Physical Therapy Workout After Meniscus Surgery
It’s been 9 weeks since I had surgery to repair my torn meniscus. For the first 6 weeks I was bearing zero weight on my right leg, whereas in the last 3 weeks I got cleared to start walking and doing exercises to strengthen back up my leg at PT. I’ve been going to physical therapy twice a week and doing the same routine at the gym on Saturdays where each and every week I am able to do more and increase my strength, balance, and range of motion.
In today's video, I take you through what I’ve been doing at PT plus some extra exercises that I find to be helpful!
If you are getting surgery these are some of the exercises that you can expect to be doing after 6 weeks where once you start, the amount of strength, balance, and range of motion in the knee/leg you got surgery on will start coming back in no time!

thanks for posting this - I have a friend that this just happened to and concerned thanks for walking through your process
I wish I had come across your page sooner. It's been a discouraging 14 weeks. I just started going to the gym last week, and your vibe is EXACTLY what I needed to FINALLY motivate me. Now I feel determined to beat this now, as I'm also an active person. Lets GOOOOOO!!!!
Love and appreciate the positivity. Thanks for documenting and sharing my friend and hope you bounced back fully and more!
I am a fit 61 year old male, and I had a Medial Meniscus Root tear surgery 10 days ago at Hospital for Special Surgery in NYC. My surgeon said I could drop to 1 crutch in week 2 which I have been doing around my apartment with little pain. I know everyone's situation and tears are different. I had my first PT session and the PT person was nervous about me putting pressure and using 1 crutch (When I leave my apartment I use 2 crutches and put little to no pressure. I use a nice ice compression sleeve 6 times per day for 30 minutes a clip. My PT person said I had only 1 centimeter of swelling and I could bend at 80 degrees no problem. I am hoping I am not pushing it, I see the Physicians Asisstant in a few days.
This is not a recap
sorry bout that
You were supposed to give a recap not a review!
Sorry
When did you start to go back to work after surgery?
Thanks for your videos. My tear is very similar to yours and I'm 51 and am waiting for my surgery date. I was wondering if you used any kind of foam elevation or surgery recovery pillows. The surgeon said repair so I am happy and hoping he can still do the repair once he gets it there and sees exactly what is up.
I hope it heals well.
Hi, I had ACL, medial meniscus tear and lateral meniscus posterior root tear repair surgery 3 weeks ago. Same as you, I am prohibited to weight bearing with my left leg. I want to ask, can you bend your knee after the surgery? Because I'm feeling stiff on my left knee so I can only bend like 20 degrees maybe since my surgery 3 weeks ago.
I had bear acl and medial meniscus repair 1 month ago now. I also had tears in lateral meniscus, in lcl and sprain of mcl that were not operated on. My knee flexion right now tops around 56 degrees. It's painful and I constantly have to push through scar tissue when bending. I hope your doing physical therapy already, that's really important, and doing them on off days like he mentioned in the video.
u should be about 6 weeks now, how's your knee flexion?
@@thebestthingthatneverhappe6729 hey, im about 8 weeks after surgery now. I still don't have my hyper-extension leg (still 4 degrees) and only can bend up to 60-70 degrees perhaps) my gastrocnemeus sprain also coz so much pain when I'm trying to bending ...
Hi! Do you remember if your knee would hurt without reason during the 6 first weeks? Or maybe after doing leg exercises? Thanks in advance
Dude you look like you have 0 pain this close from surgery. Did you take any pain meds? How is your knee now?
How long it take to walk normally after surgery
Thanks, feeling less stress...
On my second week of lateral bucket handle meniscus repair. I enjoyed your series. How’s everything going now?! Been a year since you’ve posted!
I’m 6 weeks 3 days post op surgery. I was NWB for 6 weeks I’m allowed to put weight (25%) and I’m scared to walk!! Like wth these last 6 weeks I was like I can’t wait to walk!! We are here and I’m scared 🤦♀️
I was allowed to put 25 percent weight in 6th week, 50 percent in 7th week. Now in 8th week , using stick for support yet full weight bearing. Can walk 4/5 steps without support. Physio told me Incan walk full weight bearing without support now but surgeon has to approve yet
Bucket handle tear of the medial meniscus. Apparently a rare tear but very treatable with a great recovery. Had a partial menisctomy 2 days ago, and my knee already feels so much better. I'm so happy. I really missed sleeping through the night. That constant knee pain I wouldn't wish on anyone.
that must be nice, i had surgery yesterday for my bucket handle tear and they repaired it, i had no pain before but now I literally cant sleep the pain is so bad
@@connorvannatta9omg! I am getting surgery for my bucket handle tear soon. Was it because you didn’t have a good surgeon?
It is not recommended to get partial meniscectomy. How long did you injured your knee before surgery and was it really that bad? I will have my bucket handle tear surgery soon.
@@connorvannatta9how are you doing now?
What do u use to make the large block of ice. I have used 2l yogurt containers but they seem to crack over time , so looking for a replacement
I'm 31 and getting surgery in 2 weeks... i have a "buckle handle" meniscus tear. I was really scared but your vlog gave me so much hope. I'm an active girl, i do lots of workout and kickboxing so... i know it wont be easy not being able to move for a month but...i feel hopeful thanks to your story. Thanks for sharing <3....thankssssss i might do a vlog as well...@ambarmoya
Waiting for the mri results and I’m sure I tore mine, can’t walk sometimes, so I’m sure I’ll need surgery. The only thing freaking me out is the fact that I won’t be able to keep working. I’m a Firefighter so I kinda need my legs
I am so glad I found your video! I am one week post op of a meniscus root repair and was getting a bit despondent over the non weight bearing for six weeks😢. You are so upbeat and share a lot of good post op recovery information most videos are about recovery from arthroscopy only (cake walk) not the meniscus root repair which is a whole other mood. Like you I had little pain and was doing ADL’s with little issue but I’m not a young athlete..then a year later landed on the examination table of a surgeon specializing in sports medicine who pressed the right spot and I realized what damage had been done, the surgery should have been done earlier but public health in Canada is having issues anyway got scheduled two months after I saw him. Right now I am icing the knee and doing the mild exercises recommended by my surgeon whom I see next week for follow up and for the PT prescription. I took the Celebrex + Xtra strength Tylenol as prescribed for the first five days and didn’t bother with the Tramadol (I took one in the recovery room) I’ll still take the Celebrex + Tylenol on an as needed basis only for a couple more weeks. It looks like you are wearing TED stockings (white stockings) were they recommended by your doctor? I am asking because I’m an old broad (68) and they just told me to do the foot pumps and ankle circles in sets of 20 x 10/day for blood clots. More incentive to do the other leg exercises a few times/ day. For any one reading this and looking at having the meniscus root repair get yourself prepared pre op for post op. Start working on the upper body strength..Stock up on food pre cook chicken breast or salmon or casseroles pre boil a dozen eggs, stock up on fresh or frozen veggies, you aren’t moving a whole lot so not the time for a high fat junk food diet and you need the fibre if you take pain meds with codeine. Metamucil is great too. Make sure you’re getting enough protein, clean your bathroom thoroughly ( post op infection is no fun), line up someone who can assist you for the first few days(or move in with Mom for six weeks) buy your crutches and adjust them to your height and practice using them, consider how you’ll approach stairs if you have them and borrow or purchase a shower bench ( Amazon) even a walker can be very helpful. Get your place set up so you can recuperate well. I’m lucky because I have an old retired guy assisting me but Dude cannot cook so prep, prep, prep. Also I spent thirty seven years watching the fallout of poor post operative recovery…prepare yourself! Non weight bearing sucks BUT this surgery means I’ll avoid a total knee replacement in future. I’ve never had knee issues and don’t even have arthritis just a bad luck moment stepping over a big old dog. Thank you Alex I hope that by now you are 💯 back to playing sports and doing everything that gives you joy!
Keep making videos. I’m having meniscus issues too and also cutting with hopes of having visible abs for the first time. I see the doctor in three weeks. So worried about how surgery will impact my cut. Your videos have given me some hope.
Can you touch your toe with the ground while walking after 3 weeks of your surgery
What kind of meniscus tear did you have?
Hello, how long did the swelling last?
I just scheduled my meniscus surgery for March 8 after dealing with this injury and pain for 4 months. I am SO ready to get it over with, BUT I am nervous. Your videos are helping. Thanks for sharing your experiences!
Hows your knee feeling nowadays, any pain?
How are you feeling now almost a year post op? Can you do everything like you used to? Does your knee feel good or even better than pre surgery? Any complications or bumps along the road? I’m now 6 weeks post from a meniscus repair
Im almost back to full capacity. I have a coupe more degrees to go to get to full knee flexion (think heal pulled all the way back to but) I had a weird infection that wasn't due to the surgery back in June that set me back a little, but other than that strength and balance is about the same as my other leg. 6 weeks post op, keep up the hard work where you will do great!
😂😂 afirmó los músculos con los frío 😅
Thank you! I am now week 8 and free of the crutches and the knee brace and your videos have been a real motivator during the dark depressing days 😅! Thanks again.
Absolutely so glad to hear this 🙌🏻
I had my surgery for the posterior root tear 5 weeks back and am non weight bearing on operated leg for 6 weeks, one difference i notice is you do not seem to be using a hinged knee brace which is mandatory for me and it is a pain but protects my knee from injury, so did you use the brace and did your knee ever bend more than 90 degrees or twist during the first 6 weeks accidently ?
From my understanding doctors have different protocols where mine did not give nor recommend a brace so I never used one. But I was instructed to not bend the knee and did not accidentally bend it and right now my knee is amazing!
I had Menisectomy before 1 month. How many days after I can walking?
Not exactly sure since I didn’t have that surgery but I’m sure your doctor would know!
Well done man. How’s things going now?
They are going great now! I will have to make an update video shortly!
I'm on week 2 right now it is it hard to stay motivated sometimes. I appreciate your videos and positivity!
You got this Paige! I see now it’s been about a month so you should be waking by about now so I hope all is going good and that you have been staying strong!
Hey Cross it’s me luke I had so much fun at your training and I’m coming back to your other classes!
Hey Luke what’s up! I’m so glad to hear that you had so much fun at my training camp where unfortunately I’m not at the y anymore and was not able to continue my training there. I am however right down the road and if you’re interested in the new place I’m at have your mom give me a text or call!
Is that a balcony?.. how do u empty it? I live in an apartment
Yeah on the ground floor, I got lucky. Your best option could be to purchase the same type of plunge and put it in your shower tub and fill and empty it from there
Do you do them consistently everyday? Or just every leg day?
Every leg day!
Awesome. I think that Red Bull advertises for extremist sports and has its time and place and Monster is becoming popular. Recently though I did an experiment kind of with the two newest energy drinks, Reign and C4 hiking. I agree that pre-workout can increase stamina and statistics at the gym and I used David Laid’s Euphoria and think it had like only 150 mg or 200 mg caffeine and is Sucralose free so recently I got C4 pre-workout in the powdered form and it must be similar formula to the C4 energy drink because they also have the canned version at your local gym. Anyway I started hiking longer distances like 8 or 10 miles a day and found that when I felt drained of energy in the middle of no where following the path around the big ponds here in the Hamptons along with listening my favorite workout music on uTube like Metallica and Florida Georgia Line the energy drinks usually a Reign or a C4 are pretty important because they make me feel faster and stronger and more efficient and the world champion Irish arm wrestler Devon Larratt as well as Icelander World’s Strongest Man champion Hafthor Bjornsson are sponsored by Reign. I found that energy drinks have their time and place because you need to be alert and feel good. I think I had my best hike on Reign however that C4 also increased my speed and attention. Out of the four Red Bull, Monster, Reign, and C4 I think that C4 is the only one that you can get in the powdered form with a similar formula and you can get it at Walmart, GNC, and I recently got some On Amazon for like $20 for 30 servings so that saves me over $2 a day as C4 energy drink is $3 out here. It works about as good on the hikes. Also C4 has to be about the cheapest quality preworkout you can get for body building. However I have to agree that my extra consumption of caffeine is keeping me up probably for an extra two hours until midnight. I have like two XL matcha green tea cups and the energy drink or preworkout during the day. I stop having caffeine around like 2 pm and should probably do 12 pm. I think it’s around less than 500 or 400 mg of caffeine per like you said. Although the C4 energy drink is carbonated and has more caffeine and I see you can order 12 Packs on Amazon and if you watch them enough C4 and Reign will drop to $20 for the case cutting the price Almost in half then on the shelf. Reading the C4 Sport preworkout it says it has 135 mg of caffeine while the C4 energy drink has 200 mg of caffeine. However you can get all sorts of interesting different brews in the powdered form. The C4 I have has 2,500 daily percentage of B12 which is important and increases metabolism of every cell. Euphoria I think had DL Phenylalanine which increases blood flow efficiency. Reign has 300 mg caffeine and jacks up the B vitamins while BCAAs will speed up recovery. I had a friend a few years ago and he would have like two to four Monsters a day sometimes so I guess that some people get like high on energy drinks. It’s fascinating what sports Red Bull sponsors so it must be good like stunt hang guiding jet propelled around a long cloud formation years ago or more recently sponsoring the most innovative Hawaiian surfer Kai Lenny who does airs and gets towed into some waves them being so big. And Monster sponsors stuff like monster trucks I think and auto cross and some sports. I’m no too familiar with Red Bull however used to have a Monster some times for day to day normal motivation. Thanks for not slamming energy drinks reminding me to be thoughtful about how I have them.
Thank you so much for leaving this comment! I appreciate the thorough response where it comes down to moderation at the end of the day!
Just had mine done last Tuesday. No repair work done though. I had a buckle handle tear which prevented my leg reaching terminal extent the entire 3 month build up to surgery. How long did it take for you to reach full full, back to normal extension with VMOs flexed after your surgery? Thanks in advance and for your vids. D (SF.CA)
I could get fully extension pretty quickly, it’s more so the contraction that’s the toughest, I still got about 5-10 degrees to go to get my calf touching my hamstring
They don't get easier for me, even if you haven't missed a day 😂🥶
Hey nothing wrong with that😂
8 weeks post op here. Complex repair. 6 weeks sucked. Take care of your knee!!
Awesome! I hope your recovery has went well where my knee has been feeling amazing!
Thanks for posting. Balanced video.
Awesome glad you enjoyed it!
How are you feeling now? Can you run yet?
Yes I can run now and have no pain or issues. I’m at 9 months post opt. I started running at 5 months and had no issues
Thank you for your videos. I’m 4 weeks post medial meniscus repair. Just starting to bear weight but so excited to lose the crutches. Thanks for sharing your story.
Absolutely, my bad for the late response but I’m sure you’re in about full recovery now, keep it going strong!
Thank you for sharing 😊 This is the positive attitude and boost I need right now. I’m a little over a week post-op and trying to figure out some workouts and daily life work arounds😉
Absolutely thank you for leaving this comment where I hope your recovery has been going smoothly well!
My meniscus tear surgery in couple of days. Your video is indeed a confident booster. Thank you 🙏 💐
So sorry for responding so late I’m so glad you found it helpful! Hopefully your recovery has gone well!
How’s it going
Gosh your a fit monster 😊 from the other side the pond
Thank you!

Best way to do Cold plunge at home when space is very limited?
Buy a cheap one like mine on Amazon and place it in your bathtub, fill it up w/cold water and then put some ice in it by either going to gas station 80 pounds of ice 20-30 bucks, fill up empty water bottles/Greek yogurt container and store in a chest freezer, investment 150-300 dollars

Thanks for this video. It's very inspiring. Videos like this help to keep me doing the ice baths. Doesn't it feel good to feel superhuman?
