Color, Contrast, Cleanup: Photo editing strategy
Nearly all great photos have been post-processed, either in a physical darkroom or in software like Lightroom and Photoshop. In this video, I share my strategy for editing photos to bring out their best.
It took me a while to find a purpose to my post-processing. I've been applying this general strategy for the past two years and finally feel able to articulate its goals. While the tools may change, these goals apply regardless of the software I'm using.
My processing style is heavily influenced by Ming Thein, an outstanding photographer whose style conveys a sense of transparency that's rare in modern photography. I can highly recommend his workflow tutorials: mingtheinstore.outthink.us/
Ming's blog is also excellent: blog.mingthein.com/

Focus shift: A quick demonstration

Common practice, when focusing lenses, is to focus the lens while its aperture is wide open, and then close the aperture to the desired position for exposure. Let's say you want to shoot a scene at f/5.6 you'd still open the lens to f/1.8 in order to focus, before stopping down to f/5.6 for the exposure. However, with some lenses this causes focus shift. |I've a friend this applies to. Because my wife and I are interested in astronomy, he decided to buy a telescope. It didn't end there, he then wanted to get into astrophotography. So he bought all of the gear, and over a year later we are still waiting to see the first photograph. He always complains that he doesn't have any money, but soon finds it when he wants something for his photography. A couple of years ago he bought a nice mirrorless camera, but will only take photos he can hang on his wall, always using ND filters. Driving miles just to take one or two photos.

    I spent my early years of photography with an apsc dslr & cheaper lenses. Once I worked out what sort of photography interests me the most. I've then upgraded bodies & lenses with the times. Full frame mirrorless is where I'm at now. I'm definitely more cautious with what I buy as I've made impulse buys & regretted it. You really have to sit back and question, how often will I use it? Will it allow me to get the results I'm personally satisfied with? Buying gear can be fun & exciting but its a long term investment.

I updated my equipment to Nikon D850 standard from Nikon D300 when the camera broke down. Also I like to get a AFS 400mmF2.8 E FL VR. I currently use a D800E with a AFS 60mmF2.8 Macro ( got the lens for the D300). I also got a D700 when the D300 broke down.

    EVF definitely. I use Olympus Pen models from the E PL 1 and an 8 model. I have an add on EVF on my wife's 5 and my 8, I just found and ordered one for my e pl 1 or I was going to sell the two 1s that I have. For them I have a cup like device I ordered to hold against the touch screen. It was mildly effective but a real pain to use. Today I used the ! and anything with the light behind the subject was difficult to position the subject.

    You neglected to mention a stealth move you can use with the EVF, that being using it’s tilting level abilities, while the camera is in a vertical position, to have you seeming to be focusing on a subject in a direction other than the actual subject. If they’re close enough and staring at your hand’s, they might get a clue as to what you’re doing, but with the very compact pancakes I use for street shooting, the quickness of the shot, and the fact that most people aren’t drawn to someone seeming to be photographing something other than them usually keeps you as hidden as you need to be for the task at hand...., just sayin’

    This is so true. Back in the days when I used a film camera, I just had one camera body, one 50mm lens, and it was all I needed. I never had to wonder about whether it was the right lens or the right camera body. Film cameras had reached a level of maturity that you never felt like you'd need an upgrade if you wanted to stick with film. Then came digital cameras, and for a long time there were huge differences in quality between different pieces of gear: some lenses had really ugly chromatic aberration, some sensors had limited dynamic range, some had very slow auto-focus... so it made sense to get a bit obsessed over gear to make sure you'd source good quality stuff that wouldn't make the experience of taking pictures more frustrating than it needed to be. But since a couple of years back, digital cameras have all reached such a level of quality that there's no point obsessing anymore. They're all very good. Heck, some are way too advanced for what most people need them for, even. Sure there's still differences but you're better off just figuring out practical stuff like whether it rains a lot where you live and might need weather sealing, or if you have a bad back and need for your camera to be lightweight, rather than obsessing over IQ or advanced features. Just get a system that works for your lifestyle, and stick with it. Get to known it fully. The next shiny thing isn't going to make enough of a difference to require any upgrading. You're set for many many years to come.

    @markdsimpson8915 Před rokem

    Where did shooting from LCD screens come from? Phones. What did digital camera manufacturers do? Eliminated a cost. Controlling color to a standard is a distinguishing skill of pros. It starts with the camera (as a color capture source). As you point out an EVF eliminates ambient light from distorting the image of the subject. Pros color calibrate to the image source. Pros in the post processing world carefully control ambient room light. Most consumer monitors for photography have a calibration to a color space and a predefined color mode that displays it. That does 90% of color calibration. Commercial printers have profiles calibrated to the source which is worthless if the post processing skipped that step. Saw a video the other day where the complaint was smartphones were taking over photography. They certainly are for a huge swath of the demand for photographs. What was left out of the complaint was the demand for authenticity. Did the author of the photograph actually take the picture? What is the purpose? Accurate rendering of what anyone would see or color graded/embellished. Or was the whole project begun on the internet? Someone else's photography was used and then the "art" created. Throwing a few sliders around is not art. I am not a pro. My photography is of my family and I want a realistic rendering of people and events. Nature is not saturated colors in most circumstances. I've spent more than a little time and money trying to get that photographic result. The famous photos I appreciate are are purposely composed and shot with realistic color or black and white because color is a distraction. Family, my family, is about chaos and passings thru life. Agree with all of your points. Insightful video. Thanks.

    I've spent a lot on my fuji cameras and lenses, but honestly I don't regret it one bit. I did do a bit of good research first, and I absolutely agree with what you're saying. Of course I could wonder if sony or panasonic is better at this or that, but I know my fuji hits most of my needs and I'm content sticking with it for a long while. Sometimes you mostly know what you want and just need to isolate what it is. My issue is more "what focal lengths do i prefer in a prime" and there has been no way for me to gauge that except trying different focal length lenses.... But I have sold and bought a few and ultimately feel i am pretty happy with a select few... OO

    Hello and thx for the Video, I had both lenses and sold the Panasonic very soon because of the ultra slow and pumping AF, I think the reason for that is the fact that the Panasonic Lens is a not IF lens, for focusing the tube moves in and out like lenses in the 80th… even the MK2 has same construction. On the other hand the Olympus 25mm has a very fast AF, is sharp enough at 1.8 and super sharp at 4.0 and 5.6 across the frame. I had the Lumix 25mm 1.7 and 1.4 too, but both are not that good as my Olympus. And I have just Lumix Cameras and like the Lumix lenses very much, but at 25mm they loose in my eyes. Greetings From Martin

    Would this lens work with extension rings for close-ups of flowers and other natural subjects? I've been thinking that I need something faster than my Olympus ED 14-42 EZ, which at best is f3.5. So I'm wondering if the Fujian would be a cheap alternative to an Olympus or Panasonic prime lens for this sort of work. Btw, the link you gave is not to this lens.
