Swiss travel pass or regional passes. Get food from the supermarket. Be wary about staying in hotels not in a major city as sometimes public transportation doesn't run late at night so i ended up paying for a taxi (88chf) for 20 minutes ride.

Gee! The food and restaurant prices mentioned for Switzerland 6 years ago are the same as today here in South Carolina, one of the cheapest places in the USA. Many will attribute this high prices to inflation worsened since last year, but I also lived in Texas (supposedly cheap) about 8 years ago and prices were not that different. No wonder the USA doesn't attract as many tourists as Europe does. USA really only has nature to show, which Europe does as well.

Is it easiest to make your home base Florence or Sienna. Sienna seems more affordable and more intimate… but not sure if it is as practical if you want to do day trips to wineries, Pisa, etc.

In regards to your comments on "siesta", there seems to be no consistency to ANYTHING Italians do. And yes, siesta is quite irritating, but it's more of a thing in the smaller towns and villages. The thing I found most irritating though is when they would leave their shops unattended and you'd have to walk around looking for the owner. The food, I kinda get what you're saying. I ordered Chicken Pasta Alfredo and Tortellini Preschiuto and the chunks of meat they put in it were so small you need a microscope to see them. Language, I personally didn't experience this. Aside from some of the local markets and restaurants, this was one of the easiest countries to communicate in English
