What Happened to the San Francisco Soccer Startup?
Like us on Facebook: TouchbackThe
Follow on X: TouchbackThe
This is the story of the San Francisco Deltas, Northern California’s Most Mercurial Soccer Team.
The San Francisco Deltas will forever be in the record books as the last champion of the second incarnation of the Northern American Soccer League and probably as the NASL as a whole. Their appearance in the Soccer Bowl was surprising. Not much was expected from an expansion club which arrived on the scene as the league was checking out.
Out of the dying embers of the NASL emerged a soccer Icarus who flew high, won it all, and then sank to the bottom of the sea due to a combination of cluelessness and Silicon Valley hubris. They could have given the Bay Area a true alternative to the San Jose Earthquakes. A team for San Francisco proper. Instead, they got a confusing name and logo that adorns a championship banner which has nowhere to hang and may not actually exist.
It took some time but everything came into place for the team. The Deltas had filled out their playing squad, featuring a lot of players either from Canada or having played there. Additionally, the NASL had cobbled things together to get a season up and running. All that was left to do was play some games.
Unfortunately, things did not go well for San Francisco's soccer startup. Attendance was poor, and no one knew the team existed. The ownership was clueless what it was doing and blamed the fans.
There was one thing the franchise had going for it...winning. The Deltas were actually pretty good. They won the regular and would advance to the NASL Playoffs.
All this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the San Francisco Deltas. Their story is so wild that it could only be true.

I will say that the SF Deltas at least played at a decent venue in Kezar Stadium & not sharing Oracle Park with the Giants because they would have faced the same issues that NYCFC of MLS currently face when trying to play soccer at an MLB ballpark. However the AI ticketing idea was terrible along with the high ticket prices & very poor marketing. Then going after the same fans who have supported the club since day one was another terrible look & discouraged future ones from supporting the club that would have kept the club alive. The SF Deltas story is a cautionary tale of how not to run a soccer club.

I think SF Deltas' endgame was pretty clear from the get-go - they wanted their "startup" to be purchased by some other person/group like it was a tech startup and for them to turn a profit from from the sale. But because they failed to attract that sugar daddy, the startup failed. Professional sports and "startups" don't really go together. Look at the latest incarnation of the Arena Football League, for example. Or helmet manufacturers like Xenith and Vicis. FWIW, The United Football League exists only because it's half-owned by one of its broadcast partners, while the rest is owned by a capital-management group, with Dwayne Johnson and Dany Garcia serving as little more than figureheads.

Let me explain to you why Kezar was perfect for the location of the Deltas. Fan experience was excellent, much better than Earthquakes. Fans could walk to the stadium, get a drink and food nearby. Earthquake stadium is at the airport, fans can't walk to it, traffic is impossible for weeknight matches. All your marketing whining is at the margins.

I went to a handful of Deltas matches during their single season, including the opener and championship. Branding (which I never understood the hate for) and Silicon Valley hubris aside, they were fun! FWIW, the team also paid for some upgrades to Kezar Stadium (like the sound system and installation of old Candlestick Park seats). SF City FC matches, which you mentioned, have been fun in the years since, though! They also do a lot of really cool designs with kits, merch, etc.. A shame that their following is still pretty small (especially when compared with, say, Oakland Roots SC across the Bay.

Most of Rugby franchises unfortunately are short sighted. Little care is taken into growing the game, making it more competitive instead franchises look to link with other big franchises with the hope it will become a success. We need a collaboration of highly experienced Rugby individuals and highly experienced business men, but only a businessman who wants the game to grow and flourish. Most club Rugby is in a frail state unless it’s in France, of the US MLR sells itself to another league it will be the worst thing they could do, let the domestic league in the US build it’s own rivalry within its own nation rather than sell your soul to a league which is short sighted and a dreadful look for Rugby

Raleigh seems like an obvious choice for a UFL team. They've been trying hard to expand beyond the one major pro team they have right now and there is a massive push for a MLB team. Most Carolinians, given the chance, would tune into a new, exciting football team as opposed to dealing with a team owned by David Tepper. Given the right ownership, a Raleigh (or Durham) based team would do wonders. That being said, there isn't a suitable venue for a team to draw 10-15k fans outside of WakeMed Park (Cary). Perhaps they host it at Okelly-Riddick Stadium on the campus of NC Central?

Kansas with less population then Missouri, has star bonds to spend to get both the Royals and Cheifs to Move over state lines, its amazing they can afford to spend money. But its ok Missouri drivers have been paying for Kansas Highway systems on the Toll roads for years Wile Kansas get mo business to change states. But then Kansas Citys 1% earnings tax hasn't helped kansas city grow any, its hurt both Kansas citys and St louis development and growth. Both kansas city and St louis have historic districts that would grow if the cities got rid of what causes people to move out away from the city to outskirts of town. Renovated 100 and 140 year old houses bring charm and are close to the downtown areas kansas city has started to improve on that St louis is a total loss on it for the most part. What good is it to rejuvenate a downtown area only to tear it all down to put up a baseball park.? Its not going to grow the inner city or downtown areas. Traffic and parking is also a major problem And it takes away historical points of the city to put up a ball park we do not need. Maybe were proud of Kaufman stadium and Arrowhead as shinning tokens of the city when you come in from the east on I-70 You won't get that in Kansas

I like the way you make up your own facts. Wow now it is South Africas fault. I am so glad we left that shitshow. Super 14 was the best format. We had to sacrifice the Currie Cup and New Zealand the NPC to accomdate an expanded super rugby because the Australians had no rugby competition between Tri-Nations and their end of the year international tours. Then there is the issue of TV rights. South Africa has a much bigger rugby audience than New Zealand and Australia. But whatever the income was it had to be shared equally. This while South Africa has a much weaker economy than those two countries. It was finacial suiced from South Africa. Then there was the travel, SA teams had to travel more than twice as much as their New Zealand and Australian counterparts. Funny how nobody seems to consider what a massive disadvantage that is. Its easy just look at world cups and Super Rugby. The All Blacks have only won one world cup outside of New Zealand, South has won three world cups abroad. In Super Rugby only one team have managed to cross the Indian ocean and win a final. The Bulls twice easily beat the Crusaders in semi finals at Loftus. The Bulls also achieved the biggest winning margin in any final in any top rugby league in history when they smashed the Chiefs 61-17 in the 2010 final at Loftus. It's not easy crossing the Indian ocean and performing at your best. What Super Rugby needs is competition and audience. They will never get it without Japan. The Australians will never have more than two competitive teams. It just won't happen. If New Zealand wants a competitive league with a foreign nation South Africa is their only option. New Zealand and SA each get five teams. They play double round home and away. Home semi for top two on the log and final on pre determined neutral venue in England, Dubai, Hong Kong, where ever. Then you have the Japanese Australian, and pasific island competition. Six Japanese, four Australian and two Island teams. Two goups of six home and away games against teams in your group and single game against all sox teams in the other group. Quarter, semi and finals home ground determined by log position.

South Africa was carrying Super Rugby commercially. Massive TV viewership, biggest crowds, big corporate sponsors (prime example was seeing Investec Bank branding all around NZ grounds - they don't even operate in NZ but advertised there for SA viewership). All of the above is now contributing to making the URC a massive commercial success which is going from strength to strength and smashing viewership records every year. Super Rugby lost it's golden goose and now the chickens are coming home to roost.

@@AllGoodThings607 You clearly don't know what is happening in South African rugby. Yes the biggest threat to South Africa is the politicians in the country. Now that the ANC lost their majority we will see if they will do what is best for the country or best for them to survive. Schoolboy rugby is growing, especially in diversity. The last two years is the first time in SA schoolboy rugby history that schools with predominantly non white players in their teams broke into the SA top twenty and even top ten rankings. One of those schools even managed to beat Grey College the number two ranked school in SA at the moment. It is clear that at school level the top schoolboy teams are becoming more diverse and more communities are starting to play rugby. To see ten thousand spectators at schoolboy rugby games are not un usual. The schoolboy sports app which livestream schoolboy rugby games have almost eight hundred thousand subscribers. Varsity Cup rugby which is an university tournament and broadcast on Monday evenings get massive spectator numbers and TV viewership. Yes less people can afford going to stadium and pay for professional rugby games. However the SA URC teams don't have fewer spectators than New Zealand Super Rugby teams. If you however combine the spectators for all rugby, from schoolboy, varsity and URC the numbers will blow New Zealand away. If you add TV audience it will be even a bigger difference. Since the South Africans joined the URC and Investec Champions Cup both competitions have seen record spectators and viewership. Super Rugby is definitely not seeing record viewerships or spectators. New Zealand should pray that the ANC destory South Africa because there is a tsumani of new talent from all communities coming in South Africa. Very soon we won't select teams based on qoutas anymore, every team from u13 Craven week to the Springboks will be selcted on merit. South Africa hasn't selected a Springbok team based on a merit base system since 1950 but that day is coming that we will select teams based on a merit system.

I'd like to see expansion. But for me the smart play is Mexico, Cuba, Dominican Republic and Venezuela. Bring in established clubs from their local leagues. Give them lottery picks and get investment. Wrap those teams in their own division and then they play against the Southern US: Miami, Houston, San Diego, Rangers, Diamondbacks, etc.. I always enjoy the Angels and Dodgers get their ass handed to them. They are in that teams to play too. I'm an A's fan, what can I say? Don't make anyone in my new South division fly to Boston or Minnesota. Just spit balling, but I could see MLB expand that way. Japan and Korea is a fools errand. They have great leagues. Europe?? Maybe some games in the Netherlands only because of the rich Caribbean Dutch history of the love for the game.

As an Aussie, i dont understand the fascination with college football in the States. Why would you choose to watch an inferior skill game over the better? In the NRL, we have the reserve grade league, 2nd tier, it still does better than our 'college' games (jersey flegg). One thought as to why is the indoctrination of patriotism hammered into young Americans through family. It is not seen to any extent throughout the western world, only in communist or muslim countries. This means it will peak as a generational thing than die out when people start actually thinking for themselves. There is absolutely no way i would give my time to a college league over a professional one. It would pique my interest as to see the stars coming through but in no way is it worth following religiously like it is now in the states. NFL all the way for me.

In order to understand college football in the states, you need to spend time on a college campus. You have unmatched access and a connection to the team that you'll never have at the professional level. I'd argue that the university experience in the States is far different than anywhere else in the world. For most of us, it is not simply going to school.

I think the UFL should focus on cities thirsty for a football team like Sacramento, Omaha, San Diego, Oakland, Portland and the list goes on. I think they should stay away from cities that already have NFL teams. And also have them play in 20,000 seat soccer stadiums cause it's working for DC and it worked for Sacramento & Omaha in the past as they all had over 20,000 fans filling up those stadiums. They also need marketable teams bring back the Memphis Maniax cause that's more marketable then Showboats? I would say once the NYCFC MLS team complete their stadium have the XFL's Hitmen return as the NY Hitmen to that stadium cause both the NY Giants and Jets play in New Jersey it would be great to have a football team really play in New York City. My idea would be bring back the Outlaws and have them play in Oakland. Bring back the Thunderbolts and have them play in San Diego to keep that charge in the city of San Diego going. Maybe bring the Sacramento Surge to the UFL or the AAF's Orlando Apollos to the UFL? There are a lot of cities that are thirsty for a football franchise. Most cities are more about their NFL teams. Just my opinion though

For me, I live in Wellington, Hurricane's territory, and I just don't FEEL the 'canes. I support Wellington. The 5 Super Rugby franchises in NZ are just that, Franchises, 5 All Black trial squads run by New Zealand rugby. I'd like it more if we cancelled all of them and went back to our provinces, where there was tribalism. Top 5 provinces in NZ's NPC can qualify for the Super Rugby Pacifica comp. It would balance things out with the Australian sides as well. Also a proper round robin. No 2 matches against other NZ sides for NZ sides and vic versa for Australia. It's just creating more of a thing that dilutes the product. In the past we played Canterbury at home one year, then away the next, it was an occasion getting them once every 2 years, its now ended up, play Crusaders twice, then meet again in a semi or final. Then back to the NPC where we play them again, and then again in a final, and they wonder why the crowds have gone?? Also I feel it's destroying Australian rugby. The Australian sides get a far easier round robin, and have sides in the last 4 almost every year, creating this false sense of 'yeah we're good, we're competitive'. They think they're doing enough. It would help rugby AU immensely to do away with a 'conference' type draw like there has been for the past decade or so.

its better now. No one liked it when it was bloated and now we are seeing some of the best games ever. Its just a shame that most teams cant hold a candle to the nz teams. They come in and get a hiding.

If they had any advertising at all they would have had better attendance. For no advertising the numbers were great. Think about it. Somehow thousands went to games and barely anyone knew the league existed. Any effort at all will improve attendance.

Australian Rugbys administration has had their so far up their arse it’s not even Funny. They don’t even realise that no one has any interest or relatability. A talent relied on a bunch of private schools simply goes against the Aussie ethos. Need to connect with the working class.

In all serious, I can see this ending with NFL making its own U21 league (possibly tapping the UFL to do it) and then just crushing college football.

At the moment, Super rugby needs to just keep the status quo in terms of teams. With the Rebels now going bankrupt i think its actually a good thing for the competition as now those players will be shared amongst the Aussie teams & make them stronger. Also, from an NZ perspective, one less Aussie team is better as Australian teams aren't much of a drawcard here. Sky tv (main broadcaster of rugby in NZ) have revealed that this year's Super has been the most watched competition in over two decades which is massive for the game here as a lot people, mainly people from competing sports were saying that the game was finished. It definitely feels like a lot more people are talking rugby and anticipation for Razors first All Black squad is through the roof. If there were to be another team added to go back to 12 it really needs to be another NZ team. No one here really wants a team from Argentina or SA anymore
