Rockhounding in January!? Finding agates, jasper, petrified wood and more in Buffalo Gap!
Me and my friend Nick took advantage of a beautiful, late January day to do some rockhounding in Western South Dakota’s Buffalo Gap National Grassland!
Looking for legendary Fairburn Agates, as well as a handful of other types of agates, jasper, petrified wood, and one of my personal favorites… prairie agates!
It was an awesome day spent on the rocks in some goregeous weather for anytime of year, let alone winter! When we get back to the shop we review our finds and select a few pieces to cut on our lapidary saw! I hope you enjoy the video!

zhlédnutí 2,4KPřed 6 měsíci
Well CZcams, another box came in from a member of ‘The Boneyard’ on Facebook! This one contained several slabs of ‘Indian Paint Stone’ which can no longer be collected due to its location in Death Valley National Park. Today we open this package up and create some beautiful cabochons out of this rare material! #agate #gemstone #lapidary #lapidaryarts #lapidarymachine #polishing #rockhound #rock...
Cutting Mexican Agate Rough!
zhlédnutí 951Před 7 měsíci
Hello CZcams! I apologize that it has taken me so long to get another video up! I had sinus surgery not too long ago and then an illness made its rounds through my house, the joys of having kids 😂… Anyway,I hope to get on a more regular schedule soon! In this video we cut some slabs from some Mexican agate rough I bought in a Facebook group I belong too. I’ll probably end up snagging more of th...
Slabbing & Cabbing a beautiful chunk of mahogany Obsidian! || #ObsidianWeek
zhlédnutí 9KPřed 7 měsíci
Hey friends, Not long ago I had seen a post from @DonohueLabs and @WorldofRockhounds regarding #ObsidianWeek for 2023! I had a brief sinus surgery this past week but am feeling better and was able to get my footage together before the week ended and get this posted! We will blame any errors on the last of the pain meds 😅 In this video we slab some different obsidian specimens and end up mak...
Cutting incredible Oregon Thundereggs, polishing our favorite!
zhlédnutí 3,4KPřed 8 měsíci
I recently grabbed a box of rough Oregon Thundereggs from ‘Dragons Den Minerals’ on Etsy. You can find them here: www.etsy.com/shop/DragonsDenMinerals I figured why not cut a few on my Highland Park HT10 and see what these cool little agates are all about. None of the ones we cut in this video were remotely the same and we uncovered some awesome features with agate banding, water level bands, m...
More cutting less talking
The first rock you cut has an ocean in it. How cool!
I just found your channel 😊. And ohhhh my goodness!! Absolutely gorgeous finds!! And I haven’t even watched it all the way through, lol 😂 I’m only 3:15 into the video. A lot of oooh’s and awes! And did he just lick the rocks!?! 😂🤣😂🤣 And some more squealing over the rocks. And then you cut some…😳🥺😢🥺🥰🥰🥹 absolutely stunning!! I love your video and I’m looking forward to seeing more. 😊 May you and your family have a blessed day ✌️🫶😃
Glad you enjoyed!
That’s a beauty! ❤
Thanks, I had fun on the tail end of your live last night!
@@CedarStoneCreations thanks! I was happy to see you 😊
That will make some cool cabs!
Definitely! I’ll have to get some slabs
Thanks for the video views, I been missing the area since heading south for winter. One of my best tips on finding the fairburns is to get out there right after rains or on these nice days right after heavy snow melt. That’s what moves the rocks around the most and exposes new ones coming out of “the band” as we call it. Gotta be quick, as there are many of the top hunters just waiting for the rain drops to stop, or the snow to melt. Some of us can’t even wait that long. Even then, they can be anywhere at anytime, even next to fresh footprints. 💪🕵🏻♂️ Best luck!
Thanks dude, for sure I love getting out after snow melt and right after big thunderstorms in the spring! Haven’t had amazing luck but I’ve found a few and I’m still new. People don’t realize the effort that needs to be put in to find some of these things. ‘Time in the boots’ like you said in your video.
So pretty
Definitely, I was surprised 😲
@@CedarStoneCreations what is it called when? Is it a blue agate or something
@@mariahc6888 this is a thunderegg from Succor Creek, Oregon.
My fatass thought the Rock was a chunk of brownies💀💀
Very, very hard brownies! 😅
Wow Dude... I wasn't expecting that. Thats a glorious piece .
I wasn’t either, I’ve cut a few of these before and the ones that have been cool usually have a lot of signs on the outside… this one just looked like nothing. I honestly was expecting a dud!
I don't know if that breakdown was hard enough for this agate.
🤘🏼🪨
Incredible contrast in this! That turned out great.
Thanks dude, hopefully we can get out together soon!
My prediction: stone Yooo I was right
Good call! 👍🏻
That's a Ninja Turtle Shell!
I can see that!
No safety measures taken in this video. This video should be taken down because someone is going to attempt what you are doing and cut their fingers off.
See comment below, you can touch a continuous rim diamond blade with your fingers and it will not cut you… it is ‘grinding’ through the rock vs cutting it. The surface of the blade is covered with diamonds, it is not sharp.
@@CedarStoneCreations your viewers are still going to harm themselves because of your lack of safety
Someone could get hurt if they used completely different and inappropriate tools not pictured in this video. The most you need here is eye and maybe ear protection.
@@EvanLudesWeatherNatureVideo have you ever seen someone get their hand snatched by a saw blade? I have and that guy no longer has a hand.
@@David-xv6yeon a continuous diamond blade on a small wet tile saw? Or something else?
Forbidden potato.
Indeed!
You should make some sort of jig or apparatus to hold that rock so you don't cut your fingers off...
With a diamond blade like this you won’t cut yourself, it is essentially grinding through the rock vs cutting it. You can touch the blade with your fingers.
@@CedarStoneCreations look I want to see that video of you running your fingers through a spinning diamond saw blade... that would definitely be worthy of a SUBSCRIPTION... LOL
@@bucktheplumber4636 when I do the next episode I’ll touch the blade for you 👍🏻
It's a potato!
Kinda looks like one! I was just shocked there weren’t features in there with all those windows.
Lol its a 🥔 😂😅😂
For sure!
Ur nails dude
The corners and stuff are always getting sanded off on the flat lap working stones 😅
Where do you pick up the setting?! I have been looking around at a few options.
Fire Mountain Gems is where I order most of my supplies.
That’s awesome!
Thanks!
Digging with some snow here and there is an added layer of difficulty for sure since you know that ground is frozen. That place is amazing! Barely into the start and I can’t resist making this comment before it’s over haha. 🤘
Thanks for watching my friend, I’m not actually sure if our ground has frozen this winter. We got cold and went to mud season lol
Wowwowwowwowwow!
Definitely a cool rock!
Great location. I visited SD 40 years ago, and we stopped at Wall and the Badlands. I would love to go back and rockhound one day. Thanks for taking us along. Really nice finds. Enjoyed seeing them cut open, too.
If you ever make it back down this way, let me know!
Really enjoyed the journey! The landscapes are beautiful and it was fascinating to see the petrified wood
Thanks 🙏! I’ll be visiting a spot specifically for some petrified wood when I get another nice day in the future.
I love watching your videos makes me miss LA so much. #churchschicken
I guessing you mean Louisiana if you’re missing Chruch’s haha. I try to sneak a visit in everytime I’m down in Texas.
Man... Thats some tasty looking Bubblegum !!
I have really bad luck with most of them so I usually leave them alone as the husk is cooler than the inside… however, these ones with a dark skin always seem to hide cool banding and features!
That turned out great... congrats!
Thanks John, this is the one that was buried in the ice in the hounding video!
Enjoyed watching your adventure and the collection of 'goodies' you (and the stranger) found. And who can resist a nice cutting and slabbing of said rocks.... Not me , that is for sure!
Thanks John! Any day spent outside is a good one much less if it happens to be with rocks 🪨!
Great finds. Nice to see them cut ! The last piece of banded chert is amazing looking. Thanks for taking us along and for sharing👍
Thanks! How could I not with that weather in January? 😂 glad you enjoyed, there is definitely some very cool chert out there.
Niiiiiice! Is that self-collected? I grew up in MN, LSAs are in my blood 🥰
This one was found by a farmer in NW IA and given to me! Found while tilling a field last spring!
@@CedarStoneCreations Sweet!! What a find and what a gift!
Super lindos!
Thanks Alé!
Is that an Ameritool flat lap? It looks like mine. Sweet it is MADE IN REDDING, CA. And use your under sid of your wrist to wipe off the stone, especially soft stones.
Sure is, thanks for the tip! 🙏
@@CedarStoneCreations I am almost on my second set of soft pads for it.
Where do you get the diamond extender fluid? I haven't seen that before!

Hello, I'm new to your channel. Nice work! Those are gorgeous rocks! Do you know if they come in smaller size? Like tumble size rocks? Also, how much am I looking at to buy a slab machine like yours? Thanks in advance!
Hello, when I ordered these they came from pieces that were roughly 3-4 lbs all the way down to some large tumble sized pieces. This saw is the Highland Park HT10, you can pick one up for just under $1500 shipped. I got lucky and found a gently used one on Facebook for under 1k a couple hours away from me!
@CedarStoneCreations Awesome. Thanks for the reply
Beautiful material 🤩
It is pretty cool stuff!
The Indian paint stone is so beautiful ! Your end results are amazing👍
Thanks! It was interesting to work with.
WOW❤
Thanks for watching Jeannette!
Oi amigo, aqui é Alê do Brasil....
Hello! 👋
Nice Job, Young Man.
Thanks!
Out of all the Obsidian is Mahogany-it holds dear to my Heart, Soul, Spirit because it REMINDS ME OF MY POPS WHO WENT ON TO THE OTHER SIDE WHENN I WAS 13yrs Old. We Did a Lot Of Wood working with Mahogany when growing up in Guam as a Kid. But I do like all the other Obsidians!!!
Very cool stuff for sure! I plan to snag some more after working with it for this challenge.
I like the red one
All of them have pretty cool colors, but there is definitely something special about that vibrant red one!
Good video. I usually rough out the stone by hand on my flat lap. I still get dinged sometimes on the fingers but I seem to have more control with a bigger piece. I use the dobb stick for finishing on the cab.softer stones need more finesse and more time but the shine is worth it
For sure! Softer stuff has definitely taken me some time, especially since I learned working agates.
Beautiful! You do a great job!
Thank you so much! 😊
Very cool material
Very much so! Just roughed out a bunch of cabs from a few of these slabs and I’m pretty excited to work on them!
I’ll check it out!
Beautiful!
Thank you! Cheers!
