boulder Lake, though we saw there was a 5 star site there. Have you made it there?
@@mattwinthewoods Yes, I've been to Boulder Lake...my favorite spot in the B-Dub! My two oldest daughters and I spent a night on Boulder in the middle of a 16-day 125+ mile adventure a few years ago. Boulder isn't easy to get to...the portage from Cap is long and overgrown with a "water feature" in the middle (aka boggy swamp). From Adams, the small stream has plenty of beaver dams, mud, and fake portages...love it! And, if you head that way, the portage from Beaver into Adams is one of my favorites with some cool rock cliffs, several caves, old-growth cedar forests, and other beautiful features. Do you have a trip planned for 2023? Which entry point?
@@daughterdad007 That sounds like an incredible trip and that portage from Beaver to Adams sounds intriguing too! Yes, trip is planned for a trip to Little Saganaga this year; fingers crossed. Planning one yourself this year?
@@mattwinthewoods Planning several! 😁 How about you?
Cool video! Kawishiwi River is great but I have only been on the S. Kawishiwi River EP side, was planning on hopefully going to Alice / Polly area next fall. What is that screen tent you were using?
The Kawishiwi is a unique area in the B-dub, no doubt. I hope you get up to Alice and get one of the beach sites! I think you mean the Box Net, when you were saying screen tent? The one I own is a Sea to Summit Box Net (Double). Cheers!
Beautiful
It's a special place. Cheers!
Y'all seem to be beautiful people

Thanks man, awesome video with helpful stuff! 🍻
Glad it helped you out and I hope you get up there this year!
Damn that’s a sweet saw, I’ve always called them a “Swede saw” though. My old man used to cut trees and that’s what he always called them... doesn’t mean a thing, don’t anyone get bunched up on me now! 🍻
You're very right about the Buck Saw! I just might have to start calling it a "Swede Saw" too.

Nice trail and great sights
It is a fun trail! Especially the section through Stillwater and over the bridges. Cheers!
Beautiful park
How busy was it this year? Always nice to go when the rugrats are in school
I agree with you. It's kind of funny... we passed all empty campsites going in, but of course, going out it filled back up. We left on a Monday and that previous weekend was surprisingly busy.
Bathtub! You'll be glad you had it! Feel free to ask or add anything about your BWCA gear as well. Thanks for watching!
Make Sure it's in 1080p! Kawishiwi River in the BWCA during the late Summer/Early Autumn is an experience everyone should have. Feel free to comment or ask anything you might like to ask or know! Thanks for watching!
Is that train tunnel still active for train traffic? Would be scary to enter it if it's still active.
It was last used in October of 2008. Still a little scary or spooky going through though. Thanks for the watch!
Why is it not being used anymore.
@@andrewfosbinder2826 Apparently, the overpass over Highway 61 was drooping down and was hit by a Semi-Truck. Also, other reasons I'm sure.
@@andrewfosbinder2826 I believe the plant closed in 2002 according to article I read, and they ran clean up trains up until 2008. Again, it was from an article I read, I don't know which site I found it on.
They removed the middle overpass sometime in the mid 2010's. Not sure exactly the year. Yes, a semi truck did hit it.
Most people say a Silky Saw is better than the bucksaw if you get the correct model. You can search comparison videos. The people who know how to use it cut twice as fast as the bucksaw.
Thanks for the tip! I've used them before and I may get one myself too. I still love my bucksaw though, but to each their own I guess. Happy Camping!
Always went silky gomboy, just picked up a silky big boy, it's insane.
Yes, a Silky Zubat with the regular teeth... not the cheapest, but by far the best (speaking as a tree pro).
and where can I find it
It's called a DT Fat by Rapala. You'll want the top water one, not a deep diver. Just cast it towards shore and close the bail so that the lure kicks out and doesn't get tangled in the fishing line. Lots of fish over the years on this lure. Cheers!
@@mattwinthewoods thanks for the tip
