A Catamaran & a Half sails a singlehanded bash into a Sea of Cortez norther' blow

  • Sail aboard Farrier F39 trimaran Ravenswing as we take the boat from Puerto Escondido near Loreto, Baja California Sur, up the Sea to Puerto Penasco, Sonora in Mexico. They say you shouldn't sail against a schedule, but our 27' beam means we can only haul the boat out at Cabrales Boatyard on certain high-tide days, so I needed to scoot north to meet our Travelift appointment. Wind in the 20's isn't the problem; it's the steep, close together waves that wreak havoc with the sailor and gear...

@@Ravenswingsailing We were delivering a 42' monohull from San Diego to La Paz. Like you we were on a timeline, and unfortunately were delayed leaving San Deigo because the boat wasn't quite ready yet. We sailed non-stop from San Diego to Cabo San Lucas in six days, which was pleasant downwind sailing, then looked for a break in the prevailing 30+ knot Northwesterlies blowing down the Sea of Cortez. We picked a day when it was forecast to "only" blow 20-25 but the forecast turned out to be wrong and it blew 30+ on that day too! The boat owners had provisioned a delightful hanging fruit hammock in Cabo but by the time we got to La Paz the entire inside of the boat was coated with guacamole from the pounding! The boat had a center cockpit and the soft dodger was getting slammed so hard with blue water that I was afraid it would collapse, but thankfully it didn't. We also contaminated the forward fresh water tanks because the bow was underwater so often and the seals apparently weren't watertight. We planned for this however and had back-up water cooler jugs just in case.

My wife was overdue with out second kid. I brought home a friend’s Catalina 22, telling her if I fixed it up he said we could use it whenever we want! She went into labor four hours later. I never did sail that boat, but I learned to singlehand on Dad’s Catalina 30 in SF Bay. Frank Butler of Catalina was a sailboat genius!

Nice work upwind in that short chop which I experienced on Lake Michigan sailing my Sprint 750 trimaran. It is brutal on the boat and the sailors.
Did you encanter fishing boats and nets anywhere else on the See of Cortez or only around Puerto Penasco?
Will you be in Puerto Penasco sometime late January or in February? My wife and I are planning a trip there and perhaps we can meet up there.

I hear you - my first day sailing in Chicago was very humbling. Looked like Michigan Ocean to me! I’ve only seen the big fishing boats in the far north of the Sea. But plenty of panga fishing near shore most anywhere. For timing I’m just waiting for the Penasco weather to get back to 70F days so I can paint. Targeting mid Feb.
Do i remember right that Sprint is the cabin boat and Dash the daysailor? I’m curious to see one and compare to my good C24 experiences . You can hit me direct via Cartersboat at gmail

Thanks for making trimaran videos. There are not enough people filming themselves cruising on them. I really appreciate how long you have been documenting your travels. It was really cool seeing how well your boat handles upwind. Nice reef on the jib, you don't see that too often. How do you find your little outboard handling the boat when it blows? It it big enough?

Hey Cullen, great to meet you! You can see my long red Vee mainsheet; it's modeled directly from your boat. Mike taught me many great tips along the way to help me build this boat into an R version. The jib is great, even if most cruisers think I'm an idiot for no roller furling. But I'll take my full batten, great shape, no jamming sail any time. The O/B is a commitment to sailing. Anything above about 6 knots boat speed and we have to put the motor away, as the prop will ventilate in waves. That should be the reason to install a proper deep prop diesel, but I don't want the electrolysis, sailing drag, hot block in the living space, 250+ more pounds aboard. And the Suzuki was only 10% the cost of a full volvo installation. But yes, the 20hp is strong enough once I got the right shallow-pitch prop, and it's a huge help to now have the motor connected to steering. Directional thrust has helped docking quite a bit. Wouldn't get that with the diesel.
We had a little party over here last night with my 20-something kids when the subs hit 500. Cool little milestone.

      Hey Greg,
It’s always cool to learn how Mike and Delta Vee have helped to shape our niche of the sailing world. I hear you about the O/B and the commitment to sailing. Sailing small boats like our Nacra 5.8 taught me to always sail to anywhere I needed to go. I think eventually I will get experienced enough on the F-31 to feel the same way. We have a little 10hp Tohatsu on ours and I’m always worried we won’t make it up the channel because of the strong trade winds. Lin and Larry Pardey are my inspiration to not using the engine as much. If you’ve figured out how to sailed Ravenswing without an inboard diesel this long you probably don’t need one. I just connected my O/B to the tiller and am excited to see the difference.
      Aloha
