Is that a diesel/electric engine at the back of the train and why? is it a backup or is is engaged?
@@walther6799 BR Class 47 diesel. Back up in case of failure, marshalling carriages at origin and destination, and occasionally assists the steam engine.

The newspapers the day after the inaugural InterCity 125 run had photos on the front pages of the train leaving London Paddington Station with huge columns of white smoke coming from the locomotives, which I believe had been idling for a considerable length of time before the train moved off. In the early 2000s the InterCity 125 locomotives were fitted with new engines that do not make any visible smoke at all.
The Valentas always did that, whether they had been idling for long or not. They had a single, large turbocharger. Until it was fully spun up, a lot of unburned fuel was ejected by the engine, which contributed to the visible clag.

How involved was it to replace all the belts ? There's alot of wiring in the deck. I may be doing same but would like some advice if possible- Thanks !
I bet they didn't predict that over 40 years later the speed on our rail network is still 125 mph max. It's a global embarrassment.
@Credible Threat The Class 91 locomotives introduced on the ECML in 1988 have a design speed of 140mph/225km/h (the trains they pull/push were originally called InterCity 225s) but they have never been operated in normal service at more than 125mph because the necessary track improvements for higher speed were not made. The only line in the UK where the trains exceed 125mph is the line from the Channel Tunnel to London St. Pancras, which is really a SNCF branch extending into the UK.
125mph is plenty. We are a small island!
@@YK-fj5bj Not if fuel-efficient train travel is going to replace fuel-guzzling air travel on the longer routes it's not. 5 hours from Cornwall to London - one hour from Newquay airport to London - the trains need to level up.
@@alanmusicman3385 The Government seems to have strange policies on this, they are going ahead with HS2 which will have the best chance of success if taxes on Air travel were increased but IIRC Rishi Sunak has reduced the taxes on Private Jets within the UK.
