It should come as no surprise that Chevrolet's Corvette has earned another 10Best trophy. After all, it's now made the list 25 times, trailing only the Honda Accord as the all-time leading recipient of our most prestigious award.
Like so many things in today's world, the Corvette's price continues to rise. This mid-engine beast is now in its fifth production year, and the cost of entry has crept up $10,000 since the car's introduction, albeit to a still relatively attainable $69,995-a remarkable value for a car that masterfully blends multiple personalities. Flog it at the track on Saturday, then cruise to church in it on Sunday. Why only drive it when the weather's warm? Mount some winter tires and drive it year-round. It won't care.Sadly, this year's price spike pushed the high-revving Corvette Z06 above our $110,000 price cap (by $4395). We suspect a few grand won't deter potential buyers from that 670-hp 5.5-liter V-8-powered wild child, but rules are rules.
Though the hottest version of America's supercar slid off the chart, Chevrolet has delivered a new hit: the hybrid-powered, all-wheel-drive, $106,595 Corvette E-Ray. Put down the pitchfork and step away from the keyboard-the 655-hp E-Ray's electrified front axle and mid-mounted 6.2-liter V-8 powertrain aren't really about green energy. The E-Ray can operate in electric-only mode for very short periods at very low speeds, and only if the driver has chosen to do so before starting the car. Once the battery depletes or speed exceeds 45 mph, there's no going back to EV mode. It's all glorious V-8 with electric assist. The E-Ray also blasts to 60 mph in 2.5 seconds, making it the quickest Corvette we've tested. Feel better now?Then there's the entry-level Stingray, which still turns heads. Specify the targa or convertible with the Z51 package's performance goodies (summer tires, 5-hp bump, brake and suspension upgrades, and more), and 60 mph is yours in under 3.0 seconds, over 1.0 g of lateral grip is at the ready, and stops from 70 mph require less than 150 feet. For the money, there isn't another production car in the world that achieves these feats.
Performance aside, any Corvette is also an extremely livable place. The interior might be a little tight for some, but it's the best Corvette cabin Chevy has ever done. Opt for the magnetorheological dampers, and the ride quality is simply brilliant, even on Michigan's pock-marked and frost-heaved roads. Time after time, the Corvette’s capability and affordability bring us back for more.
