    It’s been almost 3 years. I’d love to see another “What’s in my camera bag? Update”, Even after all this time, yours is was of the best channels out there.

      This is absolutely 100% correct. I'd rather have quality videos every couple of months instead of 1 video a week w/ 1 out of 10 being quality.

    Yay! A new Michromatic show!!! Great update to your bag and lens lineup!! Since you ask: I currently carry an E-M10 ii, typically with kit 14-40mm ED attached. I also have a Pentax SMD 50mm F2 with k-mount adapter and a Vivitar 28mm f 1.8 (also K-mount). I also carry the Fujian 35mm with c-mount adapter. I have one Fotga slim fader variable ND filter that fits both the K-mount lenses. I keep an extra battery, a lens-pen, a small table-top tripod, and an extra SD card. My bag is the Lowepro Street and Field Accessory bag, that I've added a strap and handle to. It is small and compact (about the same size as your new bag). Love it!! BTW, your show is a big inspiration for me, so I hope you add more new episodes!!!

      hi, I am new, if we put Pentax 50mm on m43 camera, it will become 100mm, x2 crop factor, is that correct? Thanks.

    This was refreshing. I always feel like I'm the only shooter NOT walking around with a giant bag of gear.
    I use an army surplus canteen pouch on a shoulder strap for all my gear. Inside is an E-PL6, 17mm lens, 45mm lens, EVF4, holga lens, an ND filter and a circular polarizing filter.

    more than just "what's in your bag", I love the second part of the question: "and how does that suit your photography style"? - I'm just coming back to photography after a long time away. I loved SLR and have been slow to adopt this digital trend ;) So my bag has the Pen F - because I love knobs and buttons and manual adjustments. I'm exploring the M.Zukio 45mm 1.8, and a 12-50mm zoom -- so that I have a good range for landscape, some nature and street, and also a fast bright prime for street and candid moments.

    Glad to see you back, I've enjoyed your videos and your Instagram. I have an E-M10 with Panasonic 25mm 1.8 and the Olympus 45mm 1.8. I also carry my OM10 with the 50mm 1.8. I have a dumb adaptor I sometimes use the 50mm on the E-M10. I just can't justify the expense on the metabones adapter. The bag I use is the Lowepro event messenger.

    I decided to start off gradually so I went with a used GX-1 body (with only 600 cycles of use) for $98 and a lot of manual glass I bought on eBay. I got very lucky with the lenses. I went with Canon FD to M4/3 adapters as well as one Chinese speed booster (.71x) that's proven a good buy...at only $80. My typical lens load-out includes the Canon 28mm f2.0, Canon 50mm f1.4 (silver filter ring version) and Canon 135mm f2.5. I have plenty of other lenses from Takumars, Hexanons, Nikons, Jupiters to Helios, etc. But the Canon's are good all-arounders for me and I can use the one speed booster across all three. The 135mm is very sharp and even good wide open. The 28mm was an absolute steal...and the 50mm one of my favorite 50's...although my Helios and Hexanon's (f1.4, f1.7) are also terrific. My Jupiter-8 is best for compact street shooting....and it looks very cool on a black GX-1 body.
    If you are trying to find a decent Jupiters & Helios, I used the following sources:

    - Jupiter-8 50mm (sn#581xxxx); Leica/M39 mount; f:2.0; 40.5mm filter size, $10.53+$15.00(shipping)

    I was actually considering this camera and this bag when I made the decision to switch away from Nikon.
    Instead I ended up going with the Fujifilm X-T1 and paired that with the Fujinon 18-135mm f3.5-5.6 LM OIS WR lens and the Fujinon 27mm f2.8 pancake lens, which is my daily walk around lens.
    Then for my bag, I have 7 currently. But the one I use as my EDC bag is the Prince Street messenger bag by ONA.

    In my camera bag, I use a "Backpackers" branded bag. Though I have recently purchased a OMP day pack for my camera gear, I find the simple shoulder strap bag to be my go-to bag. Depending on circumstances, I will use either my Vivitar 70-210mm f4.5 (K-Mount) or my Pentax 100-300mm f/4.7 (K-mount) with a K-Micro 4/3s adaptor. But normally, my "Go-To" lenses include the Pentax Takumar 50mm f/2, Sigma 28mm f2.8, two 49mm Olympus colour filters (Yellow and Orange), spare batteries and memory cards, lens pen, cloth, notebook and LED light, my Olympus Pen E-PM1, and the Olympus EVF (4th gen).

    I'm rolling with a jet black E-P5 with the LB-EP5 grip from Fotga. I use (with an adapter) a Minolta 58mm 1.2. The grip helps compensate for all of the weight in the front. For sports, I use a Canon FD "beercan" 70-210 F4. I bought the E-P5 last year for $200 open box from eBay. The total cost I spent for my gear is around $300.

    • @Michromatic
      @Michromatic  Před 8 lety

      That's a great kit for $300. I've still got my E-P5 (in fact, I used it to record the unbagging), great little camera.
      That 70-210 is a beast!

  • @Callsigngrizzly
    @Callsigngrizzly Před 8 lety

    I tend to go out with one of two set ups. If I'm just out and about for the day, with no direct intention of shooting, I carry my Lowepro Passport Sling with an EM5mk2, the olympus 25 1.8, the panasonic 14mm 2.5, and sometimes the Olympus 60mm 2.8 macro. Between the camera and those two lenses I still have enough room to carry a waterbottle and other small odds and ends, even a sweatshirt if I really needed to.
    If I'm going out specifically to shoot, or just feel like "keeping me eyes on" a bit more I'll go out with my Domke F2 filled with my Pentax K1, and old Sigma 24mm Superwide Macro from like the late 90s i think, and the Pentax FA 35mm F2. The third lens is either the Pentax FA 50mm 1.7, the DFA 50mm 2.8 Macro, or the Helios 44-2 58mm F2 which is fantastic for portraits. Thats usually my set up. If I'm shooting an event I'll carry the DFA 28-105 3.5-5.6 so I can keep one versatile lens on and back it up with the 35mm and a 50mm for low light.
    I'm shooting portraits or specifically macro I'll bring the Helios and the Pentax DFA 100mm 2.8 macro as they work fantastically for that purpose.
    I have a few more random lenses that i've accumulated which I'll sometimes sub out if I want a challange or if I need a specific purpose filled but I tend to stick with the 24-35-50mm combo most of the time!

    Awesome videos! I actually have the Domke F-6 bag as sort of a "purse". I keep my Panasonic GH4 with the Voigtlander 17.5/0.95 pretty much glued to it along with my Leica M2 with a Voigtlander 35/1.4. Then there's my Canon FD 50mm with the m43 adaptor and some accessories. I keep it simple since I only every use 35mm lenses for street photography!

    thanks for sharing! I am shooting with 2 cameras and a few lenses:
    GX8 - mainly the 12-40 pro on there
    GX80/85 - with 7.5 fisheye, 15/1.7, 25/1.4, 45/2.8 macro (Leica trio)
    As you can probably tell from the line up, I am shooting pretty much everything except distant subjects close up. Love how compact M43 is!

  • @Wyllies11
    @Wyllies11 Před 8 lety

    I actually have 2 bags a bigger domke and a smaller one (the model numbers escape me at the moment). In the larger bag I have my "art" kit which are all my primes. The Zeiss ZF f1.4 trilogy (35, 50, and 85), an old Nippon Kogaku 24mm f2.8, a Tokina AT-X Pro 17mm f3.5, a Nikkor Micro 105mm f2.8, an old AIS Nikkor 135 f2.8, and another old AI series IF ED 300mm f4.5. I bed all of these down with my Fuji XT-1 and a metabones for F lens to X mount camera.
    My other bag is my sport kit as its all AF zooms. In it are the 3 Nikon "dragon" D series lenses; the 20-35 f2.8, the 35-70 f2.8, and the 80-200 f2.8 (the second gen two touch version). All these go together with my Nikon D700. I am a fan of old shit apparently. Great vid I always enjoy seeing my favorite youtube photogs and what they shoot with/ carry with them.

    • @Michromatic
      @Michromatic  Před 6 lety

      I don't carry spare batteries or memory cards. I'm a pretty conservative shooter with a relatively high keeper rate -- which just means I don't go through batteries and memory cards in a single day, so no need to carry spares. I have a tripod, but really only break it out for night photography. Stabilization in my camera is good enough for any daytime shots.

    Nice update. I just got the Lowepro Event Messenger 100 and though it's small and compact, it hold my E-PL6, Oly 50mm 1.8, Vivitar 28mm 2.8, Sigma 19mm 2.8, and both kit lenses very well. I have the Oly 35mm 2.8 on the so way so I think the kit lenses will get demoted. Plan to do a video soon.

      +Michromatic Sure is. You got me hooked on the OM lenses! From reviews I've read, it's not terribly sharp wide open on the edges, but I got it at auction for under $40 shipped, so I thought that was a good value to at least check it out. Also, I haven't messed with any 35mm lenses on m43 but I enjoy the 28mm focal distance on my Vivitar FD lens.

      @Michromatic  Před 8 lety +1

      You don't get a Chrome bag because you're cool, you're cool because you get a Chrome bag.
      Allegedly.
      When I was looking for a camera bag a couple of years ago, I first bought a Chrome Niko Sling. I ended up returning it very quickly. It's not as well-made as their traditional bags but was still priced high. The Domke appealed to me next, and didn't let me down. Nice build, and reasonably priced (especially if you can catch them on Amazon when on sale).

    I luuuuuuuuuuuv my EM5-II, it's the exact same size as my old Nikon FE SLR so you have that fun feel like you're on an old film camera.
    I notice that you have a speed boosted 50mm f/1.4 and a 100mm f/2.8. You could just pull the speedbooster off the 50mm and basically have the same 35mm eq. focal length and DoF of the 100mm. Then you could pare down the weight by 1 more lens (although it's not as fun as having more lenses.

    • @Michromatic
      @Michromatic  Před 8 lety

      The 100/2.8, when on a Speed Booster, is equivalent to 140mm, so still longer than a 50mm on a standard adapter. Plus the other benefits of a Speed Booster (added light, improved sharpness).

    Very neat. I use almost exactly the same equivalent with three rangefinder lenses on the A7II A 35mm, 75mm and I just got a 135mm again, all manual :)
    But a lot of the times I like 50mm as well (maybe I could just switch on APS-C with the 35mm)
    Maybe if you add in a normal OM-m43 adapter so you can also have that little extra reach or in-between focal length if you need to, but simpler = better.

    • @Michromatic
      @Michromatic  Před 8 lety

      Yeah, I thought that this trio would effectively give me 6 different focal lengths, but in reality I almost never bring the standard OM adapter since I got the Speed Booster. When I do use the standard adapter, it's on the 24/2.8 for that 50mm view :)

    • @RyanHasvold
      @RyanHasvold Před 8 lety

      +Michromatic interesting, is IBIS the main differentiator for you? I'm trying to figure out if the increased ISO performance of the a6000 would offset the shutter speed advantages of the stabilization. Guessing it depends most on whether the subject is moving, right?

    • @Michromatic
      @Michromatic  Před 8 lety

      > ...interesting, is IBIS the main differentiator for you?
      Yes, at least on paper -- I haven't used Sony's cameras extensively so I'm not sure if there are other advantages / weaknesses in handling and functionality that would sway me. But on paper, IBIS is the missing piece.
      Part of it is for stability during exposure. ISO performance can make up some of that, sure. But my main reason for wanting IBIS is for improved manual focus.
      I use magnification in the live preview to nail manual focus. When you're magnified 10x, any motion in the camera makes it difficult to nail focus. With image stabilization, the 10x magnified view is also stabilized (at least on Olympus cameras) and it makes manual focus a breeze.

    Ive gone with a similar setup - I still use the old Domke F-5XB, and even though I carry only 3 lenses, when I eventually upgrade to a new camera Ill be carrying two cams in it.
    Aside from my GM1, some polarising filters, spare batteries and a Lenspen, I pack the Oly 25 f/1.8 and the Panny 42.5 f/1.7, as well as the super sharp super tiny 12-32 Panny kit lens. I'd like to replace the latter with a faster wide prime, and am torn between the 15mm Panaleica, or just spending a little extra for the metabones and grabbing some legacy primes. That speed booster is so pricy though. :(

      Check out the Lens Turbo II. It seems to do pretty well in image quality tests, and it's much cheaper than the Metabones.
      I like that 12-32mm, though. I got one with my GM5 and was pretty impressed with it on a recent trip to Japan.

    I would say the Leica/Panasonic lenses are better, on other hand they are better on Panasonic body - they have faster AF etc. Anyway its really taste option.
    In my bag is GX7 + Panasonic 20mm f1.7 mk2 (which is compromise between Leica 15mm and Leica 25mm) + Panasonic 45-150 f4/5.6 + polarised filters. My shoots are 90% JPEGs.

    Ooooh been thinking of buying this camera all day, with the pancake zoom to replace my ageing Fuji X10, so a timely watch. If I am carrying a main camera I also carry a zoom compact. The thinking is that this Olympus can do this job and also replace my Nikon D7100 for nature at the other end if i buy a longer lens. My Nikon has been reduced to zoo trips since I got a Leica X113 as my main street camera. I only carry one main camera as i only use one compartment in my ONA Brixton, the rest is usual handbag junk like makeup umbrella tablet phone etc. I only use primes now with my serious camera, if I want a second lens i put it in a CCS padded bag and throw it on top of my junk. So I would use this camera with zoom in a padded bag next to my Leica then, at the Zoo the Micro 4/3 would move into the main compartment with a long lens and my Olympus tough TG-3 would move to the padded bag to provide the short zoom. I also like the idea of using my Leica and Nikon primes with the adaptor ;-)

    • @vicibox
      @vicibox Před 6 lety

      Gosh forgot I watched this a year ago and commented. How did I turn out? I bought a used Panasonic GX7 to complement my Leica X113 with a 14-140 to replace my Nikon on trips and to try out the MFT system. Well it blew me away. So I bought 17mm f1.8 and 45mm f1.8 Olympus primes for my new camera and the whole Nikon thing was redundant; I added the panasonic 25mm f1.7 as it was so cheap and sold all my modern Nikon just keeping my FM2n and 3 Nikkor D primes for film use when I feel like a nostalgia trip. Nothing really gives better images than my Leica X113 but I have to admit I prefer using the GX7 which gives it a run for its money quality wise. When Panasonic brings all its models up to their latest spec next year I will probably upgrade to either a new Panasonic or Olympus 20MP body; I will assess them at that time. The primes are so sharp that they will easily take a useable 300% crop so I am finding that assigning a x2 digital zoom to a function button gives me the equivalent of 35-70mm, 50-100mm & 90-180mm at f1.8 without using a zoom; my 14-140mm is good for holiday trips but rarely gets a run out now. I just like using primes. So my usual day bag has either a Leica X113 or my GX7 with a prime depending on needs and my TG-3 to provide a zoom. I can always throw a second lens in a padded bag on top if I think I may need one. I am getting fantastic pictures and it is all so light; I dont miss DSLRs at all ;-)

      Absolutely, I've considered it. I really like the simplicity of those film cameras, and like the idea of getting original angles of view through my lenses. @Michromatic  Před 8 lety

      I got a "magnet retrofit" kit from this website: www.fighterdesignusa.com/magnetic-retrofit-kits/
      It won't ruin your bag -- they just attach to the velcro, and come off easy when you want them to. The magnets are pretty good, but don't cover up the bag's velcro entirely, so there is still some residual velcro connection. Largely, though, they've made the bag much quieter in operation.

I really like the bokeh effect from those lens, so my question is, will i be able to get the same bokeh with the micro 4/3? i´m thinking about going with the Olympus EM5 because of the size of the camera.
    Sorry if i made some mistakes, english is not my native language.

    • @Michromatic
      @Michromatic  Před 8 lety

      The answer to that question is complicated. Generally speaking, a Micro 4/3 camera will give you less bokeh than an APS-C camera like the D7000, but it all depends on the lenses you're using, and the distance between the camera, the subject, and the background.

      Honestly, my experience with the Helios was disappointing. Even though it is in visually excellent condition, the focus throw and the aperture operation feel a bit janky, which has made it less satisfying to shoot with. I haven't used it much.
      The OM 100/2.8, however, is an excellent bit of glass. Pretty strong chromatic aberration, but it's correctable and otherwise the lens performs very well, even at f/2.8.

      No problems. Linear vs. circular polarizers don't care what lens you have, only what type of camera. And with mirrorless cameras, you can use either type.
      If you use a DSLR with a mirror box, that's when you need to use a circular polarizer. If you don't have a mirror box in the camera, then it doesn't matter.

    Unfortunately going for an expensive metabone adapter limits your options regarding Old manual lenses to a single brand. So far I have An Olympus 50mm f1.8 and a Canon 28mm F2 (on the OM-1n and the AE1 Program) but I can't make my mind about which brand I'd like to go with and keep using el cheapo Chinese adapter. the problem is that they don't seem to be able to correctly focus and there is always a tiny bit of fogginess in the picture I take. I fear this problem could not go away with an expensive metabone which is what refrains me.
    Overall you are using pretty long lenses as a kit with just the 24mm covering the common 35mm focal and missing your once beloved true 50mm focal completely.
    I was curious about your old set-up and hoped you could do a review of the 75mm any time soon.

    • @Michromatic
      @Michromatic  Před 8 lety

      If you have focus problems and fogginess, a Speed Booster will likely not solve the problems. As for mixing lens mounts, some people will get a Speed Booster for Canon EOS, which has a shorter flange distance than most mounts. Then you can use an OM -> EOS adapter to use an OM lens on it.

      It's always a 50mm lens. Crop applies regardless of what the lens was originally built for. czcams.com/video/oyijtQNl824/video.html

      Many thanks. I found your channel like 2 weeks ago, loving it ever since. Like others said, please do more when you have time!

    +Michromatic what did you do with your AF Olympus lenses? Did you sell them all?

    • @Michromatic
      @Michromatic  Před 8 lety

      I sold some of them, and kept others. I used autofocus lenses while in Japan earlier this year just to keep up with the pace of the city, but the kit in this video is what I have with me most of the time these days.

    Awesome vid, is your cat a bluepoint siamese?

    • @Michromatic
      @Michromatic  Před 8 lety

      We got her from a shelter that said she's a bluepoint snowshoe. I did a bit of online digging, and IMO she shares some color with that breed, but doesn't totally look like it. I later found the burmese cat breed, which I think she seems to be more like, both in looks and behavior.
      So probably she is some mix of bluepoint, siamese, burmese, etc.

    Why dont you use a dumb focal reducer for the manual lenses.?

    • @Michromatic
      @Michromatic  Před 8 lety

      The Metabones for OM is a dumb adapter -- no electronic connections.

    how many batteries do you carry on a shoot

    • @Michromatic
      @Michromatic  Před 8 lety

      Just what's in the camera. I'm not a rapid shooter -- a busy day for me is 200 frames, and the camera can do that easy without reloading the battery. I'm more of a sniper than a machine gunner, and I typically turn the camera off/on in between shots.

    Hello! Not sure if this will get seen here on an older video but it's worth a shot, I was hoping you could tell me what you're using to cover the Velcro on your F-5XA? I have just ordered the same bag and am expecting to want to reduce the ripping noise as soon as it arrives! It looks like you're using something with magnets, but I've had a lot of trouble finding something that will work. Hope you see this, very interested in your response :)

    Do you use lens hoods with your lenses?

    • @Michromatic
      @Michromatic  Před 8 lety

      Naw, too much bulk / hassle for too little benefit, for my tastes.
