The PhotoJoseph channel is all about the camera… still photography, video and cinematography, live streaming, lighting, microphones, drones… if it's got a camera on it, in it, or attached to it, it's fair game! I emphasize gear and technique, balanced between equipment reviews and how-to's. Final Cut Pro, Lightroom and other photo and video software makes their way into the shows, too.
I'm a Panasonic LUMIX Ambassador, so my camera emphasis is always on the Panasonic LUMIX gear, like the GH5, S5 and S1H. I live stream regularly and have built up a broadcast studio that rivals small TV networks, and show off the Blackmagic ATEM Mini and their line-up regularly. These days I upload nearly everything in HDR, just because I can!
I also do commercial work for clients using all the techniques I talk about here- the best way to get good at something is to do it in the real world! And finally, yes I do offer individual consulting. Visit PhotoJoseph.com/1to1 to book a private session with me!

Choosing the Best Travel Lens: Modern Zooms vs. Vintage Glass
If you're traveling, you're taking a camera. And if you're taking a camera, then you're choosing a lens... or two, or three... to go with you. What do you do? Pack every lens you own, just in case? One or two zooms to cover the basics? Or a catch-all zoom like the Lumix 28-200mm f/4-7.1? Super lightweight, incredible range, but not the fastest. Perfect travel lens, right? Or, do you go old school? Pack something vintage, something with its own character, something all manual?
Modern Zoom Lenses: Convenience and Versatility
Modern zoom lenses like the Lumix 28-200mm f/4-7.1 are incredibly convenient for travel. They offer a broad range of focal lengths, allowing you to capture wide landscapes and zoom in on distant details without changing your lens. They're lightweight, making them ideal for travel when you want to pack light. However, while versatile, they often sacrifice speed, especially at longer focal lengths.
Pros of Modern Zoom Lenses:
Versatility: One lens can cover a wide range of focal lengths.
Convenience: No need to carry multiple lenses or change lenses frequently.
Lightweight: Easier to carry during long travel days.
Cons of Modern Zoom Lenses:
Speed: Not the fastest lenses, particularly at the long end of the zoom.
Character: Modern lenses can lack the unique characteristics that give photos a distinctive look.
Vintage Lenses: Character and Creativity
Vintage lenses bring a unique charm to your photos. With their manual focus and distinctive characteristics like vignetting, chromatic aberration, and specific bokeh shapes, vintage lenses can add a lot of personality to your images. The Super Takumar 50mm f/1.4 lens offers a beautiful focus falloff and a soft, halo-like blooming effect that modern lenses often can't replicate.
Pros of Vintage Lenses:
Character: Unique characteristics that add personality to your photos.
Build Quality: Often built to last with robust, metal constructions.
Creativity: Encourages more thoughtful and deliberate shooting.
Cons of Vintage Lenses:
Manual Focus: Requires more time and precision to focus.
Weight: Often heavier than modern lenses.
Limited Range: Typically prime lenses, so you might need to carry several to cover different focal lengths.
Final Thoughts
Choosing the best travel lens depends on what you're looking to achieve with your photography. Modern zoom lenses offer convenience and versatility, perfect for those who want a hassle-free shooting experience. On the other hand, vintage lenses bring a unique character to your photos, encouraging creativity and deliberate shooting.

Great overview of the Yolobox Pro. Answered many of my questions but I still have one: can you add a webpage as a source? I’m wondering specifically if it will work with some of the third-party CZcams chat apps that are out there.
My favorite combo for travel photography is the Panasonic GX9 with the Leica/Lumix 15mm f1.7 lens. Just returned from 3 weeks in Bangkok, Vietnam and Cambodia where I took over 2000 shots, mainly with this combo. I am amazed at the quality of the results. I exchanged my GX85 for the GX9 to benefit from the additional pixels (20mb instead of 16).
That is a great combo for sure! Haha I thought this comment was on my newest video… did you come here from there?
Thanks a million for this straight forward informative video. Though, I am seeing this exactly one day too late. I have struggled to do this for a long time, and only figured it yesterday - after studying. Network theory. Much more expensive route :). However, I have bookmarked this video to share with colleagues. Thank you again for sharing this invaluable video. Long time subscriber here.
That’s awesome to hear and I’m sorry it found you too late! Blame the algorithm! 😅
After shooting straight to SSD for a week, I don't want to go back. The only thing I'd really like to see is 4k120p to SSD from battery. I understand it might be a power draw limitation, but if it's just out of concern for battery life, I hope they enable it with a firmware update. At least allow burst shooting. Or pixel to pixel 120p. I think a lot of people will want to shoot to ssd for wildlife. Great for taking a reckless number of photos. The buffer clears much faster. Sorting and editing is noticeably faster. And it's where 120p really shines. Though, if it's between ProRes and 120p I'll probably pick ProRes most of the time, but it would be nice to have the option! 🤗
It’s a power issue. You simply need the additional voltage. You can pair a battery bank to the dummy battery to get it portable though.
Fantastic! Such a helpful video! Well done. 🔥
When you add shotgun mic with matte box and have the flap open, would it not obscure your audio recording, as it is covered by flap? I am looking to find a solution for it
Hi Joseph, In Lumix S5 mark ii When i record in mp4 file the audio shows as stereo but in .mov file the audio comes as mono & even in hdmi output also comes as mono audio. Is this bug ? Can it be fixed in future update? Thank you
You have full control over the audio settings. I’m on the road now and don’t have an S5II with me but look at the audio controls in each format. If you can’t get it I’ll check when I’m back in the studio next week.
@photojoseph thanks for ur reply. sure pls if you could check
@andrewjeffersonh ok remind me in a week. I won’t see this comment anymore by then.
@@photojoseph noted
Yup! I just saw this (no one I know uses it) and that’s the first thing I thought of… How does this work if you are pointed the camera lens AT the reflections of light OF the subject… 🧐 you have to use it LIKE a meter - in front of the subject - to get a reading… it’s just more cumbersome than a (granted/expensive) meter if you camera/legs is on a tripod or in a rig… but Run n Gun, PERFECT!
im always a person that has every thing wired no issues to wory about
Will it work on a GH5s?
Yes
@@photojoseph Thank you
Thanksss man
Nice! I´m the kind of novice who takes all of his lenes whith him when traveling, only to end using 1 or 2 of them. I do have vintage lenses that easier to use now thanks to the focusing help one gets from newer cameras.
The DCC18 would be awesome, if I could buy it. All I can find is 3rd party versions of the DCC17, but the idea of plugging a universal DC plug from a 3rd party coupler into a 3rd party battery into a new camera makes me feel like Christopher Walken in Deer Hunter.
It’s not shipping yet. Very soon I think though.
Can idynamic and highlight shadow adjustment feature in lumix cameras work together?
Small tripods hold longer lenses and are easier to set up.
Thank you for this. It was a big leap forward realizing that temperature of light does not equal temperature of the light on subject, bouncing into the lens.
straight up
four and a half minutes in and you still haven't got to the point.

thank u again!! you helped twice in differents moments, once 2 years ago, and now.
Glad I could help!
Is there a way to make constant preview work when flash it attached? Sometimes I want to see and meter the background exposure before adding flash to light my subject, seems to be impossible on a Lumix G9ii, odd. There is a setting for it on my Nikon Z6ii
No, the flash overrides it. You can just turn the flash off though.
the white balance card , is it total white or 18% gray???
Neither. It’s neutral, not white; probably 5% or 10% grey.
Pls make a vedio on comparison Lumix S5iix vs Lumix Gh7 please
Very few differences other than sensor size. GH7 has timecode input and the fully articulating LCD. Um… that’s all I can think of off the top of my head. I’ll dig deeper though. Maybe it’s worth comparing. EDIT: oh yeah; ProRes raw ha ha that’s a big one. Also ArriLog support and 4K modes without cropping.
Really appreciate the detail put into the focal length comparisons. After watching this video, I dug out an Olympus Pro 7-13 that I got years ago for my micro 4/3 system (the barrel distortion wasn’t ideal for my purposes). Well, I just sold it to make room for this nice new lens. My full frames will be happy to mix in a few shots with this.
That’s awesome! I’m glad the comparison was helpful. Honestly surprised me too. It’s a lot!!
Hi Joesph, In Lumix S5 Mark ii I couldn't take stills for CZcams thumbnail, while I am shooting video. Is this the bug or limitations from Panasonic or can be fix in future firmware upgrade?
I haven’t tried and don’t have one with me but that feature was probably removed. IIRC it interrupted the video. You’re better off pulling a frame from the video itself.
The GH7 looks amazing. ProRes raw internal wow. What about the added crop factor when recording RAW? Was that a bother?
It only crops if you shoot C4K or HD Raw. Shooting 5.7K raw is full sensor width. Basically it can’t scale when shooting RAW - if it did, it wouldn’t be RAW. So it’s always shooting pixel-for-pixel; in 5.7K, you’re using ALL the pixels (wide).
@@photojoseph But it does crop when you shoot 50/60p ProRes raw right?
The only 50/60p is C4K, so it’s the same crop as C4K30. Again raw is always pixel to pixel, so or else it isn’t raw.

Companion doesn’t need internet; it just needs a network. Nothing special there.
Skip ahead, Information starts about 4 minutes into the video. Correction, 5 minutes in
Bought V90 just to record ALL-I. Now I will starve whole month.
Drop calories not frames.
@@photojoseph sounds like plan.
It would have been nice to see a bit more about the settings and not just gear. Nice though.
Settings aren’t something worth talking about… the settings on the camera are what was needed for the shot and certainly not written down shot by shot. But I’m glad you enjoyed the BTS. Make sure you see the short itself if you haven’t already!
@@photojoseph I did, it was great! :) I was mostly just wondering if you shot it raw. Thanks form Australia!
The BTS was not raw, no. Just internal to the S5II. Probably HEVC open gate.
thanks for being upfront about being a Lumix ambassador.
Always
Very helpful video! One thing I might add is that in order to get into the ATEM setup settings, you must be connected via USB. Those settings will be greyed out if you're just connected over ethernet. But if you access them with USB, you can then go in there and enable the settings to also be available over ethernet.
Do you find that the proxies are good enough for coloring?
If you do HEVC proxies, yes. HEVC/H.265 is 10-bit. MP4 proxies are only 8-bit though, so no. Still verify on the original before outputting though just to be sure.
Yes, the HDMI over fiber is absolutly fabulous..
I shot at 30 & 60 fps guitar/singing. Flicker occurred on my accent flood lights. New apartment, and no issue when recording from webcam.
seems like a great video lens and simple to use but how is it for snapshots?
It’s great! I’d go with an AF lens if you really want to just do “snapshots” but it’s a really great little camera.
Love this. thanks for the video! very useful I use keynote so much searched for a good way to utilize its animation and you made it so clear! Just moved from adobe to apple's - it definitely something i'd use on a daily basis.
Awesome! I still use it to this day 😎
Does the hybrid zoom work in 4k open gate aspect ratio? Or only in the 16:9 aspect ratio? In other words If I film in 4k open gate can I still use the hybrid zoom? Very informative video thank you!
Great question. Yes, because the 3.8K open gate is lower resolution than the entire sensor, so it can crop into it without scaling up. It's about a 1.5x crop max; for example the 20-60 becomes a 20-92mm lens. For reference, if you shoot 6K open gate, then you're using the entire sensor already, so crop zoom is not available. If you shoot UHD up to 30p, it's about the same as 3.8K; you get to 93mm on that same 20-60 lens. If you shoot UHD 50p/60p then it's already an APS-C crop so hybrid zoom isn't available. And if you shoot HD up to 30p, you get 3.1x crop, to 187mm on the 20-60mm. Interestingly if you shoot HD 50p or higher, even though it's still full frame, you don't have hybrid zoom. I'll have to ask about that.
I only take my iphone with me. All the cameras are too heavy
I get it!
Hedging my bets, Takumar 50 f1.4 AND 24-105 f4 lumix on the road again 😁🤷🏼♂️
Haha fair. The 24-105 is a great lens but it’s BIG. Personally I prefer smaller for travel.
@@photojoseph I usually do too…but seeing if one lens can do it all…save time not switching and sensor dust issues but give up beautiful renditions of faster apertures…
I asked B&H Will the gh7 record 4channel 32bit float w this xlr2? The reply is Technically, yes, it's 4 channels (two XLR, plus the stereo input). Unfortunately though, it can only record up to 24-bit, not 32-bit. Regarding a manual, from what I can find, one is not published yet as this is a new item that has yet to be released. Please let me know if you require any further assistance. Thank you for choosing B&H. So i asked to clarirfy and received Thank you for contacting the Sales Department at B&H Photo Video and Pro Audio. Since this XLR adapter can only handle up to 24-bit, even though the GH7 is capable of 32-bit float, all that would pass through to the camera is 24-bit. Please let me know if you require any further assistance. Thank you for choosing B&H. So i sent a message asking how to get 32 bit float and waiting for a reply. Am i missing something or misunderstanding . Do you need something else besides Gh7 w DMW-XLR2 and a mic and memory card correct? So confused
That person is wrong. My video is right; it’s been vetted by Panasonic and everything stated in there I personally tested as well. You can capture 32-bit float on all four channels using the XLR2.
Thank You . Update .Thank you for contacting the Sales Department at B&H Photo Video and Pro Audio. I agree, it is strange that the XLR adapter can only do 24-bit when it's made for the GH7, which can do 32-bit float. I've reached out to a few people to see if the information we have is potentially a typo. I'll reach back out when I hear something. Sounds as when you ask a question a rep just rereads the description back to you wich makes it feel like they think i cant read correctly .Thanks again for clarity👍🏻🎉
@@DroseMr B&H is being told by Panasonic to get this right 😅 Thank you for letting me know they are giving out wrong info.
A sample of a live training video where you didn’t know how to operate the system.
❤Thank you Joseph🎉🎉
Glad it was helfpul!
That shot with the column and the hot air balloon looked like a vintage postcard. Lovely pics.
Thank you 😌
How well does it perform for macro video. Could you go from 3m/10f to 10cm/4inches while filming video without loosing focus? 😁
On one of the PDAF cameras, yes.
Joseph, can you help. We just upgraded from atem mini pro iso to the extreme, right in the middle of our first recording I see the recording indicator flashing, and now we have to keep stopping. We have one of the recommended drives, it's set up correctly, can you tell us why this is happening?
Which drive and did you format it exFAT? I believe that’s the recommended format.
@@photojoseph We are using the LaCie Rugged 1 TB SSD formatted to exfat
I have not tried that drive. All I can really recommend is trying another drive, or at minimum a different cable, although that's not likely the issue, assuming you're using the cable that came with the drive. Actually if the drive _didn't_ come with a cable, and you're using whatever you had laying around, that's likely the issue. Not all USB-C cables are the same; make sure it's a high speed data cable. Let me know what you learn!
@@photojoseph Thanks Joseph, We were using the cable that came with the drive. I ordered a new SSD drive so we will see. Thanks for your help. Love the work/content you do on here, you have saved us so much time and trouble with your videos, they have helped us in creating a great workflow that woulld've taken us forever to put together! Very much appreciated.
Great to hear! Please do let me know what happens when you get the new drive. Presumably you ordered a different make/model?
Dope video man, thanks for sharing ! Love the images when you enabled the X-Pan crop.. sick !
Appreciate it!
Is 1/4 strength enough or would u use 1/2 or 1/8 or even 1x?
For this lens the ¼ is enough. On clean lenses I think ½ could be good. 1 is too much, in my opinion.
@@photojoseph does focal length impact it, or does it have no difference? I have 1/8 and I barely see anything in my wide angle lenses
No, it shouldn’t. ⅛ is subtle. You’d really only see anything around direct points of light.
@@photojoseph ahh got it it’s kinda like anamorphic lens unless there’s a light source you can’t see the blue streak
@@photojoseph I tried 1/2 I find that it is amazing when you want a dreamy look 👀 but…. I find the auto focus hunts more When you are using manual focus it shouldn’t be a problem tho! I might switch everything to 1/4 like you suggested !
