We build our own sailboat synthetic / dyneema standing rigging
The F25C rehab gets new Colligo terminals spliced with Amsteel SK-75 dyneema and spectra chafe covers as her new standing rig. Investing in a set of Selma fids turned out to be a big time & fuss saver. We did not go the route of buying heat-set Dynex Dux; instead we built each cable expecting to see Amsteel's few-percent creep factor, and sure enough when we pulled VERY HARD overnight on each completed cable, they extended about 8" over about 28'. It was a very interesting project and to me, well worth the effort and major price savings compared to paying the pros :)

applying KiwiGrip non-skid and installing trampoline wing nets on the Farrier F25C trimaran rehab

It was a very busy winter but we've managed to get some work done on this boat. Turns out she needed a little more paint before we prepared the decks for a roll-on nonskid additive from New Zealand (Kiwi Grip). Then we installed 'new old stock' wing nets using individual lashings to create a much stronger and safer connection than the common zig-zag single line method. The separate lashings mak...

And we climbed the volcano on Isla Coronados. Even managed to pull together a five boat multi-hull anchor out at Puerto Ballandra on Isla Carmen - great food on the beach with solid folks :)

We catch a nice light-airs break from February's winter weather, departing Puerto Penasco in northern Sonora, Mexico, bound for Guaymas about 300 miles south. There's just enough wind to fill the asymmetric spinnaker and drive the boat along a bit faster than true wind speed. Soooo much better than freezing back home :O

We're big fans of Alexseal's "No Tip" additive which does the bubble-popping job for you. This is a big deal for the solo painter, as no one has to come right behind your roller to do the 'tipping' by brush. We used 4" high density foam rollers to paint this whole boat, taking three full coats of finish paint (primer job was done in the prior video), with 320 grit sanding in between the coats.

A month in to the F25C trimaran renovation, we take all the good advice from other owners and sort out how to raise a rotating mast on the Farrier trailer tri. Where do the final chain plate positions for the cap shrouds come from?

    • @Ravenswingsailing
      @Ravenswingsailing Před měsícem

      You should put them back in their original position, unless you want to change the geometry for folding. I moved mine inboard so that hopefully the capshrouds can stay the same length when hulls are folded and open. I can let you know in about a week if I succeeded. I was advised by another F25C owner who had done this a long time ago. Also, because you have an aluminum mast, are you sure you actually have an F25C? Do you know where your boat was built, and when? Where are the building plans? Maybe it’s an F25A.

    I have a very scruffy version of this boat in a warehouse near Valencia, Spain, and aim to fix it up as best I can to get some sailing in before I retire from the planet. It has the original aluminium mast, which is pretty hefty, and scary to raise single- handed. Any ideas as to who makes suitable 11m carbon fiber mast sections in Europe?

    • @Ravenswingsailing
      @Ravenswingsailing Před měsícem

      Hi Giles. These boats were spec’s for carbon masts. There were two options, one from Omohundro and one from Marstrom. Omo is gone now. Marstrom is in one of the Scandinavian countries, and very expensive. It would likely cost more than the scruffy boat is worth. I would weigh the mast you have; perhaps with modification it is workable. Ctek in New Zealand is today’s go-to for new carbon masts. They come with a splice, so shipping is reasonable.

    Ok here is the first question x 3, The F-24 I now own has already been rigged with Dyneema. How long should Dyneema keep its working strength? • @Ravenswingsailing
      @Ravenswingsailing Před 2 měsíci

      Hi Brad. Durability of your rigging is very dependent on the actual rope/cordage they used, did they do a quality splicing job, and how much UV sunshine has it seen? Ten years is the current rule of thumb. Running rigging controls should have come out of Corsair quite standardized, but people modify stuff over the years. Your best bet is to visit a boat that is currently racing. If none around, post pictures on the Fboat forum and we can talk you through it. If you're really jammed up and want some 1x1 time, I could do a FaceTime call while you're on the unfolded boat. What's your specific screecher question? Mast rotation should be a set of two little blocks on a bar coming off the mast, and the lines run back to cockpit. Anything like that evident?

    • @SailingTipsCa
      @SailingTipsCa Před 2 měsíci

      The mast rotator in the F-24 is often rigged with the rotation arm at the base of the mast connected to the boom with a block and tackle. It’s really more of a rotation limiter in that the mast wants to rotate itself and this keeps it from going too far! Do you have a continuous line furler for your screacher?

      Thank you, and yes I’m enjoying seeing the finish in our backyard, vs the complete mess when I picked the boat up originally. Yes the knots around the lashings hold themselves tightly. I haven’t trimmed the excess yet as I still need to fold the boat once to check all the net fitting. So the lashings are still long. I will tie little overhand knots then cut with hot knife to finish. That will avoid fraying. I still owe you guys a video of making the bow nets from dyneema fishing net stock.

    Can you tack the spinnaker to the windward ama to get it out from behind the main? Or is that too much pressure on the ama hull? As light as it was, it would seem possible. Nice champagne sailing, and that boat is FAST! I am jealous!

      You should come down and partake, amigo. I’m confident these hulls would be just fine tacking down the kite. But that would be a pretty extreme angle that I’ve never seen done. And the tack line routing would be ugly. But I am going to splice more line onto the whiskers and remake the float hull terminals into static turning blocks so the whiskers come back far enough to be adjustable. Then we can articulate the sprit end to windward. I built the inboard end as a beefy double swivel so no problem for it to swing out to the side some. And of course first I have to move the forward solar panels, which is already on the list because I don’t like how they block access to those bows. I keep long lists, can you tell ;)?

    That boat looks huge out of the water and so much bigger than my own! Thanks for the update. Have you done a full soup to nuts boat tour? I am not sure I've ever seen one. Great job on the projects. Can't wait to see your sailing adventures this season.

      Whoa, you read my mind. Last day of recent cruise the guys went off on a hike and I thought, hey, I’ve never done a boat tour video. So I grabbed a bunch of footage. It’ll get edited soon…

    40’ Ravenswing currently costs $330/mo to stay there. Haulout and launch is about $500. Crane work to remove and reinstall your mast is also about $500. They have very affordable hourly services rates. But they are stretched for skilled workers so it’s good to become fully informed first.

    Well done Greg! Great to see you get all that work done ! Have a great time on the water . 💯 good choice with wind instrument. The Rapido 40 I was lucky enough to sail last Nov did not have calibration and very hard to understand the wind ! Cheers Warren

    Your all metal fix to replace the “cheap ass plastic” throttle bar keeper is brilliant. Showing all the projects to maintain and improve Ravenswing makes for interesting viewing. When working on the hard in Puerto Penasco, are you able to live aboard or do you find shore accommodations? Is that a Malinois at 21:33? Handsome dog. Thank you for taking the time to film while repairing and relaunching. Bon voyage!

      Thx! And I only showed you guys about 25% of what went down that week ;). Great dog breed ID. Yard owner Salvador Cabrales loves that breed. Photo is Drake who has learned to bark loudly at the yard fence along with his litter mate Ripley. In my Nov’22 visit they were 8week old new arrivals, joining the other two adult Malanois. Effective guards and total sweethearts. I’ve spent about four months cumulatively at Cabrales over the boat being there 2.5 years of past five. All nights spent aboard or in our pickup camper parked next to boat. I enjoy it but it’s truly living in the dirt, and many Americans prefer to go rent apartments nearby.

    Nice! Great to see her back in the water. We almost went down the route of tower fitting our anenometer as well (why don’t Raymarine provide spare spades in the box?!?) but ended up with a mast rewire and fitted it at the same time.

    • @Ravenswingsailing
      @Ravenswingsailing Před 4 měsíci

      Same frustration here, literally just a few cents to Raymarine for tiny spades you can’t get in a small Mexican (or any other) seaside town. Argh.

      @@RavenswingsailingMan oh man I hear you, no luck finding them at any Raymarine dealer here in St Maarten either so we ended up botching together our lovely new $700 anenometer install!!! Anyway, great to see her back in the water and looking forward to yours and Ruby’s upcoming Sea of Cortez adventures👍
