Install Final Drive Protection for BMW R1250GS - Tech Talk
The ParaLever final drive on the R1250GS is a wonder of engineering design. I shudder at the cost of repairing that and worse, damaging it along some remote backcountry trail. Casting my eyes around for a way to protect this part of my machine, I came across Wunderlich's LeverGuard. This deceivingly simple device simply attaches to the bottom of the final drive housing. And boom! Protection for the final drive from the road. Follow along and as 2 Awesome Dad's install this little wonder to the GS.

    Appreciate your content to help others (like myself). Question: did you run into any issues with the Right-hand side lower crash bar not lining up with the mounting points on my 1250 GS. I installed the Altrider skid plate and then went to do the Altrider lower crash bars. The left side lines up without issue at all mounting points and no force was given following their instructions on which to bolt up first etc. the Right hand side would not. If I follow the instructions and connect the top brace to the long frame bolt…then the top front to the frame and then go to the bottom front (threaded case mounting point)…the lower tube is off considerably. Everything is loose too (so nothing tight by any means). If I undo the top front bolt I can do the bottom front, but then can’t do the top front. If I take out the long through bolt so nothing is attached…I can do both the top front and the bottom front, but then the top tube won’t line up where the long through bolt goes (nor the holes in the bracket line up with the bottom tubes). I even sent pics and this info to Altrider requesting a replacement RH side lower (since the left aligned perfectly). Altrider was great and immediately got it out. I just went to install. Same exact thing with the now 2nd RH side lower. I’m now wondering if it was a bad run of a batch. I’m not finding anything online about any issues installing them. My friend has the system on his 1200 and said it went on without issue. My concern is even if I could muscle them enough to flex (which as you know would be hard due to how robust they are)…there would be such force on the bolts that an impact could potentially sheer the bolts and that especially makes me nervous about that front lower which is threaded into the engine case. Anyway sorry for the long winded detail. Just curious if you ended up challenges, sweating, swearing like me on the install. Thank you for your time.

      @ROTTSOLID It's been a while, but Jody recalls we did have issues. We had to really loosen all the bolts and slowly tighten them individually. It was as though the bars were not completely in sync with the bike.

    • @ROTTSOLID
      @ROTTSOLID Před 5 dny

      @@2awesomedadsadventures988 thanks for the reply. No amount of loosening can fix how far off the right hand side is. Left side perfect. And for two right hand side bars to have the same issue there must be something off in the production of them when they were made. Skid plate was simple and is on, but no crash bars now so I have to rethink it all. At least I have the MAM valve covers.

I admit the mount itself is pretty okay, but the method of securing the bottles (those dippy straps) is down right CRIMINAL! As for the bottles, they'd be about the right size for carrying extra FUEL (although I'd always worry about being rear-ended). Speaking of carrying liquids, seems Roto-Pack might have been better option (assuming one has come to terms with drilling holes in their cases). All in all, yet another example of Canadians being far too accommodating/polite. Your neighbors to the south would have a few choice words for those TourTech boys!

    If you look at tourtech brief video on it he is Turing it to the right ! You are correctly turning it to the left which makes sense since the hole size on the bracket decreases in diameter.. something is not right here, this should be the easiest part of this installation only taking 2 seconds and few other GSA owners are puzzled Just as I am.. we can’t line up or lock the bracket on the adaptor. The only difference is your have 3 holders on each side and I have the two ( smaller size).. any advice would be appreciate it

    I found using the original bolt was too difficult and not long enough. My printed instructions said to use only the washer so I used new, longer bolts that came with the lense. I think they changed their mind or had too many complaints so started to furnish all new bolts. I have the the GSA maybe that's a difference with the headlamp assembly but the lense and bracket is just fine.

Im trying to determine if this is by design & that why they specify the loctite or not. I.e. its suppose to just hold the switch in place allowing it to rotate thus be quite loose with the loctite preventing it from backing out. Now youve had yours installed for a while is yours now finger tight or sill very firmly 'nipped up'? I believe 35nm is for another bolt as that's way too high & i dont think the kick stand would be able to rotate if the bolt was that tight. I initially tried 10nm & even that feels too much/ made the side stand stiff to operate. Thanks
