💦Indoor plumbing is one of the best innovations that people take for granted today. It is amazing how people lived before the public water works. Having to collect #rain #water and then hand draw your water for bathing or washing. Think about how our ancestors lived with no electric, gas or waterworks inside their homes. It was a lot of work and a very different way of living than we do today. Most people would struggle today if they had to live the way our elders did.

Cisterns are an ancient technology for the collection of rain water, were quite common at homes throughout the 19th century up into the 1930’s. Often times using the roof surface, collecting rain water and gutters with downspouts delivering water into the cisterns. Most cisterns were built in homes by using the foundation walls and then water was drawn and delivered by hand pump. The water was typically not good enough quality for drinking therefore it was mainly used for washing, bathing and laundry.
