A once in a lifetime sailing experience happened when we were about 2 nautical miles offshore the Newport Beach Harbor Coast. 4 Blue Whales appeared... and one circled around, and right under our sailboat.

Love this!
Thank you Darcie
So close. Lucky you. I missed it!
It was a great trip with Scott. Sailing in San Francisco Bay is no lack of wind comparing to Newport Beach. Need to cross the ocean one day.
Gorgeous day on the bay! Smooth sailing!
Beautiful sailboat and the crew is synchronized to perfection!!!
That’s one beautiful Sailboat
505 racer here. Port boat you are wrong on 3 levels. Should be disqualified and you owe for damage. The fact you laugh is revealing.
Правый галс это жёлтая яхта. Имеют преимущество.А эти чудаки ппс не знают.
Do you know the rules???
Way cool! I would have enjoyed the sight!

Reckless skipper The yellow boat was right😮
Very informative, I’m sure this helped first timers to feel more comfortable in trying to sail to Catalina and not to be uncertain of what to expect once they get there. I learned a lot!
Looks like everyone had a good time!
Very cool!
Looks like fun!
Great presentation, lots of research and visuals that added dimension to the video!
Good times! Love the drone shots.
I think Blue Whales aren't just the largest creatures on Earth today, as far as we know they're the largest animals to have ever lived on Earth.
Here's to you Blue! Stay safe out there and hope you find lots of food.
No swimming with whales?😢
Thank you for sharing!
Hello Scott! Nice racing! At 3:18 when the camera is on Amadeus (?), it looks like it has the retractable bowsprit. It's still the IMX40, isn't it? If so, could you share more about that modification?
or maybe it's not the retractable one, but the permanently mounted one, as others install those on the IMXes? Hard to tell from the video, but now I'm leaning towards believing it's the permanent one
Yes. Amadeus is an IMX 40 and has a permanent retractable bowsprit.
Лев галс не уступил.
I was waiting and waiting listening to all the talking and loud music. I can't finish tapping out.
Great video! Thanks for sharing!
I'm so jealous 🍻
To slow = no steering... Sorry mate.
Great video of our weekend regatta & win! Thanks Scott❤👍⛵️🏆
Poor vs rich
Since there is a clear overlap entering the zone, what would the best behavior for the POV boat be? I think they should have made it much clearer to the yellow boat that they were entitled to mark room, no? Because it's a little late at the last 10 seconds to go to the other side of the red buoy. Also for the record, it's not the gybe that caused the collision. So overall I feel it's the yellow boat's fault but I'm not 100% sure. Anyway, not a laughing matter, any collision is bad!
Except they were well wide of the mark, and on port tack. I didn't hear them claim an overlap either...
This video gives me deja vu from ASA 103.
What were you thinking? You were on the Port tack! Give way man! And, for the record, it’s not funny.
woman: "Ah, they're on a starboard." dude: "They're going to have to give room." That was mistake 1. There's always a stand-on and a give-way, no "give room" boat, and the starboard vessel sure wasn't overtaking or anything else to cause it to give-way.
Poor men !
It all happened so quickly that you couldn't keep clear?
🙈 stupid.
Jerks.
Starboard has right of way
Not inside the 3 boatlength zone when overlapped as here.
That was the finish line not a rounding buoy. Starboard has right of way all the way.
@@ianfleming7859 sorry mister…you’re completely wrong
@@boatingallaround5933 must be nice to know it all.
IMHO it's your fault! Colregs violated, they were on starboard tack. Was that a race and buoy acted as a mark? Rule 10 was violated as well as rule 18.4 (you should have gybed earlier). How ignorant can one be and laugh about that?
Hope they protested and use the video to disqualify you...go learn regatta rules .
What's the idiots!
Are u saying that that rule 10 only applies if upwind?
The only time rule 10 does not apply is on a downwind finish because the mark, usually the committee boat, is also an obstruction.
@@Airsails We go by RRS 9.1 (a) here, but I've seen SI's that have altered that which takes precedence.
If that was the finish, then rule 18 doesnt apply. Only rule 10 of opposite tacks and possibly 13..the overtaking rule from what i see
This was a downwind finish so rule 10 does not apply.
Oh man! Scott you captured one a lot of people can learn from. Hopefully both boats did some reading of the RRS after this. 😮 Glad no one was hurt.
I was on the boat & I think those of you who were not should talk to the people in the little yellow boat. There's more to the situation than is obvious from the video. 😂
Yeah, there’s a video so… no
What a dumb move. Even if you were right about room at the mark, you accidentally jibed because you weren’t paying attention, hit another boat, then laughed about it. People like you are the problem
