Hot damn, we got ourselves a race! Been to Pocono many times and have seen a lot of these drivers win there! I’ll never forget the day Neil Bonnett died at Daytona, cried my eyes out! 😢I love all of these hero racers from back in the day!

They weren't much heavier than the Gen4/5/6 cars. They look heavy because of the lack of downforce, awful tyres and even worse suspension. In long high-bank turns, the cars literally visibly bob up and down, which no car should do, let alone a race car!

What's the 5th? Daytona, Indianapolis, Pocono, and Ontario. I assume he's tossing the slightly bigger Talladega in the mix, or was there one that I'm missing that's relatively obscure (like Texas World Speedway was for 2 mile ovals)?

@@almostfm Thanks, I was 99% sure it was Talladega but one never knows if there's something obscure out there like a track built for an automaker to do testing that I wasn't aware of (such as GM's Milford Proving Ground that's even longer than Talladega), so I thought I'd ask.

*POINT STANDINGS and WINS before the 1980 POCONO 500 (19 of 31):*
#2 Dale Earnhardt (2737 points with 3 wins, Chevrolet)
#43 Richard Petty (-48 with 2 wins, Chevrolet)
#11 Cale Yarborough (-160 with 2 wins, Chevrolet)
#27 Benny Parsons (-218 with 2 wins, Chevrolet)
#15 Bobby Allison (-233 with 2 wins, Ford)
#88 Darrell Waltrip (-253 with 4 wins, Chevrolet)
    #90 Jody Ridley (-391, Chevrolet)
    #3 Richard Childress (-545, Chevrolet)
Despite his great 1979 season, Joe Millikan (Chevrolet) had to scale down to a partial schedule for 1980. Part-timer Buddy Baker (Chevrolet) won the Daytona 500 and the Alabama 500 while David Pearson won the Rebel 500 after taking over the Chevrolet #1 Donnie Allison used to race..
Drivers listed are the season's current top8, last season's top8 plus whatever race winner that doesn't fit any of those 2 descriptions. Yes, I’m using the unsponsored names of the races. In Pocono’s case, the sole race back then was the Pocono 500.

If there's any chance that you have the 1981 Pocono race, I'd really appreciate if you could post it. I was in the pits for that event, and I'd like to see exactly why they pulled the win from Yarborough & gave it to Waltrip. It seemed like a sponsor thing, since Waltrip was with Mountain Dew at the time, and they were a major sponsor of that race.

This wasn’t the last time a fan was on/ near the track. Back when Kyle Petty won Pocono, a fan was walking on the track! The infield at Pocono was the biggest party going! Sometimes the fans did incredibly stupid stuff there.

@@plasticrap4577 In 1981 at the World 600 in Charlotte, there was a drunk trying to climb up the steps from one of the low rows of seats. After several attempts and not making it, decided to pee through the fence while the race was at its halfway point. There was outrage by the fans and they threw full unopened canned drinks and even fried chicken at him. Security came to get him and he could not walk with them so they dragged him out with his toes of his shoes getting the toes ground off. I thought my Dad was going to pee on himself laughing so hard. Charlotte was famous for the drunkards doing these types of things.

Coverage back then was often tape delayed and edited as part of a sports anthology series. You’d see 25 laps, then there would be a boxing match, then 10 more laps, then lumberjack competitions, then the finish of the race.

First full NASCAR race broadcasted on TV = 1972 Greenville 200
Second full NASCAR race broadcasted on TV = 1979 Daytona 500
It wasn't until 1985 that the full Cup series schedule got broadcasted live on TV. Specially between 1972 and 1979 but also up to 1985, ABC and CBS tried to do late-race broadcasts (they'd show just the final 45-90 minutes of a race) and, at some point, even recorded full races like the World 600 for no exact reason. Here on CZcams you can find a couple of full 1970s World 600 races that have been synchronized with the MRN radio call of the race, which was NOT the original intention at all but allows us to enjoy races we were never meant to watch start to finish!

@@wilcoxstrengthinc Mr. Posey stated that he got punched by Mr. Earnhardt during an ABC sport Atlanta race in the mid 80s, pretty sure Mr. Sheppard won that race. Others have also requested reference, give me 1-2 days to rewatch those Atlanta races and zero things in for you. And thanks for giving me an excuse to rewatch em, i can watch Mr. Sheppard and that #47 team out front over and over😉. As an aside Jackie Stewart continued to call races for ABC until 1986 when ABC merged with espn and “Capital Cities, saying that they had “lost their souls” after the cutbacks that ensued. He pretty much stuck to calling Indy races after this race.

bonnet clearly had the best car on turn 3, Baker appeared to have slightly more horsepower on the straights and Cale was even with both. GREAT piece of driving by Bonnett to use the ENTIRE STRAIGHTAWAY which worked partly as a block, partly to break potential slingshot maneuver. I dont believe that Mr Stewart called to many more nascar races after this. LOVE how Mr. Economacki defended Mr. Bonnett here.
