Ford Shogun Build - Episode 6. Front Suspension and Steering.
In this episode, we work on the front suspension and steering for the Shogun. A new plan emerges as we shift gears in an effort to get the Shogun running and driving. There is a lot to consider and accomplish before we can try to fire up the engine, so let's get started on knocking out the bare minimums!

    I always admired the festiva, IMO and experience, i have only seen them working and they have been die hards, even in mexico I still see them around when I visit baja, from poor families craming into them to masons using them as micro hybrid work trucks, my friends and I always point them out. whe think they were built too good so they got discontinued (haven't heard bad stories, so maybe bias) I'm glad to have stumbled upon your project, i'll be following, AWESOME.

    Awesome video son!!! I feel for you on the finding more stuff you need as you build the shogun. Been there done that, and you've helped me back then. Probably why you're into building the Shogun. But you are one up on the old man building almost a one off/copy of something Jay Leno has one of. The difference was I building or resto-moding vehicles that had parts that were on the shelf. Newer year model parts that could fit older vehicles. I really admire the way you are doing this. Researching, getting down tot the technical and engineering aspects, and making it work. I'm a bit intrigued when it comes to the widebody, and fender wells. I know this project has alot of work left and I'm sure it's on the list but I think it would be a good idea to tackle that pretty soon. Last thing I want to see is this work going to waste because of a rainy day

    • @eyegood38
      @eyegood38 Před 3 měsíci

      That's definitely going to be the hardest part for me. I need to get a complete scan of the car before designing. To do that, I need to get the final wheels figured out to know my body widths front and back. But to do that I need to solve the 4 lug vs 5 lug issue first. I have some width numbers off the internet for the original shoguns, but there is a lot that needs to be validated. I don't want to design the body and wind up with clearance issues due to not having the wheels figured out. In a perfect world, I could scan a real shogun and know what they did to solve the 4 lug vs 5 lug issue. Changing hubs or making custom assemblies leads to changes elsewhere, like the brakes... I'm working on it as time permits 😋 thanks for the thoughts! We are definitely thinking alike!

I switched from a open dif to a trac loc and was disappointed at gaining almost nothing in the way of traction. You are definitely right about the powertrain setup! The options with that motor are very limited indeed. I suppose I was leaning towards trying to replicate an original more than anything and while other options were likely better candidates in terms of support and parts, it just wouldn't feel right to deviate that direction. Maybe there can be a Shogun version 2.0 or something... take a newer Fiesta and put in a modern powerplant 🤪I appreciate the comments! Keep em coming! Definitely don't stop working on your projects. On the original Shogun, the subframe offset is 3.125” from the vertical face of the floorpan to the center of the front subframe mount bushing holes. While the original car does infact have a welded subframe(which was done for rigidity of the chassis) they cut and welded the frame in just past the leading edge of the bushing holes.

      Oh... uh... I guess I had better go measure that! Mine must be a bit too far forward then 🤔 Things I wish I knew beforehand, but I'm glad everything is only tacked in place still! That would present some geometry changes and challenges. Effectively, since my bushing holes are centered on the rectangular tube, that's 1.5" off right there, depending on how far back I put that rectangular tube. Dang... I can move that rectangular tube back until the bushing holes are that far back. That would move the whole frame/cage back. I don't want my wheelbase to be that far off from the original if possible. I really appreciate the knowledge! Thank you very much! 😄

    I’m loving this build. I very much appreciate the in-depth description of the how that bender works.

      Thanks a bunch! Tis a good bender. Not perfect, but hey I got the result I needed after my second attempt ever! Now I know how to approach the bends, the nuances of the machine, and everything is working well 👍

    Love this build! You do a good job explaining everything. Pretty good only having to do the rollbar twice assuming your first time. Do you think you over bent or maybe spring back messed you up or just simply learning curve?

    • @eyegood38
      @eyegood38 Před 4 měsíci

      Thanks! It's a combination of a few things. Having the bender on a not-quite-level floor, the fact that those level gauges turn off after not registering a change for some amount of time and then lose their original reference, the spring back, a small learning curve, and not thinking of every potential source of error. After the first one, I concluded that it's much better to not have bent enough than to have bent too much. The bender is great, but not perfect. It's difficult to tell exactly when the force of the bender actually starts flexing the tube, so your original references are paramount. I definitely over bent on their first one, hoping to avoid having to put it back in the bender. But, in the end, I had to bend another tube, so that was flawed logic anyways.

      Haha,It is definitely going to be challenging to complete. Thankfully we have some newer technology to help these days and there are a few folks out there who are generous enough to share their experiences trying to replicate these things. But you are absolutely right. Every step I take makes me realize there's a lot more to think about coming up! Glad you appreciate it as much as I do =) I hope others try to do this and find these videos helpful. Cheers!
