Welcome to Ginge Adventures! This channel has a dual purpose in that, first, I wanted to document my journey going from someone with little to no experience in a vast majority of outdoor activities, to someone that will experience everything this amazingly beautiful world can offer. And second, I hope that MY learning experiences can influence and motivate others, like myself, that didn't grow up "outdoorsy" to get out there and experience it. A lot of what you'll see on Ginge Adventures will be my nerdy, geeky, gamer self doing something or going somewhere I've only been once or twice, or not at all and learning as I go. So if you've ever wished you could get outdoors and go on adventures but were too afraid because you felt you lacked certain skills, knowledge, or experience, I hope I can convince you to try anyway. I am! If I can break free of my self built comfort zone prison, so can you!
Hiking Fortune's Cove Nature Preserve | Yellow Trail | Lovingston | Virginia
Welcome back adventurers! Today we visited Fortune's Cove Nature Preserve. Two loop trails are available, yellow and white. The yellow is longer and steeper and that's the one we decided to do. Lots of views, a few small falls, foot bridges, many different vegetation changes made this one quite interesting! This hike came in at 6.29 miles and 1,654 feet of elevation gain, taking us 3 hours 42 minutes to complete.

The falls are nearest to Vesuvius. The road leading into that area will lead you over to Sherando Lake area if you take the left and do not go to the St. Maries falls.

Blue Ridge is the 2nd oldest mountain range still in existence, someone else's quote: "At over 1 billion years of age, the Blue Ridge Mountains are among the oldest in the world, second only to South Africa’s Barberton greenstone belt." You saw some VERY old rock. Crozet tunnel was named after the French engineer who oversaw it's construction and was able to connect digging from each side with an accuracy of about an inch. It was used to move troops during the Civil War by Stonewall Jackson...
The video doesn't do it justice as lighting in there is a challenge in and of itself, but it was amazing! We were the only 2 in the tunnel that morning and a few times we'd turn our lights off and stand there in the pitch black, just listening to the sounds of the tunnel.
@@The_Ginge Interesting, Thank You!. There are plans to connect Waynesboro bike network with Albermarle/Charlottesville bike network via this tunnel and Ivy Rd...I've yet to take this hike even though I drive by regularly and am curious how a bike lane would work there. It does strike me as what I call a 'rainy day destination' that it might be a good target on a day of heavy rain and/or high heat.
@skipperson4077 It would be perfect on a hot day. As you round the corner to the tunnel entrance, you can feel the drop in temp from the much cooler air exiting the tunnel.

Agreed - this is a great trail, plenty of parking at the end of Rt 614. You may want to turn back down when you get to the top - the fire road walk down is long and not that great except for Bolen Cemetery (2.4 miles from the start of the fire road). A lot of water crossings and stepping up rocks. Takes about 3 hours to do the loop (5.7 total miles) if you go back down the fire road. Take a left past the cemetery to get back to the parking lot (1 mile)
That cemetery is well tended! I want to make a return trip to show it some time. This is one of my favorite trails so far.
Come to the REAL Cold Mountain in Waynesville. I'll show ya up. Plenty good ones in the area. I know where the crowds aren't.
