Winter Woodland Photography
It's been a while (again!)
This one was filmed back in winter after we had a very brief snowstorm which was still covering the woods. Before this video i'd been a bit uninspired from overthinking my images too much. In this video I decided to let go of that and see what happens. There were some pretty magical results!
Enjoy and thank you.
p.s. Sorry the quality is a bit lower in this one, I had to record in 1080 due to a memory card issue!

    I am a hiker. Fogs aren’t welcomed at peaks and summits as they obscure the view and vastness of landscape. Came here looking for tips to avoid them, as mountain weather is highly unpredictable, but I am amazed by the video shots. I like how you stationed yourself in them. It shows the scale and contrast whenever there’s human element to it. The video colours are also amazing. Stayed because of the rabbits too.

      @@PeterSladenPhotography I tried out some of these techniques on a woodland waterfall I took back in the summer and it turned out fantastic. I was already using the Orton effect but was painting on a mask to select where it is applied. I had not previously considered luminosity. Affinity photo 2 allows a curves adjustment on a luminosity mask, and this achieved the same result as the TK add in. Finally what really made a difference was using the HSL and a mask to add some blue into the waterfall and add some yellow into the greens as you demonstrated. My Canon 7DMKii has a tendency to overdo the green. I think there will be some fog Sunday, so looking forward to trying out some shots. I've actually avoided fog previously as I'm only 3 years into photography and still on that learning curve.

  • @RussWeymouthPhotography

    I prefer the cooler tones in the film image. I shoot digital and tend to cool and desaturate the greens in the edit otherwise I feel they can dominate the scene. I also like to add colour contrast, playing with cooler hues and contrasting warmer hues.

      @PeterSladenPhotography Před 2 lety

    Really nice shots! I think greens can be tricky to deal with on any medium, overall prefer the film image but I think that's more because I prefer a cooler colour palette. Hi Peter, great images in this new video again. I cannot tell which I like more. As a crop shooter (Olympus) I am often jealous of the fullframe look which has more depth than crop sensor cameras, but at the same time I can't help but notice how film-like a crop sensor really is, as opposed to the overly perfect fullframe sensor. I like both. I am just starting out and honestly never even shot film before. I will soon. I will also get a FF at one point. The trees in that area are huge and beautoful by the way. I envy the British that you have these majestic forests which we don't really have here. The editing looks good too. I think it just looks like a painting, which is your style. I agree with you about the image with too much in it. Did not know where to look. But it was still a nice image. The one right after that was great! My verdict: I like both the film and digital look but in the end would still prefer digital, as it simply gives you more detail and better colours. But both are great

    • @PeterSladenPhotography
      @PeterSladenPhotography Před 2 lety

      Hey Axel, thanks as always for the thoughtful comment. That's a great point about the look/feel of the crop sensor. I mainly just have my film camera for fun and travel but thought it would be nice to try with my woodland photos, definitely going to take it it with me more, went out with it a couple more times after this. Yes, this location was breathtaking, it's very far from where I live, the woodland near me isn't quite as enchanted and ancient looking, it was amazing to explore for a couple of days. Yes, I'm still always trying to get too much in the images sometimes but thought that area was beautiful. I'm undecided which I prefer between the film and digital, I like them both for different reasons. Thanks again and look forward to seeing more of your images on IG.

    Very nice set of image mate! I like your editing style too - realistic and not over saturated/contrasty. When I'm feeling a bit uninspired to shoot or when the conditions aren't good I try some different genres of photography, that sometimes works or at least keeps your eye in.

      Thanks so much for commenting, I'm definitely leaning more towards more realistic/naturalistic editing nowadays. That's a really good tip and great for getting a perspective on things! Thanks again and have a great day!

    I totally agree. As somone else mentioned in the comments a mist filter is great way to achieve this effect in camera. Oddly I also perceive the pictures taken with a mist filter to have more detail when pixel peeping.

      Thanks for the comment! Yes love using pro mist filters in video work and in photos too depending on the situation. I hadn't noticed that myself that sounds really interesting! I'll have to have a look back through and keep an eye out. Thanks again for the comment and have a great day!

    Totally brilliant images Peter! I agree about the burnout part. There was more than a week fo fog here in the Netherlands (without sun at all though) and after shooting almost every day I kind of had enough for a while and taking a break right now, as I am totally uninspired and perhaps even bored with the local forests. I hope to get back to it in a few weeks, and I am hoping for all of us photographers we will have some snow here soon. I honestly cannot pick a favorite image in all of these. And I feel your frustration. There's nothing more troublesome than having other obligations on a day with amazing conditions......! Cheers!

      Hi Axel, Thanks so much for such a thoughtful comment and the kind words. Completely agree with what you have said, sometimes you just need to know when to take a break and completely switch off, it can seem counter intuitive and there is often a lot of pressure to just keep going/shooting but I think have a break is hugely beneficial. I'm hoping for a lovely, snowy day too! I've also found just looking for a new area to explore and not putting any pressure on yourself to take great images or even any images and just treat it as a scouting, exploration trip can be really helpful for regaining your inspiration. Thanks again and hope you have a great break!

    Hi Peter, Valleret Gloves from Norway is considered to be the best photography gloves on the market at present. Please ensure you purchase the liner gloves at the same time. And yes they have the magnets as well...

    Hi there! I was wondering are considering doing a follow through with processing of those scenes. For example, do you reduce the clarity or increase the haze. I recently tried this technique but failed on the processing in Lightroom Classic…

      Hey Allan, thanks so much for the comment, I've started a plan for an updated editing video, my first ever video was a woodland editing video, however there are some new lightroom features since then, I'll try and cover an updated editing work flow in the new video hopefully soon! Have a great day!
