Had to thumb-down this just because of how bad Jackie's hair is.

This race was the last time the NASCAR Cup Series used Restrictor Plates. After this race, all super speedways had to be run with Tapered Spacers, slowing the cars down even more.

What I remember most about racing of that era was the constant, non-stop freight train of J D Stacy cars rolling through the Ess'es. Oh, and that cocky little shit they nicknamed "Jaws" (Darrell Waltrip).NASCAR remembers Dale, but we measure him up against DW.

...it would have been great to see Jackie Stewart drive that old boat, to see if he could do a better time than Richard Petty.

Holy cow what a race. Drivers pushing the last couple laps on bare wheels, cars rolling over and bursting into flames. One car hit the wall and spun out and they didn’t even wave the caution flag. These old races certainly need to be watched more than a couple times.

Think the AH-64s won the race. A Hellfire, a Hydra, maybe the chain gun…Poll position.

So. Cal. had a lot of tracks back in the 70's and 80's. Now that Auto club is gone, all we have left is Irwindale racetrack. Sad.

I haven't watched a cup race in well over 15 years due to PC and wokeness and the stupid rule changes

One thing that some forget about this race: Gordon the year before in his first Coke 600 won the pole and finished second

The last race that me and my dad last watched together, he passed away just a couple days after this race...

This is why David Pearson is the greatest NASCAR driver of all time. When Dale Earnhardt broke his collarbone at Pocono, David took over the next 4 races while he healed. In those 4 races, David Pearson WON 2 races(this and Bristol)and put the car on the pole for Michigan. The man was a masterclass driver, the Silver Fox and I'm proud to be able to say I saw him race and win at Ontario in 1976 in his most iconic car, the #21 Wood Brother's Puralator Mercury.
