As a former Cable installer i can almost guarantee that wall by the light switch was a PITA to get to so they moved over a few feet because it was more accessible. Running wires AFTER the home is drywalled is difficult and costly

That room would likely be hotter and less efficient because the thermostat is in the closest. If the heat never gets to the thermostat, the switch never opens, leaving the solenoid open to heat the room longer.
